I feel like Heretic is their most underrated album. I didn't like it when I first heard it, but it really has some great song structures and intricate riffing.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. If the production was better and if had they removed so much of the interpretive metal crap in between some songs, this could have been better. I believe that this album has my favorite Trey riffs throughout.
The insanus album was my first morbid angel album and being new to death metal at the time it was almost to extrem for me but i kinda liked it to this day and never understod why people hate on it so much. 🐐
Yesss Alters of madness is the best album out of morbid angel's discography with covenant coming right behind it I can't get chapel of ghouls and Immortal rites out of my head the riffing is so damn crunchy.
Wooo Domination at six? Its my favourite from them ( Coventant number 2) and i agree with you on being the most "morbid angel album" cause its the most complete in the death metal (Altar is too "death trash" to be my favourite)
sorry dude, as a HUGE morbid angel fan, i'm incredibly surprised at how low you rate blessed are the sick. it's a very close race between altars of madness and blessed are the sick as their best album, but i rate blessed above altars, mainly because it's more nuanced, and isn't just speed, speed, speed. the solo in the song rebel lands is actually my favorite solo they have ever played. that album was a great mix of both speed and tranquility, for lack of a better term. and of course, the acoustic desolate ways by brunelle is just breathtaking.
Domination and Blessed are the Sick are my favorite. Caesar's Palace and Hatework are awesome songs! But then again I like the slow and drone-y heavy stuff.
I heard metallica play the intro to fall from grace in 1988 at what was called unauthorized recordings in Australia which was a loop hole in the law which allowed fan recordings of all bands being sold at major music stores. this was in the mid 90's. It's probably all on you tube now. They didn't use a click track on Formulas which helps it sound heavier like grind core, it was a very spiritual album. I was listening to it while walking through Ankor Watt in Cambodia and fitted very well. Nice review
my morbid angel album ranked: 1 - altars of madness 2 - covenant 3 - heretic 4 - formulas fatal to the flesh 5 - blessed are the sick 6 - domination 7 - gateways to annihilation
My ranking is almost identical to yours but Thy Kingdom Come 7'' was released in '88 with Wayne Hartsell on drums before Sandoval joined. Vincent's voice is on the same vein as Altars. The fact that the second half of Blessed is re-recordings of Abominations deserves a mention too.
For me 1. Alters Of Madness 2. Blessed Are The Sick 3. Convenat 4. Formulas Fatal To The Flesh 5. Gateways To The Annillation 6. Domination 7.heretic 8. Kingdoms Distained
Before watching your ranking, I think I would rank them like this; let’s see how close our rankings are lol 9. Illud 8. Heretic 7. Kingdoms Disdained 6. Domination 5. Formulas Fatal to the Flesh 4. Gateways to Annihilation 3. Blessed are the Sick 2. Covenant 1. Altars
For years Formulas was my favourite.. And sort of still is. I have not yet watched the video either.. I paused it at the start to look at the comments. I'm also very fond of Heretic. Just recently I had a revisit to Altars and actually ended up enjoying it. Also greatly enjoy Blessed.
Great band review 🤘🤘🤘 blessed is my favourite then alters then covenant. In fairness though blades for baal is a cracking song from an other wise pile of crap insanus album. I'd recommend another listen to that bad boy
Morbid Angel ranking: 9 Illud Divinium Shitanus 8 Kingdoms Disdained 7 Heretic 6 Domination 5 Formulas Fatal to the flesh 4 Blessed are the Sick 3 Gateways to Annihilation 2 Altars of Madness 1 Covenant
To me Trey is the best metal guitarist of all time. Covenant is their masterpiece, while all the releases are awesome. I think MAs sound is one of the most original while all/most other bands have just copied Cannibal Corpe's Vile over and over. In modern Death Metal I have to put CC as more influential because Vile changed everything about death metal for better or worse. Illud is a very misunderstood release of MA. While yeah some of the tracks are wacked and out of place there are so many other songs that are so good. Existo Vulgore, Blades of Baal, 10 More Dead and others are great. I like that album and have no problem with them going that direction more. Just me maybe.
