    Part 7: • Martin Shkreli on Buyi...
    Part 5: • Martin Shkreli: I Made...
    Part 1: • Martin Shkreli on How ...
    --------
    F-ormer pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli discusses his inclusion in Forbes' 30 Under 30 list and the subsequent controversy surrounding his decision to raise the price of a critical drug. Recognized by Forbes in a much smaller cohort of 30 individuals, Shkreli reflects on the significance of the list and criticizes Forbes for later expanding the list to 600 people per field. He also dismisses the publication, predicting its eventual bankruptcy.
    In 2014, Shkreli secured $4 million in Series A funding, acquiring the rights to a life-saving drug for a rare kidney stone disease. The drug's price was sharply increased from $1.50 to $30 per pill under Shkreli's leadership. He defends the hike, stating the previous price didn’t reflect the drug's critical value and noting that the number of patients using the drug doubled despite the increased cost. Shkreli argues that high prices are necessary to sustain the development of life-saving drugs, relying on insurance rather than out-of-pocket payments to cover costs. This controversial approach, he insists, ensures the availability and continuation of essential treatments.

  • @ameenhudson4372
    @ameenhudson4372 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

    Understand that he said the reason he raised the price was NOT because they needed $30 a pill to keep mass-producing it but simply because he thought a drug that was saving people’s life shouldn’t be so cheap - esp in contrast to other companies making something similar and selling it for a higher rate. This is greed/avarice in full display. You could have made enough to profit AND mass-produce the drug without raising the price TWENTY times the original rate per pill!
    Also, the thought that it shouldn’t be so cheap was not based on any objective data besides his own thoughts and opinion about it. He can dress it up and make it sound like he was doing something noble but he wasn’t.
    This is exactly what is wrong with pharmaceutical companies.

    You can do R&D (and then distribution) through the US Government or Private. Historically, the US Gov't has been a horrible allocator of funds for just about anything. Red tape and waste. Private sector is where the innovation lies (mostly). Incentives must be in place for the Private sector. There is no "correct" answer, just one that is clearly worse than the other. He said they did $40MM on the one drug. Spread that out amongst the insurance carriers and/or gov't funding to try and save 2000 lives. $40MM is a drop in the bucket for the industry and this country.

      Agreed, but from what I heard when all this broke out, and is not in this interview. He charged the insurance company the hundreds of dollars and not the individual themselves. They paid somewhere around 10 or so bucks for a prescription. Also he had a program from what I heard that if you couldn't afford the drug at all, and you could prove you have no insurance, and your financial well-being wasn't up to par. He would give it to you for free, all you had to do was pay shipping. He didn't care to much for the insurance companies, and would call them out in the past as thieves. So he basically did the same thing back to them. Not sure why that question wasn't asked by Vlad just yet, or maybe he warming up to some sort of follow up question leading to that.

    R&D costs, manufacturing costs and marketing costs should determine the cost of medicines. His company didn’t do the R&D and manufacturing costs are low for this drug. How much you can pressure insurance companies to pay shouldn’t determine price. That leads to higher premiums for everyone else. This type of unethical business practices have been a major contributor to our horrible healthcare system.

  • @ronblack7870

    the real problem is he says the texas company was selling 40 million/ yr but that was a money loser? when the cost of production was likely 10% of that at most. so instead they were making other drugs that they made more money on? so those other drugs are overpriced. it's the entire industry . eisenhower should have warned of the drug industrial complex not the military industrial complex.

    Interesting argument here. I understand the justification for raising the price, especially if it mostly affects the insurance companies. The bigger issue is that development of many pharmaceuticals is financed by the government and therefore tax paying citizens have already purchased the drug, so to speak. I guess the bigger question is why is there a for-profit pharmaceutical industry in America at all?
