Hi Janki.. keep some food (broken rice - cooked or uncooked, bajra, roti etc.) and water near your nest place. Food should not be oily and spicy. Clean the water bowl every day. This will attract the birds. They will take time to find the feeders but once they do, they will be there the whole day. I also started keeping the feeders recently and now they are all over. After the nest is abandoned, Do we need to clean it or it will be used by other sparrows. What is their breeding cycle. I wonder why their numbers have reduced and pigeons have increased.
You can use the same box...just by cleaning the older nest.... Because sparrows like to build own nest instead of using readymade...Their breeding cycle is almost of 40 days...starting from building nest to the first fly of baby sparrows...

Wow, when you mention that the meter box is a dangerous place for a bird to build it's nest, I thought you're going to say it's dangerous for them to get electrecuted. This nest box is very simple and can be made using used carton boxes as well. Just ensure that the hole is not too big but just enough for the sparrow. Also, put it in a place which is secure and safe, spexially from cats
Undoubtedly good job but wild birds can easily enter in the nest and destroy it even grab the baby birds. I think there should be entrance like a small PVC pipe. It would protest the nest/eggs/babies from strangers.

Attach one stick in middle of the box so the bird can stand on it . so it goes into its house

I have also made nesting for birds. Brahminy maina has laid 3 eggs and have chicks also. Also sparrow live their.
We too have done the similar thing in our home to help the sparrows. It is wonderful to see them make their nest in the box.
In Tamil bible these sparrows are called Adaikalan kuruvi. These seek refuge from us.. We should give them shelter,food and water...
