Thank you President Drake for these encouraging words and also for your leadership during COVID. It made me proud to see how the UC's, including my own UC San Diego, rose to meet the pandemic with smart, well-informed action.
Graduate student workers do 60-70% of the teaching at UC and the university is only spending 1.5% of its budget on them. The vast majority of them are seriously rent burdened and living under poverty line. (Imagine yourself making $2300 a month while having to pay $1600 on rent! This is a typical situation). Now if for all these big talks about higher education, this person is not willing to take care of his own workers at his own institution, what else can we call him but hypocritical.
