I mean, he’s RIGHT. Everything 16 is saying is correct. Yes, what’s being done to Gohan isn’t fair, he’s a little kid, he should be playing in the woods and studying bugs, not fighting for his life and the lives of everyone else in the world. But since when has this been about what’s fair? If he doesn’t want this to get so much worse, he needs to look past himself and become the hero he was supposed to be.

Taka resting his chin on his hands watching Lani belt out Day of Fate reminds me of Kevin Conroy describing how overjoyed Mark Hamill was watching other voice actors work on Batman Animated Series.
Honestly, I'd buy a Lani solo album. Though all three guys have solid voices!
It’s just wonderful that Lani couldn’t hold himself back, he HAD to sing, he just had to. Lip synch wasn’t doing it. He was too moved. The emotions were happenong. He had to sing. And everyone was happy to let him. It’s always a good day when Lanipator sings!
I 100% Agree with Nick about the whole copyright minefield bit.
The fact we still have abridge channels at all in this current era is a blessing.
Rip all those abridged series that were copyrighted to oblivion. I still miss Attack on Titan abridged.
The fact that either of the channels are still around these days is a blessing. Copyright shit has gotten so much worse since the last episode came out, so I get why that was one of the reasons they didn’t want to continue after the Cell arc.

"Anytime we had a disagreement, it wasn't because you hated what I wrote, it's because you loved what you wrote so much more" is the best kind of argument for writers to have -- you really get to see another person's much more in-depth perspective on a scene.
Because it's specifically between writers that LOVE their job and want to contribute their full effort, a LOT of the entertainment industry (games included) REALLY need folks who want to try and want to learn. Once again, it's why I respect the Hell out of TFS and its members.
Kaiser's imposter syndrome is really shining through here. If you read this... you earned all this love and admiration, and you have a lot of it. ❤
100% this
Watching all of these commentaries makes me wanna hug the fuck out of Kaiser. He works so endlessly hard and rarely gives himself the credit he deserves.
Also the artist's curse. When you keep thinking back on something you made some time ago, but didn't have the skills or knowledge you have now, and are forever unhappy with things you make because you keep learning and improving.
All of team four star deserve the love and admiration
Kaiser cares SO MUCH about this silly little anime parody show he started on Skype with some friends. Great things have small beginnings. He didn’t set out to make Art. It just happened.
Here to add to the Kaiser Hype train. You gave us something we have gladly viewed and re-viewed on numerous occasions.
Plus, his AMVs are absolute Jet Fuel
Honestly I like how in DBZA Mr. Satan clearly knows that the ki being slung around is real, but he's keeps pretending its all a bunch of tricks for the camera. more of a noble buffoon, rather than in idiotic levels of denial. hell makes tossing 16's head and befriending Buu actually ballsy as hell
Satan is one of the reasons why the Saiyans (and their families) (also Piccolo) are even able to live in peace on Earth. His PR management and Bulma’s money are what keep the aliens anonymous and allow them to live freely.
I mean, it's the same in DBZ proper, it's just that DBZ never has a "That camera's broken, right?" moment where Mr. Satan outright admits he doesn't know what's going on/stops making up bs explanations for the Ki stuff to the audience
I'm glad to see Scott taking his goddamn flowers. His co-stars are just being the best and not even stepping into his spotlight for a second! Just letting him HAVE it and you can see how difficult it is...for him to just take it. But he's in his element and he's looking back on his work and accepting what is his accolades. :)
Such a change from the first few episodes where he's so hesitant to praise himself for a second.
The amount of restraint it is taking to not joke about Scott taking it hard is more than I'd like to admit.

