    Fellow zone 6b person here! Love seeing what you've done to your backyard. My husband and I have 1/8th acre and we're going to be transforming our yard into a food forest and this is goals! Thanks for the inspiration!

    You’re being real and give such encouragement to people out there who need to hear this. Gardening helped me through COVID and still is. I’m encouraging others to be kind to nature so it can help us live.Continue with the great work that you’re doing.

      Thank you for such an inspiring comment Macrina! I'm a therapist and I'm writing my dissertation on the neurobiology of Nature-based interventions to treat psycho- physiological stress. I'm pretty sure pills and plunder isn't a sustainable path forward. Best regards to you.

    awesome stuff. why so many figs? I wanna try meyer lemon potted. im same zone

    • @Viva_la_natura
      @Viva_la_natura  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      because growing figs is now widely recognized as an addiction. I'm a moderate recreational user compared to most growers on "ourfigs" and "figaholics".

      @@Viva_la_natura I just wasn’t sure if they were specifically suited for here or something! I also live in CT zone 6b and I’m working on starting stuff up in our backyard

    I’m actually in the same zone as you in Brewster ny. How long can you make your seasons last? From what month to what month?

    HI Paul, like your garden. Are you protecting your in grand figs in winter? How much snow you get in general?

    • @Viva_la_natura
      @Viva_la_natura  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Timely question. Yes, I've built specialized fig covers from 55 gallon water drums, lined with R15 insulation. If you go to google and search "jrdwhirst ourfigs fingers crossed" it will explain the method with photos. This man has a fig orchard in Rhode Island, he gets no dieback, no damage and bountiful harvests. My potted figs go in the garage but I'm moving towards more inground as maintaining them is just laborious

      P.s. snow is good, it provides ground insulation. When it comes to figs, some speculate that desiccation takes place because of harsh cold wind more so than cold. However, most figs are hardy to 20-15f it's true that some figs are more cold hardy, BUT if you are taliking more than a few days of exposure to 15f below, kiss your tree's lignified wood goodbye. But, cold hardy trees will come back and give you main crop fruit that year (no breba), less cold hardy trees will just die at the roots.

      everyday? I am in zone 6b Kansas, i had chicago hardy about 1 ft tall they both died and just nlw in may are slowly coming out, I just planted a 4.5 ft brown turkey in the ground this week, i figure the trunk is about 1" so it may survive better, I put it in a corner of a wood fence to protect a bit, the other 2 where in the open, I dint mulch or did anything

    Great videos! I think I have watched them all. Do you purchase all the rocks?

    • @Viva_la_natura
      @Viva_la_natura  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If Connecticut has one thing it's rocks. My advice would be if there is a large nursery or building site doing some kind of digging you can ask them if you can take the rocks assuming you have a way to transport them; they are heavy!. I was bored..it was January, and in retrospect no way I would do it again.

      @@juliekey8788 if you're in the New Haven County area, I picked them up from Broken Arrow Nursery which is very close to my house; they are rough on a vehicle to transport.

    More than half of my backyard is hard shade. Are there any food plants you would recommend for an area that gets less than 3 hours of morning sun per day? Also in CT, on the border of 6a/6b.

    • @Viva_la_natura
      @Viva_la_natura  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend anything that's a green leafy vegetable. Salad greens, Asian greens, leafy mustard greens.. believe it or not having a shady garden can be a mixed blessing because we have such a short spring now, it gets very hot very quick and anything that's a green leafy vegetable will be more susceptible to bolting in full sun.

    Fantastic garden!!! I would love to visit it in person since I’m from CT. I also run a permaculture group (online now with weekly Sunday meetings) and I’m sure everyone else would love to see it on a field trip. Let’s connect. Check out Permaculture/Sustainable Living Group on Meetup
