It is amazing what these smart animals can do with their little paws, constantly feeling their way around with them, checking everything out. Really intelligent animals, yet comical too in a very positive way, they know how to live, they always seem happy!

+Aaron Ahearne Be glad they're not here in the UK... the Tories would either slaughter them like badgers or hunt them like foxes... wildlife has no chance of survival in the UK, we're building on our green land with homes, airports and railways and end up running them off their natural habitats, which harms their ability to mate. People in the UK are not good at dealing with wild animals coming into urban areas either, sadly... farmers are especially cruel and prone to extermination techniques, most being Tory capitalists... we've become a nation with a government that does nothing to help enhance conservation programmes needed due to the population growth and constant rise of immigration which threatens wildlife even more.

If you feed birds they might come if you put black sunflower seeds on the ground and nuts and water. That's how my raccoons found me. Then I gave them pizza.
my mother had exact same thing, (4+mom), patio door every night.. couldnt believe how friendly n behaved they are. almost better than pets but seen other side too, rough life for raccoon, its nice help them out

I have had raccoons come in my house when the door was open, and walk across the living room into the kitchen, climb on the countertop, and on to the refrigerator and eat the cat food that I put up there. The first time that I saw this, I was sure that it was not this animal's first in doing it. They and the possums always eat the left over cat food outside at night. At a friend's house, they are very tame begging at your feet for their favorite: marshmallows.
They go crazy over good cheese curls and peanuts but that gets expensive. As a steady diet I give mine cat food dry kibbles when they come and leave a small pool of water for them to play in.
I love these creatures. They are absolutely brilliant to look at them feeding on stuff. But, at the same time, I am scared listening to people say nasty things about their bites giving humans a bad case of rabies --> amputated limb/fingers and stuff!
Raccoons can carry several dangerous diseases including rabies. While incidents of rabid raccoons attacking humans are rare, it's not something you want to risk. Raccoons carry two other diseases, roundworm and leptospirosis, that can also be transmitted to humans and pets.
Bri you should study further. One fatal case of rabies passed from raccoons to humans has been known in history. I dealt very closely with raccoons for twenty five years and encountered no zoologic threats and since very integrated raccoons sneak kisses all the time the point was proven.
Yes, that’s true but you can vaccinate against canine and feline diseases; the lepto, parvo, distemper vaccines are commonly see for them in wildlife rehabilitation. Also there IS a rabies vaccine available for raccoons --not too terribly priced, your vet can order it in if you have a permit to keep a raccoon. I think Merial or Merck manufactures it, you can check on the Internet. Many states actually put out modified live rabies-vaccine at bait stations to keep the rabies problem down in raccoons and foxes.
I've had raccoon families visiting my house for a few years now. First, leave food for them. Then, let them get used to seeing you through the door. Then gradually sit yourself a few feet away while they're eating. Then hold food in your hand, and their natural curiosity will take over. Just move slowly, speak softly and be consistent. Eventually they'll crawl all over you! They can get nibbly though, so be careful about that. Oh, and they LOVE water; if you can get a large, relatively flat container to keep near the food, they'll drink it, swim in it, wash their food in it, or all 3!

Actually dog food is better than the cat food for them. They can develop metabolic disease from a steady diet of cat food. What is really interesting is that their favorite food is chicken-I’ve had them turn down beef or pork but they love chicken ( and frogs).
