light pipes...never knew that was their name, this reminds me of your older classic tear down video's, I remember the first videos I watched here..it was a tear down of a car A/C pump unit, back in the raspy voice days that I really enjoyed
hmmm VDO Australia, I bet that's a bygone era now, nice reminder to our younger viewers so when they struggle to get a job there is a reason why :)

My old Falcon's odometer also died at 246,000km. I remember using your old video/link to the website that deals with the spare cogs/gears and managed to fix it perfectly. Sadly I no longer have my Falcon, Moved on to something more modern.

That IC used for the speedometer sells for about $50.00 when you can find them. They are used in Bentley and Rolls Royce speedos that often fail. They did not install a diode for reverse polarity protection. Hook the battery up backwards and pop goes the chip in a $2000 Bentley/Rolls speedo.

Those CraftRight screwdrivers are great for the money! I bought 3 different sets (precision, t-shaped ratchet and normal ratchet screwdrivers) for like $4.80 each at Bunnings! Can't go wrong!

I always want to build a gadget that counts _something_ when I find those rolling digit odometer type displays. Speedometers and tachometers might make nice cheesy VU meters if the needles can move fast enough...

I like that idea, right I know what to do with a dash cluster when I next visit my local scrappy.

That blue disc is a MOV which clamps against voltage spikes. You can drive those registers of the 50 Hz mains at 12 volts 50 Hz, when you know which the pulse wire is.
Those small plastic gears should ideally have been made of brass.

the motor on the odometer is a stepper motor basically. not much different from a synchronous motor in construction. the chips usually accepted pulses and some had an electronic division ratio of pulses in vs. pulses to the motor from what I remember. I had a databook for cherry semi that had these chips in them.

Those plastic plates with the temp and speed are white plastic spray painted and then laser etched - the paint is burnt off - I used to do that - it's actually painted twice - white and then black and the laser burns off the black paint leaving the white behind

Hook up the old speedometer to be an analog network bandwidth meter for your shop/home.

I love the full mechanical speedo's, its old tech but reliable :-))
You can stick a pot in series with that moving coil meter, but im not sure if it will move fast enough to be usefull for a hdd indicator, its bound to be well damped.

Rodalco's got the idea! If the gears were made of steel or brass it wouldn't fail!

Some of the older fuel gauges operate at a fair current, scares the bejesus out of me that they have an open wirewound potentiometer in the fuel tank! But they do usually have a voltage/current regulator, but same trick, short lead to ground, will check the gauge

Great video ED, these items have always my special interest as a meter collector. "Wedge bulbs". Those plastic gears do strip or crack and come loose on the drive shaft.

you should hook it up as a makeshift VU meter.

Thanks for sharing this - I have always wanted to know how the electronic speedo works - I have taken apart an analogue one before, but never digital!

I have a 2001 Ranger. The main odometer and trip odometer both work. What I have trouble with is resetting the trip odometer. Sometimes it will reset with a single press of the button. Most times you have to push repeatedly to get the wheels to spin back around to zero. I usually reset with each fillup and use the trip odometer as the gas gauge. I didn't reset the odometer for several tankfulls and let it spin around past 999 back through zero. It has been easier to reset since then. Does anyone have any insights as to why I have difficulty resetting?

It's funny to think that by then, the likes of British Leyland (by then calling themselves the "Rover Group") were using digital odometers in some of their cars, but Fix Or Repair Daily were still using things like that... :P

    Never had a issue.
And why would EA-ED be considered a bloody box car?
XD-XF would be more suited :/