45:00 Within abridged canon, it'd actually make sense if all androids had a "be nice to 16" subroutine. Because 16 is designed to be Gero's son. And even if he didn't get around to doing it for himself, it'd make sense that they all should like him because that's how this all started.
No wait. That was the ones from the Trunks' timeline. BUT THEY KILLED THAT 16 BECAUSE "No one's gonna tell me what to do."
And fueling it more, Gero never had time to finish installing that into this 17 and 18. They just naturally liked the dude, because they chose to.
@@Demonboy007 I don't follow. As far as we know, only 2 androids in the Future Trunks timeline. How does that connect?
@@Redflametrow It's more an alternative way of things playing out. Because since no knows about Gero in Trunks's timeline, the Androids come out of nowhere. Trunks never met 19 and Gero unlike the current timeline, so you can make the theory that 17 and 18 just wiped the entire facility out. And them seeing 16 in stasis and realizing Gero made them feel to him might've pissed them off. The boys even say the line in episode 47: "No one is telling me what to do anymore."
@@Demonboy007 I mean I guess so. Just that feels pretty close to canon.
In my headcanon Vegeta still killed 19 because he likely wouldve trained regardless and we see him ss briefly in future trunks movie / I say all 3 androids were released but 16 either left or got destroyed because his purpose was to kill Goku who was already dead due to the virus. @@Demonboy007
“And then he died too” is such a great line and perfect description of Trunks’s life.
"He's eleven" "I'm SIX!" is another exchange that is so well done because it feels so mundane but the situation and context make it hilarious
Taka’s reaction to Lani’s singing at 1:20:12 is one of those little background moments that just feel so wholesome
How does anyone sing like this during such an emotional moment? I've tried. It's like...it's impossible! You get all choked up. He's just that frickin good.
Love that part lol.
16's line about all of Trunks' stories ending with "and then he died too" really hits hard, poor blue haired future-boy.
And then he has to work with these people who Time after time after time don't do what needs to be done to save the future ESPECIALLY there leader, the "hero" his mom talked about......to quote the kid himself

@@Brandonweifu I think spending a year alone with Vegeta takes the biscuit there.
Don't do what they need to? Goku is arguably responsible for his universe getting wiped out. @@ItsB3enLikeThis Did you watch the commentary? That was the point they were explaining.
Gohan was put in an extremely unfair situation he can't escape from. Goku made him fight Cell which he believed was for "the greater good", the Cell Jr's attacking the Z Warriors is Gohan's fault for not wanting to fight, the destruction of Earth, and the death of billions will be his fault. But why is it his fault? Because he has potential to be the "best" fighter. He's just a child, that's bs, Goku didn't realize that Gohan isn't a fighter, but it's too late, Cell has changed his target from Goku to Gohan.
But on the other side, how much can Gohan excuse not being a fighter to allow what's happening? He isn't a fighter okay, then Cell will just have his friends, family, and then the entire planet killed, but he's blameless because he isn't a fighter right? Even though it's unfair for Gohan, like Cell stated, there are people (Yamcha) who are much weaker than him, but they're still fighting because Earth is their home and lives are at stake. Then there's 16's speech, like he mentioned, Future Trunk's stories all end with "and then he died too", that's why he returned to the past, the last hope of the future being the time machine. And when he finds out that whatever he does in the past doesn't affect the future, he still chose to stay, why? Because he's lived a life where people could only hope they survive another day, because at any day, the Cyborgs can just show up and kill them, and he doesn't want the people of the past to experience the same.
There's a line that can be excused, and Gohan had crossed it (albeit unfairly without a choice in the matter), there's no "I'm not a fighter", excuse anymore, if he does nothing people will die, either lives will perish or he kills Cell, that's the ultimatum he's been dealt with. That's why when he finally snaps, as they explained, it isn't a triumphant "The hero has awakened", it's a tragic "The hero was forcibly awakened", it's epic in the sense that Goku was right, and this was the untapped hidden potential that we had seen time and time again, finally being awakened, but also tragic because an 11 year old had to throw away the innocence they held in order to awaken it.
That's the dichotomy of 16's speech. On one hand, Gohan is forced to be a fighter and that's unfair, on the other hand Gohan is the only one that can fight Cell. The "you think you're better than everyone else" doesn't literally mean Gohan think he's better than everyone else, but holding onto pacifism and not being a fighter ain't shit if Cell is gonna kill him, his friends, and his family.

Gohan hiding his power level to try and fake his own death is just classic Piccolo
'If i play dead, I won't have to fight'
I’ve always loved the way Piccolo says “…Gohan…” after the transformation in this version. It expresses so much. Both shock and pride at Gohan’s power, and yet also, a kind of disappointment and sorrow that Gohan’s been pushed to this point, losing his innocence based on the expectations of his father; something I’m sure Piccolo is VERY familiar with and doesn’t wish for him.

