Dear people, please read (or Google) the history of the Scottish kilt. It was traditionally worn long, well below the knees. The Brits outlawed the wearing of the kilt (among other Scottish traditions) and the kilt was reimagined in the short version we are more used to. The new shorter kilt was designed by the British, to be worn by the British aristocracy in visiting Scotland and the kilt became stylish and fashionable. But the long kilt is the historically authentic kilt of the Scottish Highlanders. The Brits also banned the short knife worn in the stocking, and even the bagpipes. There used to be an entire medody of Scottish folk songs played on the pipes, but today only military music is played in Scotland, the old songs are lost. In Canada the old Scottish bagpipe songs are still played (often on violins) and some Canadian musicians have visited Scotland to teach the old songs to modern Scotish pipers. These would be the descendants of Scotish explorers and adventurers who married the indigenous women, and stayed in Canada. It is a weird world.
@@blueeyeswhitedragon9839 Well, I don't doubt much of what you say, but there a few points I'll address. The Phileigh-Mhor, or, Great Kilt, certainly came well below the knee, lower in fact, than what that lad's wearing. The short kilt was not designed by the British, but rather an Englishman named Rawlison, who owned an iron smelter. For his Scottish workers the great kilt was too cumbersome and dangerous for the work. This was around...1720? The Dress Act didn't happen until 1746. British uniform jackets did not fit well over a great kilt, so it adopted the short kilt. It wasn't designed for English noblemen visiting Scotland. The small dagger is called the "sgian-dubh," or, skean-doo. But none of that really matters because no matter how you look at it, that young man's kit is a mess.

PS - I was taught to kneel with the kilt on. Then whilst kneeling come to attention with your top half, keeping the knees bent. In this position, the bottom of the kilt should just be touching the floor and no more. When you stand up, it should be just above the knee, and definitely not just below the calf muscle 😉
His baton sets were marvelous back straight eyes to the front . Ok the kilt looked like his mother's skirt and no sporran , but apart from that he wouldn't look out of place in any Scottish regiment band
