It took Luke Skywalker two films to put Vader in his place.
Kylie Minogue did it in just over 30 seconds.

Another good reason to use clips from the dub instead of the sub is that a lot of us who "watch" TH-cam are actually just listening to these videos as we do other stuff, like chores around the house or maybe we're driving or at work while we're listening.

@@lemos360 the fact that people are willing to listen to him when they can't watch shows that he's good at what he does. And he's already said that he uses dubs for the benefit of the broader audience, and the reason I gave does not hurt the experience for those watching verses those listening.

When I heard VIZ was redubbing Sailor Moon with an accurate translation, no censorship, and the 5th season dubbed in English for the first time, I was ecstatic for it. But all the actors sound the same, their delivery and energy doesn't come close to the original, they sound kind of like amatures. And apparently a lot of dubs have those same issues. *That's* why I prefer subbed, because most dubs' voice acting can't sell me on the crazy visuals I'm seeing

    • @jadedheartsz
      @jadedheartsz 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Agreed, Nephrite's death scene was fucking ruined due to the poor line delivery of Naru's VA, I don't blame the VAs though cause I know how talented people like Veronica Taylor are, they just got very bad voice direction, I feel like Viz were so afraid of being like the DiC dub that they massively overcorrected and went too far in the opposite direction. I had the same problems with the uncut straight to video dub of Saint Seiya, sure it wasn't censored like Knights of the Zodiac but the voice-acting was so flat and dull they I couldn't get into it, at least DiC's VAs were clearly enjoying themselves and giving it their all.

The "dub vs sub" debate has been going on forever. However, a dubbed version can make anime more accessible to general audiences. Maybe then those audiences will look into other anime.
It all comes down to personal choice as you pointed out quite nicely.

I hold with Bennett the Sage on the topic of subs and dubs. If you're concentrating on reading the subs you're not paying as much attention to the animation on screen. I would definitely agree to your point that change in of language doesn’t really change a characters portrayal that much when you talk about subs and dubs. From that I’ve seen; the only show to actually do what these people are commenting about to the extent that whole characters are different, would be something like Dragon Ball Z. Here in the states, they basically make Goku into Superman from the moment he became a super saiyan.

Well, the discussion is more about the whether or not a dub of a character is actually so far removed from the original language performance if the dialogue is largely translated accurately as to justify the claim that the character is fundamentally changed. Where Shinji Ikari is concerned, while I always watch film in native languages, I don't believe the original language of Evangelion makes Shinji "tolerable" as that's how I watched it. Claiming the dubbed Shinji is the insufferable version is inaccurate and empty bias.

Another fantastic video Michael! It reminded me of another video I'd seen in the aether that suggested the audience prefers subs because they don't want to hear the dialogue and realize that their favorite art form is made for junior high students (or younger in some cases). Most localization changes don't destroy the original work, and are made because a direct translation is unintelligible (anyone here likes the Mega Man 8 cutscenes?)

Shinji is a horrible person on both subbed and dubbed versions, but he's a very different horrible person.
Words are only a small fraction of meaning conveyed through conversation. Even if you don't understand Japanese at all, the voice actor's emotions can overcome the language barrier. With dubs, you're just adding another translation distortion to the message.

As somebody who was there when Manga Video started distributing in the UK back in the 90s... And lived through a LOT of dubbed content when it was pretty much your only option, my opinion: It's always going to be a case-by-case basis.
Take those early Manga Video releases, for example - They would often be not just dubbed, but "localised" with whole new soundtracks. I'd go as far as saying the English dub of Dominion Tank Police, for example, was *Improved* by the music in it's English localisation, on the other hand, you've got the absolute trash localisations of the first 36 episodes Fist of the North Star series, with the out-of-place drum and bass soundtrack.
Then there are movies where the dub changes the entire tone. In the original dub of Sammo Hung/Ricky Lau's Mr Vampire, in a very similar way to Ghost Stories, is a self-referential riff on itself.
Then there have been productions where the dubbers/localisers just didn't bother to translate the original script and just made their own to fit, such as The Magic Roundabout, and Samurai Pizza Cats.
Do I *prefer* subbed content? Usually. Yes... but I'll never shun dubs, they've got the power to add as well as subtract - to truly become transformative works.... Anyone that thinks it's some kind of "betrayal" to the source is a fool.