@@gabeskai It's one of the reasons Scrubs was adored by so many people. With all the gags and ongoing jokes, it's easy to forget that the setting is in a hospital until a really fucked up situation snaps you back to reality, as it usually does the characters as well. Legitimately the best version of Gohans scene.
32:58 I feel like it's worth mentioning, that just about every superhero is a reactive character, they don't go out of their way to act until something threatens something they want to protect.
For years I've thought of Gohan as a Spider-Man type of character, he doesn't fight because it's fun, he fights because he has this incredible strength and if he does nothing people could get hurt.
(Also, I did hear "Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am")
Well, yeah. Superheroes solve problems they're presented, they don't go looking for problems (looking for problems tends to create them). Interestingly, villains are the driving force of stories, not heroes, since they're proactive, create the problems heroes must deal with, and keep things moving.
Honestly, Goku dying could draw a parallel to uncle Ben.
The funny thing is Gohan and Spiderman are both considered INFP personality types. Particularly popular ones.
Their discussion of 16’s speech and Gohan’s transformation hits so hard always, but the concept that you cannot be silent in the face of injustice - “the good man doing nothing”. Stand by that speech, it is a fantastic piece of writing, it was performed incredibly and it’s a message more people should internalise.
it's great but I do want to note it should be remembered that there is a vast gulf of difference between doing nothing in the face of injustice and pacifism as a philosophy, because the latter does not by any means equal doing the former
it's not cowardly to refuse to perpetuate cycles of violence or participate in what for the majority of history have been jingoistic imperialist dickwaving contests between hereditary elites who think nothing of spending human lives like cash for their own interests
@@Feasco i agree, but i always felt like thats kinda the point they were trying to make. Choosing to not continue the cycle is all well and good in theory, but this is a scenario where there is LITERALLY no other option. Its different in real life, but here if gohan doesnt kill then everyone he knows and loves will genuinely die horrifying deaths on the spot. Itd be like if police officers were refusing to shoot at someone who was torturing hostages just because they believe life is sacred, because of course IT IS but theres times when you really do need to dispose of or at least pacify a greater evil for the sake of not letting it continue on till theyre bored. Life as a whole would be better if we could all agree doing bad things is shitty, but unfortunately that type of utopia just isnt the reality, and though its a rare case watching a bad person do bad things when youre genuinely the ONLY person on planet earth who could step in and stop them just makes you negligent rather than a pacifist. Pacifism is a positive ideal in theory, but not a ideology that is feasible in all circumstances when it comes to wanting the greater good to always prevail. This was one of those rare situations where pacifism genuinely helps nobody
Cant wait for people to agree with their statement on pacifism, passivity, and ignorance and doing exactly what they critisized, because we know exactly, that the people that talk the most, are those that arent doing anything
@@tntkff9901I get the general sentiment behind the saying, but I feel there is often a nuance that is overlooked.
'Prey' animals are absolutely capable of ruining your day. Rhinos and Hippos lack sharp teeth, but absolutely will destroy anything they perceive as a threat getting too close to their territory. A Moose unless it is immature, old, sick or injured is fully capable of wrecking a pack of wolves trying to bring it down. Yes, there are plenty of animals whose main method of survival is simply to run away from danger, but the 'meek gentle herbivore' view can often be quite off the mark just because it doesn't need to hunt to survive. Horn and hoof are just as capable of ending lives as fang and claw.
Which is crazy because in the frieza arc he was the exact opposite! but i understand why.. from the sayian saga to namek gohan had no time to chill.. no peaceful times.. like in the android saga.. so he became little passive over time..
Seeing Scott get red-eyed when talking about the finale in the beginning made me cry. Just wanna give that man a hug and tell him he did it, his work paid off.
That'll do Kaiser, that'll do...

It's taking all of my willpower to not immediately skip to Gohan's SSJ2 transformation. TFS has my definitive version of it, it still makes me emotional watching it
You gets should never discount your impact on the dragon ball canon. You guys kept the fandom alive for so long between gt and super and the movies. Y’all created something beautiful. You all earned every subscriber, every like, ever single thing good that came from this show, you all earned it.
Hearing Lani go from an XL to a medium makes me think I can go down from an L back to medium. Needed that encouragement, thank you!
Piccolo screaming more than Vegeta isn't something that happens often, but it's a treat every time.

Scott loved this the way few people do, the way an artist loves making stuff even when they fuck up. Dude deserves to be proud, he earned his success

