100% Amen to that. I was gutted when I learned it was just a bunch of ports. They remade all of the games for the original All Stars, so they had no excuse for the 3D edition.
This is what I expected to see when it first came out. After seeing all the promotional artwork I was stoked to play it. But when I finally got the game, it was so different. Man, I still love the game....precious memories.
I just realized something. When I hear Charles Martinet's voice in modern Mario games, I always think he sounds a bit too high pitched comparing to what I always heard on Mario 64. But now that I listen this HD version with the sound uncompressed, I realize the voice is equally as high pitched as it is in modern games. It was obviously the N64 compression what always made me believe Mario's voice in Mario 64 was a bit lower than I hear now.
That's how I saw games in my childhood, it was the perception we had of quality, as time went by the games evolved and then you started to distinguish between quality.
I wonder if the decision to make it "only one star per level" was more of a conscious decision versus a hardware limitation issue. One star meaning you get a star and then you get booted back out to the painting. Having each level be only one star each, made the game feel significantly longer and frankly, more memorable.
probably hardware limitation, since some stages change its elements after a certain star is collected, and that wouldn't be possible to achieve back then
But the good thing, was like every other star was still available in the level (except the ones in which something special takes places, like the Koopa the Quick races). It felt amazing exploring the level and finding the stars, regardless of which one you were supposed to find according to the stage title. We didn't have something like that until Mario Odyssey, because iirc, in Super Mario Sunshine you can only find the shine you are entering into
A stage usually undergoes unique changes depending on which star you select to go after. Best example would be Dire Dire Docks where after you do the underwater swimming section and go into the giant harbor room, one star requires you to get on top of the submarine to collect the star, another star requires you to jump across poles and wallkick off fences up in the air above the water where the submarine would've been to collect red coins for another star.
Someone needs to make an "Ultimate 64" mod. 1 - Sticks to this R96 artstyle 2 - Blends and combines the content of Vanilla, R96, and DS together for a full package 3 - Creates a sense of finality and connectedness a la Banjo Kazooie a - All stars and star objectives are persistent and available from first entrance b - All major collectibles are present from first entrance and can be collected in one pass c - Threats and objectives remain destroyed/completed, even after re-entry.
This looks really weird... awesome... but weird. Weird because it's something my brain didn't expect while thinking about this game. It's like if you visit your childhood home after an incredibly long time and you see new stores and restaurants near your old neighborhood.
He was officially German, at first. That's why they grabbed a guy at the office who spoke some German to record his first round of voice lines that they used during the N64 era. "So ein mist!"

A bit odd how some levels received a major overhaul (Cool Cool Mountain, Jolly Roger Bay) but others just had texture upscaled. Seems like they either are still working on this or they ran out of steam by the time they were finished with the first batch of levels. Also the Pokeys look like a DS sprite and very different from the renders from 64, it really doesn’t fit. Same for the Eye enemies that are broken. Lastly the sharp edges of the original level geometry clash tremendously with the new models. This project might need a lot of work, which is a testament to the already impressive work the modders have done.
At 24:35, dude, seriously? 😂😂😂😂😂 You should've LED with that. Funny how you took the shortcut at the great risk of fall death and hitting the 15 second mark getting the "20 seconds or less" star reaching the end MUCH faster. You couldn't have done that on the first try? Seems like it would've saved you the trouble AND time LITERALLY 😂😂😂😂😂
I wish they remade Mario 64 from DS with this art for the Switch. Or the original 64 Game or give us an outfit in Odyssey that is 64 Concept Outfit that looks like this

it was probably to encourage the player to take a different route and get distracted via making them bored of doing the same route again
