    Fantastic podcast; the meeting of Lore and mechanics is one the mystrey sauces of the best board games I think. In monopoly you are just moving hats and dogs around the board, but you really FEEL that you are getting property and investing and being a businessmen.
    Similarly in MtG you FEEL that you are in a wizard duel, or in X-wing you are commanding pilots in a dog fight.
    It's the same with good books and films - you want the audience to identify and sympathsise.
    It's probably why MMORPG's are so popular as you have a literal avatar that is 'you' and who you can customise and improve.

    The scenarios are the way you look at them. You could have viewed the difficulty of the last scenario is because you just didn't do as well in the previous. 2 less cultists and an extra turn goes along way. Also, if you sit and hold out until the final act hit just taking on the bad stuff pile there was actually a sure way to win. Side note: Murder at the Excelsior Hotel is a lot of fun, tons of endings, highly recomend.

    Last night I played this campaign solo. Had a close to perfect run through the first 2 scenarios. Walked into the ritual site with 5 turns to spare but had the psychosis weakness out. Agenda flipped and gave me the hypochondria weakness and then the encounter card did a damage to me which starts an infinite damage loop from my weaknesses. Game over man, game over.

    I actually just completed the third scenario last night using only cards from 2 core sets. My investigators were Roland and Agnes. I had 3 cultists spawn, and was fortunate to draw into a Dynamite blast. That killed one of them, and left the other two with 1 health each, so it was just a matter of running in and murdering them. What was more intense was how I beat it. I had one turn before Umordhoth spawned, and wasn't prepared to fight him. So, I had to use a Police Badge, investigate with a Deduction, and then flawlessly test three times to put clues on the agenda. Then, I had to evade an enemy with Agnes (that's what Blinding Light was good for), investigate, and make one more successful check. I dumped so many cards on that last test! And, I think I had to use a "Lucky!" to get the investigation. My hands were shaking at the end. A well-deserved retirement for both of them!

  • @anaphysik
    @anaphysik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    30:05 "These masks are our mark." What Lita means here is that the cult's masks are the investigators targets. "Mark" as in the same 'mark' that's in 'marksman', for example. The cultists can be identified by the masks the cult uses, and the gist of The Midnight Masks is that you're tracking down the masks, to use some synecdoche.
    Anyway, yes, I am now disappointed that Midnight Masks doesn't include a "just burn down Arkham" option, and now that I think about it, even MORE disappointed that The Devourer Below doesn't include a "just burn down the woods" option, which might have made it actually fun.

  • @phillosmaster393
    @phillosmaster393 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Yeah that last scenario is punishingly hard. To be honest you didn’t get to the really hard part yet. Steven is exactly right in pointing out that the core set player cards are built to deal with this sort of scenario. You have things like Elusive, Cunning Distraction, Dynamite Blast and Machete is just broken good and makes anyone who can take it a fighting machine. The core set assumes for the most part that you’ll be spamming clues and killing everything. It really punished the evade heavy play due to the volume of hunters and the shape of the maps. On top of that scenario 3 really stacked the deck with tons of tarpit enemies. Also Finn just gets wrecked by a ton of cards. He’s a real challenge. 1 willpower is a real handicap. Worse than a 1 in any other stat IMO.
    That all said yeah I got smashed the first time I did scenario 3, but then I came back and kept trying until I got better at it. I recognize not everyone wants to play that way. You see people post all the time on BGG or FFG’s forum on how they only play each scenario once for the story. I can see how this sort of experience would sour that sort of player.

    • @phillosmaster393
      @phillosmaster393 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don’t forget what the LOTR LCG core set scenarios were like as well. First one easy. Second one challenging. The third was punishing hard to seemingly impossible. So they were following their established formula. Give them one scenario to really chew on until the first cycle comes out. That last LOTR scenario was silly. You didn’t even start with all your heroes on the table. Talk about a disruptive mechanic right in the core set

    • @teamcovenant

      That third LotR scenario is like 20 podcast episodes about game design.

    Awesome video. Not only does Steve keep notes in a giant sketchbook but he is a spirit connoisseur!
    Your play-through has inspired me to purchase the Arkham core-set and some stand-alone scenarios.
    I'm curious if you guys are familiar with a game called Mage Wars Academy? If you like decision-relevant/heavy games that are easy to pick up (one turn cycle is literally all that's required), it may interest you. The 'gimmick' of the game is rather than having a randomized deck you draw from, your entire deck is kept in a small spellbook binder, giving you access to each card at all times.

    I remember buying this core set to play with sister and bring her into this game, with high hopes we gonna do all the sets together, since we are both fans of the other FFG games based on the Lovecraft lore. After second and into the third act she never wanted to play this game again. I ended playing solo from then on with a bitter taste in my mouth.

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That probably happens to many people. It's the crucible of "you'll either like this or you won't". The unfortunate thing is that Dunwich and Carcosa are super satisfying comparatively.