    This is amusing. Especially watching Michael explore anime. In all seriousness Michael here are a few suggestions for shows that will probably fit your tastes, from one older SciFi weeb to another.;
    - Mobile Suit Gundam, the original. The animation is showing its age. But the story is still compelling. With a shockingly good take on a human war in space.
    - Space Battleship Yamato/Starblazers both the original and the recent modern remake. Good old school Space Opera. Does the whole end of the world thing better than Evangelion.
    - Daiguard, okay this is an obscure one. It's a Giant Robot Office Comedy played straight. That has a surprising amount of heart. In many ways a subtle satire on Evangelion. The earth had been threatened by giant mysterious alien things like Evangelions ANgels, so they built DaiGuard to combat them. But then they all disapeared. And after a few years as budgets got cut the Robot ended up as a company mascot in the care of the Marketing Department. Who are the only ones with anyone that still knows how to drive it.
    - The Irresponsible Captain Tyler, Space Opera with a dark comedy twist. Once again a comedy played straight. In the middle of a Starblazers'esque space war Tyler is a lazy incompetent Navy Officer who keeps failing upwards. In many ways the Anti-Shinji
    - Bubblegum Crisis, the original OVA. There is nothing more 80's. And this one you should watch both Dub and Sub. Because they redid all the music in English... and did a shockingly good job. There are only a few episodes. And they clearly fall somewhere between Blade Runner and Streets of Fire in what they are drawing from. The music alone is worth hunting down on TH-cam. It has a very Pat Benetar or Jim Steinman feel. In a really good way.
    - Gatchaman the original which you probably know from its badly butchered AMerican incarnation "Battle of the Planets". The original is soooo much better. No Aliens, no space travel beyond earth orbit. It's basically GI Joe vs Cobra but decades before that was a thing.

Agreed! While I torrented fansubs back in college, I’ve preferred watching dubs since The International Channel aired “Patlabor TV” (before they realized no one cared about anything except anime, and became G4) for the simple fact I’ve inherited my father’s poor eyesight, and now the Big E on the chart is fuzzy.
There’s also something to be said about the ADV releases, and appreciating how many of us in the Sci-Fi Channel Saturday mornings, Starz Action “Animidnight”, and Toonami Gundam Wing era experienced it.
It’s like being snippy about the first US release of “Mad Max”(1979), and the horrible redubbing of all the characters (including Mel Gibson redubbing Mel Gibson).
The dubbed, 90s US sanitized versions of Tekkaman Blade and Escaflowne have their place, just as Nick Meyer’s “ABC Cut” of Wrath of Khan.

I hate to agree... but it's not gatekeeping, dubs are wholesale now changing the story. And I preferred dubs back in the day because I am admittedly lazy. But you can see the culture of the dubbing company come thru over the story now. I've just come to accept that you need to watch the film or series in the original medium... and hope you can trust the sub source. It probably does not matter now in all honesty, the subs are mostly just the dubbed language. Anime being taken over by "Otaku" has kind of ruined the art form anyway. It was never meant as an art form for "incels" but it's hard to argue that they have not taken over the medium. Shinji is a pos regardless of the language lol

There is a reason most of Evangelion's merch has Rei or/and Asuka. :)
Regarding sub v. dub. During the Transformers era called "The Unicron Trilogy", the middle show "Energon" (US)/"Superlink"(JP) was notorious for it's 'bad' dub, 'butchered' story, and 'horrendous' production by the Sub-Elitests-who also praised the Japanese show as "Superior to any US show". (They were like that throughout the entire trilolgy but 'Energon' was bad). At one point, a prominent member of the fan community said (posted) something that stuck with since:
"Five episodes worth of stories stretched over fifty, with CG that was amateurish a decade ago, does not become magically better because the characters are speaking another language."

I'm dyslexic and I have to use dubs on certain anime (Kill La Kill is unwatchable to me otherwise) but it is never a hill I die on. Some dubs are fantastic (Cowboy Bebop, Golden Bot, Outlaw Star) and some are bad. There are some dubs I'm nostalgic for (Dominion Tank Police). It's very odd timing you come out with this video considering the recent controversy of recent western studios changing both dub and subtitle releases in the west.

My opinion about dubs vs subs is : if I understand the language I choose to watch the movie in original, if I don't understand a language I choose dubbed ... subtitles are always the last option.
I'm from Germany and I would say that over 99.9% of all foreign movies a tv shows are here dubbed, it's always a mystrey to me why in the USA most of the foreign movies are with subtitles.
It's almost like the US film industry wants to keep the foreign movies from the mainstream audience, subtitles can make movies boring or uninteresting.

People often forget that an English localization is also an additional opportunity for a rewrite. I'm not saying inserting one's political views or altering a story element purely for subjective purposes, but rather analyzing where the story or certain characters are weak and seeking to make improvements, smoothing over plotholes, or giving characters more depth and dimension. Nowadays, even if they are improvements, these rewrites are rarely tolerated by the fabdom.

the debate really isnt and nor has it ever really been DUB vs Sub.. Honestly the Dub crowd doesnt care its the SUB crowd doing some random gate keeping. Hell the dubs from the late 90s forward are leaps and bounds above what they were in the past as actual production was used.
There is even cross promotion between the Japanese and English dubs. The first one i remember really leaning into this was Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust in 99/00.
Of course some dubs are bad.... hell sometimes the Japanese originals are badly dubbed , You just cant speak the language so you dont notice. Hell if you want entertaining listen to the Japanese discussion of the sub vs dub of King of the Hill ....
I will say you did spend a lot of time talking about how you generally only watch things subtitled . This kinda comes off as youre defending yourself and indirectly playing to the overly vocal sub crowd. They will take it as youre siding with them. But if I have an option from the jump I prefer dubbed with subtitles. It helps me to be able to read it and hear it at the same time, I retain more of it that way. Plus I like chips.