I overheard my brother scream "9 MINUTES 18 SECONDS" with his friends when the episode came out. Thank you for the 15 years of memories, content, and joy. To more years to come :)
I never thought of the fact that Yamcha screaming "MY BASEBALL CAREER" after the Cell Jr. breaks his arm is just to drive home the point of Gohan's Cowardice and lukewarm passion, that everyone except him is both fighting for the Earth and to protect what they love at the cost of losing everything.
Love the show ❤
I know people hate GT but I genuinely love when Mr Satan tries to confront Baby when he thinks Pan is dead. It shows how much he loves his family.
He's an underrated character and I love how you guys portrayed him.
I’m really glad the “Dodge” joke finally came full circle, but I kinda wish you saved it for when SSJ2 Gohan effortlessly weaved every punch Cell threw his way.
He finally learned how to DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODGE!!!
I think the thing with SSJ2 Gohan is more just the whole feeling of "Oh god, is this a good thing? A bad thing? Is this even Gohan anymore?" There wasn't really time for a bit of levity like what we had, especially cause you know Piccolo and his roommates would all be thinking that same thing about this being good or bad.
I sort of like the atmosphere it creates. The almighty dodge joke, and its capper is barely thrown out there as we get into what’s ACTUALLY important. Like, damn. That’s powerful.
I think it's better as it is, Piccolo is proud of his performance in his Super Saiyan state, whereas SSJ2 Gohan was something to be scared of even if he was your ally
_We're getting closer to hear Taka's rendition of "I did it My Way" as Cell with his glorious pipes...._
Everytime. Every. Single. Time. That music hits, Lawrence's Scream, this scene never ceases to bring tears to my eyes because you guys absolutely nailed it. I almost teared up when they did this. Nies' editing is phenomenal
1:20:21 It’s a look on Gohan that simply says, “The time for tears is over. Now it’s time for Cell to die” I love it.
It was pretty brave of Taka to admit his past troubles, and I'm proud of him being better than he was.
I have always felt that "We both know he never had a soul." is the best line in the entire show. The layers upon layers of comedy and cruelty that are present with that line are so awesome, I adore it.
It's one line where I genuinely felt honest hatred towards Cell, mostly before he was still a fun villain I would miss, but after this line... The moment I heard it all I could think of was "You deserve EVERYTHING that is coming to you."
@@AzraelSoulHunter It is also what contributed to the snapping of the final thread. Not just that 16 was now dead...but that he wasn't even going to get an afterlife, rebirth, resurrection...just...*nothing*. He technically did nothing wrong, and now he is absolutely and irrevocably *gone*.

I legitimately feel that this episode made me grow as a person. The choice words, "Evil triumphs as the good man watches" stuck to me to this day.
I presume you know that the line is a variation on the famous quote "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" (which often gets shortened to "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing."). But in case you, or someone reading, doesn't know the original... But yeah a good fucking line.
"when the darkness rises up, that is normal, it's when you reach down and drag it up that the noxious alarm rings.", pretty much sums up why gohan was so reluctant.

