The Fantom comes with a standard USB Type B cable that will transfer both MIDI and audio to and from your Fantom device and DAW host. you can also get standard 5 pin DIN MIDI cables with either 5pin or USB type A at the other end which can connect to your host. It all depends on what you want to connect your Fantom to.
It is written on Roland forum that the Fantom G can't transfer midi and audio signal to your Mac if the OS is later than 10.10 (Yosemite) Is that true ? Thank you
It seems to be. I hacked the old driver for one of the updates but had no success once the operating system got past a certain point. 1.5 is the last available from Roland. I had to switch to using an audio interface for midi and audio after the macOS went past about Big Sur or Catalina.
Hi Neil, I can't seem to get my Roland Fantom G6 to work with Logic.. Let alone be seen by my mac as a midi controller... Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've downloaded the driver for 10.9 (I'm still on 1.9.5) I've installed the librarian thing, I even installed the hardware onto the Fantom itself.. Is there something I'm missing? I really hope you can help me out..
i cannot get my fantom g6 to work with logic pro , osx 10.15. i have installed the recent fantom drivers. i have connected via usb, but it will not connect to use with the logic instruments.
Hi there. It's possible that your Fantom is connected, but not configured to send MIDI (we need the MIDI TX transmit switch for this.) At the left of the pads, 1. press the pad mode button so that it blinks. 2. Now press number 10. 3. Finally press pad number 1 to light it up. This will make your Fantom transmit MIDI data on channel 1. If none of the pads were lit up, it's possible that logic was not receiving any MIDI signals from your Fantom even though you had all the right drivers.
sorry how do i actually use the preset sounds on fantom so that it appears as it is on logic? because it is coming up as the sounds of sounds of logic (like guitar) but im actualyl selecting grand piano on my fantom
@ You'll need to have Logic send it's MIDI out to the Fantom. Use Studio Mode - it becomes a 16 voice sound module. Sorry about the delay - I JUST saw this!!
Thanks for getting in touch. I really don't think there is a way. Both MIDI and Audio functionality disappeared a few MACOS upgrades ago. At one stage I hacked a driver after an OSX upgrade and got it working (about 8 years ago) but the OS advances have been too significant for me to be able to do that anymore. Way beyond my skill level. At that point I ponied up for an external audio interface and used a 5 pin MIDI cable to that so audio and MIDI are both externally managed now. That said, I bought the G in 2009, upped the RAM to 1GB, installed the EP and Drums ARX cards and it has given NO problems in 15 years. I'm getting closer to retirement now so decided to replace the G with an EX. It arrived today. January 23, 2025. Pricey, but tax deductible. AND I now have MIDI and Audio through the USB. EX lacks a few things the G offers but makes up for that in other ways. If the EX gets me through another 15 years I'll be a happy muso. I recommend you plug a MIDI cable from the OUT on your G to an interface or your computer, choose Pad Mode 10 and activate Pad 1 to transmit on channel 1. Most plugins will then respond with MIDI learn. The pads on the G are rather G specific and won't work for finger drumming. (Unless you go to a lot of effort programing the pads with MIDI nerd stuff to trigger a note.) That's not standard, oddly enough. You can use it as a MID controller - just not through the computer cable coming out of the back of the G. Just use good old fashioned 5 pin DIN MIDI Cable. Audio in the box is also no longer an option with the lack of driver. Just move those two jobs outside the box and it should be as good as the day you got it!! Have a great 2025. (Neil)
Thanks Argon. You've got me there - I've never tried! It would be logical to have that in system settings, perhaps along with the screensaver functions, but I can't see it there. Roland Clan seems to be failing at the moment (SQL error) so no joy there. I'll keep looking into it :)

So I an exploring all the Fantom feature before I pull the trigger thanks still can't figure out how to use as controller and sound source at the same time
+Justin Edsell What is it you'd like to(k)ontrol with the Fantom? If it's Kontakt, then using Live Mode to play both internal and external sounds may be something that interests you (th-cam.com/video/txLeeTMMncU/w-d-xo.html) I can't afford a Kontol, so make do with a KeyLab61 for most of my MIDI control.
How do you make all the sounds on roland phantom go onto logic pro so you can play the instruments that's on the phantom onto logic pro? Let me know thanks
You create an EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT track (MIDI track) in logic and point that at the Fantom. The sounds will not exist in Logic - only the performance that you record that then plays the Fantom for you each time you play the sequence. Alternatively you can record the audio of the Fantom direct to an audio track.
Cool, do you have a video on how to do this successfully? Also, I really hate that editor librarian software. It slows my computer down and is very unstable at times. Do I need this in order for logic x to recognize the Fantom G for setting up other midi functions in Logic X such as synchronation and slave/ master options?@
You'd connect the Fantom to the computer with USB and the Fantom audio outs to the apollo. And yes - you could use it as a controller. But the pads will have limited use. You really have a Pitchbend, Modulation, 8 sliders and 4 knobs to send messages to protools with. If you use the pads they wont tend to send standard MIDI messages. I fyou want to just record Fantom Audio you are good to go.
Neil Wall First, thank you so much for replying back! I really appreciate it. I actually have the X8 model, which is discontinued now I believe and doesn't have a USB connection. So I assume that might change things a bit? Also, after hearing what you said about the pads, I wonder if I would just be better off at this point (15 years later haha) to go ahead and purchase a 61 key midi controller instead? I haven't recorded in almost 10 years and I finally couldn't take it anymore and decided to set up a new home studio. I'm so amazed with all this new technology now. I really hope the new generation appreciates how easy it is to create now and even get your music heard. Would you agree that it might be more beneficial to go ahead and buy a dedicated 61 key midi controller and if so, any you recommend? linop412 Code 61 is OK and has a good reputation. I have an Arturia Keylab 61 but the keybed has been pretty fragile. I also have a NI Komplete Kontrol 61 but they are over priced with limited sliders/knobs. If you wanted to use pads on the Fantom you could program RPS to contain a MIDI event - a tiny bit painful - but it could work. It's the only way I've found to use the Fantom G pads with a DAW or Mainstage. Also, the Apollo is very high end - very cool. You can use the 5 pin DIN MIDI connectors on the X8 by getting a lead that will plug into your USB on the computer - or possibly a thunderbolt adapter if you want to plug into the Apollo. (I'd just plug into the computer..) www.storedj.com.au/m-audio-uno-usb-midi-interface is an example of the lead I'm talking about.

hey so the drivers for roland fantom g are not updated for my computer os x el caption .so if i use some sort of midi usb convertor or just the midi cords into a midi interface, will this work for me ?