  • @MrRaposaum
    @MrRaposaum 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was solo-playing Agnes from Core and she had a survivor card (forgot its names) that is a +1 agility skill that makes you evade everyone engaged on you if you use it on an evade test and suceed.
    I played very bad the previous chapter so, like you guys, I had a lot of unique cultists spawn on the middle (on last part).
    So I went in the central woods, they all engaged to me, I evaded the easiest unique cultist (and even "defeated" the unique cultist that is added to victory when you evade her) and got to the ritual site with the third action.
    The thing about this game is that the bad consequences of one chapter carries to the next. It makes a LOT of sense with the Lovecraft mood, but yeah it can be staggering.
    So if you didn't defeated the Ghoul Priest on first part, it will probably spawn on second party (elite 5 health per investigator, hunter, hard to evade). He spawned ALONG with the masked hunter, so yeah... I only defeated ONE unique cultist on 2nd part before resigning. This means I miserably failed on 2nd part and made 3rd part almost impossible.
    I'm ok and agree with it getting the next part harder, but it snowballs way too hard.
    Can't say I didn't had fun playing it, though!

    It's interesting seeing how others took this. I don't remember how my first play through of this scenario went, but I'm sure we got wrecked quick. But I'm the camp that would have been endlessly amused by flipping the card to be moved on the main path. I find that a hilarious story. I guess I'm in a very small group though.

    To be honest, the surprise act flip on the last scenario of the core set was one of the reasons i fell in love with the game, for two things:
    1 - In cooperative games, i think the harder they are, the better. If the game is super easy it almost feels pointless to play since you'll always know the outcome in advance (It's one of the reasons i don't like Marvel Champions as much, till now it feels to me like "Vanilla Arkham", but it's still a cool and fine game)
    2 - The fact that they did this right out of the core box feels to me like sending a message: "NO OTHER GAME IN THE WORLD IS GOING TO DO THIS". It's the only game that keeps surprising us, every time in arkham you think you've seen it all, in the next scenario there is a totally new mechanic or surprise that catches you off guard. That's why every blind run of a new scenario is so amazing.
    Anyway it's just my opinion and i totally understand if other people felt differently :)

  • @lystic9392

    So I was playing this campaign solo, and in the third scenario got 4 of the cultists to spawn on the path just like you while I was on an Arkham Woods location where you cannot even be guaranteed to leave from... AND I lost all my cards except for 1 because of drawing my basic Weakness the turn when I wanted to go for it. (I took one whole turn just to prep.) Yet I still managed to get an OK ending, somehow. With (finally) a few excellent draws from the bag. ("Skids" extra action, managed to get to the Main Path, Parleyed one out, evaded the worst one, and barged through the other two to the Ritual Site tanking the two damage with Rita by my side. Too late to stop the ritual, but I still got a pretty fun ending. She did make me burn my house...)
    If you want to know my deck it was this one I made with 2 core sets and the 'taboo' list: arkhamdb.com/deck/view/760472
    It probably wasn't the best but it got me through. (Pickpocket turns out to be way harder than I expected to get going.) I had 7 xp from the first scenario and 3 from the second. But I think I made bad decisions with the xp. (I took Extra Ammunition instead of other weapons. There is a green economy card called Hot Streak that is a Must with "Skids" to be able to use his ability more frequently. I was real happy I took one of those.)
    I'm glad you confirmed my feelings that it was BLOODY HARD. And I was thinking long and careful about every single thing I did in the campaign and still barely managed to survive with a lot of beginner's luck. I had played the first scenario a couple times before I tried this campaign. In the second scenario I felt like I did everything wrong. I thought I'd have way more time, and I kept drawing more enemies that spawned on me essentially setting me back entire turns even with my ability to sometimes take an extra action. My whole idea was to build slowly in that scenario and that was not a good idea.
    That Screeching Byakhee thing you drew at the end I had never seen before and it was just the icing on the grave XD I wouldn't have been able to deal with that on top of everything else. My deck was pretty bad at dealing with high combat enemies.

    Playing true solo, I got wrecked twice in the final scenario due to doing poorly in the second scenario. It's super hard to collect those cultists as one investigator.
    First time through with a friend (me Skids, him Daisy) we wrecked face, caught all the cultists and stopped the ritual with plenty of time to spare.
    Then I played with my wife and it did not go well (me Roland, her Agnes). I lost my sanity about halfway through the last scenario leaving her to finish alone. But she did and it finished with R3.
    All in all, the intro campaign is hard. But I think you guys played too cautiously in second scenario today and didn't get enough cultists out early enough to capture them. Then it steamrolled you through the last scenario.
    And it didn't help that you lost track of the turn with Zach and missed out on his whole turn, thinking he already played it.
    Thanks again for the stream though. It is always fun to watch you two play and then talk the game over after it all.

He’s playing Skids and I’m Agnes, they spawn in, I go first and I have the perfect setup with Blinding Light and enough to pump it up to get it to proc...and then then chaos bag delivers a tentacle. While they all devour my character skids slips by and goes to the ritual site...

    I think what happened was your midnight masks round went so bad. You had a lot of Tentacle pulls and just fails from the chaos bag. Also, you guys really need to fight the guy that is the hunter cultist. But I understand you eventually couldn't because of all the creatures spawning on your head. Maybe your last ditch effort would be to get his victory point + he is a gone cultist. Definitely, like the idea of them spawning in exhausted.

    Have you guys even played Dark Souls? Saying that the game never kills you without notice or some bullshit out of nowhere is not the game I've played for sure. I love the games, don't get me wrong, but it is exactly the same as arkham in that comparison. As a new dark souls player, first blind playthrough losing your life savings of souls, because of something you couldn't have known, is just as bitter as being swarmed by cultists. Or being cursed in DS1 and not what to do! That was the point I almost quit the game. But I'm glad I didn't, because the dark soul series is amazing despite all its bullshit, just like Arkham