Before we proceed any further.. I have paused the video at the 12 minute mark.. Ohhh Just so that I can put my list together.. Which does tend to change from year to year depending. I have contemplated between a long rant.. I love my long rants.. Or.. Or Orthoxicol.. A list. I find lists so difficult. 1. Formulas.. I loved this album. Haven't heard it in a while.. Which makes this difficult. I remember when it came out.. Had not thought of MA in some time. The Domination era had come and gone. So my friend says to me.. New Morbid Angel.. Oh.. Yeah.. It's different. New singer.. Very different. He gave me the cd to borrow and said.. See what you think. I took it home.. Pressed play in the Good old cd player.. Some of you may not know what a cd player is.. Just kidding. From the moment I pressed play.. I loved it.. The album flowed so smoothly. I had it on repeat for months. I actually didn't really end up getting that cd back to my friend.. He said it was ok and that he had been listening to other bands anyway. 2: Covenant: Because I was listening to it a few times recently and it Kicks Ass.. Simple as that. 3: Blessed are the sick: Also.. That I have been listening to this album a few times a couple month back.. Just a great album. 4: Gateways.. Nice and slow chunky album. 5: Altars.. Ok.. I had Issue with this for years.. Because of everything and that I had developed association with it. I was a "Christian" on and off for many years "Born again" Whatever that means.. And I took issue with regard of most the lyrics on Altars.. And I had not heard the album since 1990. I'm secular now and view the NT from a historical point of view. So.. I had a revisit to it about 2 months ago.. Wondering what I would think. On the first revisit listen.. I was like.. I'm not sure about this.. It's Interesting.. I got though the album and thought.. Well that brought back association.. But yet different. A day later I went back and had another listen.. Interesting. I was listening to the lyrics that I was once offended and challenged by.. and realizing.. That they are just breaking down.. Challenging the perception that society has.. The traditions that society has almost set in concrete. In fact when I dissected it all.. The lyrics are philosophical in nature.. They question and and get you to question and pull apart and to give new meaning to those concepts. An enjoyable album. 6: Heretic: Terrific album.. Ohh And I have the 2 cd version as I bought it the day it came out. Many people complain about the production of this album.. But I like it. 7: What is left here.. Illud.. I'd prefer to listen to this than Domination. Not into the Domination album anymore.. Either of them. Haven't heard it in years.. There are a couple tracks from it I could probably enjoy like Where the slime live.. Ears to hear.. That's about it. I used to love the title track. Ohhh Yeah about Illud.. I'm think have I missed something? Yeah I should probably speak about Illud. Ok.. So.. 2011.. I'm busy listening to the Stones.. The Rolling Stones.. Yes.. Is there another kind? And on the youtube wall at the time.. Illud shows up.. And I'm like Ok. Had not heard MA in sometime. I became curious. I pressed play. Now at first.. I wasn't sure if TH-cam had mixed up albums.. Like if they put the wrong audio up.. Because I was like.. This doesn't sound right.. Have I pressed play on the wrong album.. Yet I did find it exciting.. But.. Huh? Then about a minute in realized it Was in fact MA. I'll be honest.. Haven't heard it in years.. Since about 2016. Not sure I'll ever go back to it. I remember it as being fun and adventurous.. However.. A couple of cringe worthy tracks. 8: Domination: Once upon a time many years ago back in the 90's.. I entertained this album. Long since past. 9: Kingdoms disdained.. What the bloody hell happened there? I was super excited about Steve Tucker's return.. Omg. Then Piles of little arms was released and I was underwhelmed by it in everyway. In January of 2018 I listened to KD about 8 times over.. Just was not feeling it. Could not get into it. It did not sync with me. Not to mention the terrible album cover. I think it's Declaring new law that I loved.. That was it. I tried to be excited about this album as I listened to it.. But it wasn't happening at the time. Have gone back a few times since to try and like things like Garden of disdain.. But no.. And I really need to like the whole album.. Biggest disappointment of 2018. Just like Slash 4 was the biggest disappointment of this year.. Because of Myles Kennedy who ruins everything.. Todd Kerns should be on vocals.
