It's wonderful that MGM did the song in such a complete version. Perry is pretty terrific!

Despite everything, "Words and Music" is worth a look see just to hear the music! Sort of like watching "The Big Broadcast of 1936" just to hear Bob Hope/Shirley Ross sing "Thanks for the Memory"; the film forgettable, the song memorable. Or watching "Lady Be Good" just to hear Anne Sothern sing "The Last Time I saw Paris" by Kern/Hammerstein.

Perry Como was the seventh son of a seventh son, - where I come from this is a sign of a person with healing powers, - and Como's voice certainly had that power.

Never was there a scandal reported about him, a faithful family man.

Perry Como with Broadway star Allyn McLerie a few decades before she was "the Big Guy's" wife on WKRP in Cincinnati!

And a few decades before she was let go from the Broadway company of "Funny Girl," in which she played Ziegfeld girl Georgia James.

Rafael Storm Yet she was Broadway's "Miss Liberty" and was the Amy of "Once in Love With Amy" from "Where's Charley" with Ray Bolger. And she was great with Doris Day in "Calamity Jane" on film.

... and I believe that before her death last year, she was the last surviving cast member of this star-studded movie. The big names appearing in it were beyond any movie I'd ever seen.

It must be 30 years since this was shown on TV here in the Uk and I can't remember the movie - I'd certainly forgotten this song was in it - I wonder who th "Mr Omah" is who rhymes with "No ma and no pa"?

Lorenz hart- maybe the best lyricist of all. young como's dulcet tones anchor this spectacular production.
by the way, "mr. omah" is a sly homage to omar kayyam

I love Perry Como, but after you hear Ella Fitzgerald's version nothing else compares

Who IS that that sounds like Bing?

    • @jameshorn270

Agreed. I thought it was Bing until they did the close up. I was not aware of Como for another decade, but then he was fairly frequently on TV and I do remember him as good and relaxed in the mold of Bing, but not as close in voice.

Me too! I thought it was Bing until they zoomed in on the people. Then Perry's face was unmistakable.

Sleepy Perry did not do this tune justice. Just listen to the Mel Torme version.

Agree. When I'm looking for lively, Perry Como does not come to mind. ;)

I've heard both and, as much as I like Mel Torme', I still prefer the Como version.