@thomaslinford6313 they inspired me to try be more engaging and involving with other party members in my dnd group and I based my character, Ripley Gentlestream, off of Beverly, in the sense that my half elf has lived a sheltered life spoilt and doesn't know of the dangers/ reality of war and bloodshed and its making pretty funny dialogue when we come across bandits etc as he'll make comments such as "this fake blood is so realistic! "I just wanted the moment to hit like it hit when we were younger "
Scott, trust me, it hit like a TRUCK. In the absolute best possible way, just amazing.
I've seen some folks complain about y'all's version of Android 16's final speech being too harsh, and I think what they forget is that it is necessarily cruel... but not inaccurate.
In the original scene, Gohan deliberately Does Not go all out against Perfect Cell BECAUSE he's scared of his own power. He knows he can unleash that power, knows how much he has, and knows how destructive it is... but when faced with the destruction of Earth and everyone he loves? He STILL does not let go. He tells Cell this in the original, and when Cell gets excited and is like 'ooh, how much damage do I need to I do to see THAT?' Gohan still panics and Does Not give his all to stop a monster who most certainly WILL kill everyone there. And while the situation leading up to Gohan fighting Cell is admittedly shitty, with Goku springing it on him last minute (seriously Goku, you couldn't prepare him for the possibility that 'we're training together bc I might not be enough. If that happens, and Cell takes me down/I'm not strong enough to stop him even with all of my strength? you will have to step in'? ugh) AND restoring Cell to full strength, it just proves the point further.
EVERYONE So far has fought until they were drained, fought to their absolute final limits to stop Cell. Tienshinhan used the Kikoho, a technique that in the series LITERALLY shaves his life down years at a time if used extensively, and used it continuously until he lost consciousness, Android 16 fought with his skull smashed open, Piccolo fought until he had a hole blasted through his chest and was thrown in the ocean to drown, both Krillin and Vegeta had their spines broken trying to stop Perfect Cell. Later, Android 16 is willing to sacrifice himself right before Gohan's eyes to stop Cell for good, gets blown to nothing more than a head for his trouble.
And Gohan STILL doesn't, go all out. In fact, he outright refuses to. In the OG show, he knows how powerful Cell is, knows that this is, without a doubt, someone who will murder everyone around him for shits and giggles, will destroy the planet without a second thought, and STILL REFUSES TO GIVE HIS ALL. THAT IS EXPLICITLY CANON. In the original, it's not until Android 16 as a head, tells Gohan that it's okay to fight to defend those you love, that words cannot reach everyone (tho I have to question WHY anyone would think Cell could be reasoned with, but I digress), that while he does not like to fight, it is because he cherishes life that he must protect it... and THEN gets destroyed for it, that Gohan finally snaps. It's not watching his family and friends get brutalized by the Cell Juniors, it's not Cell's very existence that pushes him to do his best. It's not even Goku's plan with the senzu bean and Cell that drives Gohan to fight with everything he's got (further proving that that plan was absolutely asinine from the start, if only because Goku, while loving his son, never truly understood him). It's the realization that he can no longer afford to be a coward. Gohan WAS putting his own fears and anxieties about himself above everyone else's lives by refusing to give it his all. He IS the strongest person there, and he hid his head in the sand, waiting for someone else to fix it - except no one there was powerful enough that they could do it for him (which mirrors TFS' realization in the time chamber when Gohan first turned Super Saiyan). With great power comes great responsibility.
If I'm completely honest though... I prefer the Abridged version of Android 16's speech, BECAUSE it strips away the gentler nature. Here is a character we have seen find the joy in the softer nature of life, grow to love and cherish others and step back from his intended purpose as a literal killing machine... and he tells Gohan he understands, but now is not the time to hold back. He can no longer afford to, bc all that will be left to him otherwise will be nothing but his failure to do anything to stop it, all the while knowing he had the power to do so. The original speech was from a machine made to kill stating that you do not lose your humanity when you fight for what's most important, and for those you love - that in fact, fighting to protect those you love is more human than anything else you can do - pleading for Gohan to let it go and give it his all. TFS' version was a sharp slap to the face because nothing else was getting through at a time when no one could afford to hold anything back anymore, including brutal, unflinching honesty that Gohan was a hypocrite, willing to let others suffer and die because he was afraid. I also like how they play it, as almost a defense mechanism in Gohan that needs to be snapped to access it - subconsciously, Gohan associates that anger, that raw strength, with tragedy and pain. When he first accessed it when he was 4, his father died right after; when he tapped into it against Nappa, Piccolo died; and when he tapped into it against the Ginyus, his spine was broken.
Honestly, if TFS ever decided to revise their earlier seasons to include some of the character stuff they let loose on in Season 3, it would be interesting to see if they touched on this aspect of Gohan's character. It could have made for a truly devastating gut punch if that was the case. Either way I love what we got here, and am very happy you guys took it more seriously at the end. The scale of growth you underwent making this series is a joy to watch.
31:20 Piccolo and Kami kind of fit into that fatherhood theme too. I know they’re not actually father and son. But still the elder (father) stepping down for his son to take over.
Kami is like an Uncle to Piccolo but not the fun uncle, the no nonsense uncle
I think its less father and son, and more accepting yourself for who you are, who you were, and what you have to do next.
The way you analyze Gohan’s outlook makes me think of Faramir’s line from Lord of the Rings: “I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”
As someone who was roughly Gohan's age the first time I saw the original episodes of this arc, and as someone who now has children roughly Gohan's age, it's SUCH a different feeling with the same end point.

"...And defecate on your... LUNCH?!"
I like to imagine that Gohan is struggling to come up with another horrific threat like "fornicate with your skull" when his insatiable Saiyan appetite kicks in he and he just gets distracted. He says "lunch" because he just realized he hasn't eaten in a few hours and now he's hungry. Biological imperative to eat overrides everything, even when he may be brutally murdered by Perfect Cell soon.

I cannot count how many times ive rewatched DBZA from start to finish including all the movies, everything DBZA produces has been constant gold, the comedy in hellsing especially was top tier. I will always be amazed at the work these guys accomplished
I feel like the scene is also exactly why dad gohan is divisive. They gave him the most emotional badass scene, proceeded to have him toy with one of the most popular villains, and then you just skip forwards fifteen years and he's not even sure he can remember how to go super saiyan in the first place.
It's just sounds like he's making excuses though. He's trying to come off weak as possible so people stop asking and expecting him to fight. He's done this since he was four. He only went crazy on namek due to grief and went with everyone when freeza showed up on earth when trunks showed up, because they were in a big group (safety in numbers). Plus vegeta and piccolo were there so the chances of him fighting directly were reduced. Despite the year, year and a half peace, namek hardened gohan and for awhile he was down and willing. I think goku throwing him in the deep end freaked him out and reverted him back to the 4 year old we met. He was afraid, now stressed, and being asked to do the finishing shot or else. It's why he tries so hard to back out, to not fight and make excuses why he shouldn't be here. Its why he's angry at goku too, for putting him on the spot and given no choice.
Anyone else want to see Masako do his own commentary of this masterpiece
