    1. Read often, read widely, read challenging material
    2. Connect what you're reading with something you're already interested in
    2.5 Find a good spot for focused reading
    3. Preview chapter headings, table of contents, key words
    4. Skim, or pseudo-skim - read important paragraphs
    5. Take time to do something with what you read

    I've been reading books my whole life, but I prefer to read slowly, so that I can fully grasp the concept of what I'm reading. I feel that reading quickly often makes me miss important themes within the books I read.

    • @Jasonificatiation
      @Jasonificatiation 7 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Exactly. I miss enough reading slow! :D

    • @naptimegaming1347
      @naptimegaming1347 7 ปีที่แล้ว +112

      if you can read faster, then you can choose to read slower and enjoy the themes and all. for instance: I can read 1500 wpm, but if I want to slow down and enjoy and try to catch all the themes and things, then I slow down to 1200 wpm and it is the same fun slow time reading that mode people hit at 300 wpm.
      the book that I read that helped me the most is "how to remember everything that you read" by Evelyn Wood. it is about increasing comprehension and speed. if you want to increase "wisdom" then just slow down after you have all the information and meditate on what you just read.

    For me, Goodreads is just a way to track my reading, set reading goals (this year I want to read 75 books) and write rambling reviews of my favorite books. And my bookshelf is less a trophy stand and more a reminder of why I love reading- because it holds all my favourites.

      My brother reads faster than I do, I read far more than he does. I'm pretty sure the difference is in how we read: I apply a full voice to the words, with inflection, pause, etc. Pretty sure he just reads it as fast and monotone as possible.

  • @KarilynneDavies

    I have pretty severe dyslexia, so for me reading is something that I can do, but that I cannot do it very quickly or without at least some difficulty. While I often challenge myself to read text, I find that audio books allow me to enjoy a medium that would otherwise cause me frustration and anxiety. I am a university student, and have developed a system where I get all my textbooks as e-books, copy and past the text for each chapter into a text-to-speech program and convert them into audio files. Doing this allows me to not only keep up with class to class readings, but absorb and enjoy the textbook rather then dreading it and resenting myself for a disability that I was born with. I think its always important to try to improve your skills, especially in the things you find most difficult... but I think its also important to try different approaches and seek solutions outside of the box when the box wasn't designed for you

      @MrKaptinkrunch 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Kar. I have a horrible time paying attention to the books I read because of my ADD, I'm also in college and am looking for a good text to speech software, which one do you use?

    • @KarilynneDavies
      @KarilynneDavies 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Kaptin Krunch I use a program that you can get online called Natural Reader. Its trial is very usable - but if you can afford to buy it (or ask for it for a birthday or something) its is very worth it as you can save the files as MP3s and import them into an audiobook app on your phone like Smart AudioBook Player (which is also what I use). Its a good system - just make sure you time small breaks every half hour or so or your mind may wander while you listen. Good luck! :)

      Same here Kaptin Krunch re ADD. The video is very interesting in the sense that you see the milliseconds pile up and the information simply does not arrive fast enough to maintain concentration (sadly also true of my verbal conversations with regular-brained people :-) ) This is why I love youtube - it engages many senses and i can speed up the rate to match my ability to perform the cognition step.

    I really appreciated your final point. As someone who is naturally inclined to pride himself a tad too heavily on his intellect (which I'm sure plenty of other readers experience as well), that was a great reminder that knowledge and wisdom is about quality more than quantity. I can become impatient to expand the breadth of my knowledge, but am often reluctant to increase the depth of the knowledge I already have. I like your videos, rock on.

      +Thomas Frank i do the same too.. i prefer taking notes at the end of the chapter.
      also, a point to add is.. when making notes its always better to leave extra space here and there on some of your pages so when youre going through again or find further detailed information you have space to jot it down easily.
      Also, i am currently preparing for my masters entrance exam.. and there's some really difficult facts that i need to memorise. Also the course is boundless and humoungous. at the time when i am reading i can easily memorise but everything gets forgotten at a later date. can u help with how recollecting such difficult facts can be made easy?

    The idea of pre-reading is a very common and quintessential concept of good readers that is frequently taught to young children just learning how to read. Other techniques include visualizing the content, asking questions about the reading, trying to predict future information (be it what will happen or what is the most likely next topic for non fiction), correlating the reading with something you already know / like, relating the current reading with the last within the same book or topic, summarizing, and other such techniques.

    I have found over the course of my life that to get good at something you have to practice at its the same thing with reading. Some people only read for school which is fine but if its your goal to be able to read at a faster pace and to comprehend what you read you need to read more and invest more time reading other material aside from your required school reading can really help. Go to your local bookstore and start looking for things that interest you then choose a book to read throughout the semester you can have a handful or one to two which is fine I barely started to do this with a book I'm reading which is called "Mindset The New Psychology of Success" its a short read and very good so far. Reading different material you start to see a trend at reading speed and start to get to the conclusion that the more your able to read the faster and comprehension that you'll have I know its tough but I really think that this will make you a better student and person. And Thank you Thomas for the great videos!!!!

      Actually, Matthew has a point. If you have nah-ledge (spelt knawledge) you can read really fast, because you are not required to understand what you are reading. You don't have to pronounce correctly, or observe punctuation, nothing. You can head five books before breakfast, all you have to do is turn the pages as fast as you can. And most of all, you don't need to pay for any frikkin' speed-reading course or software and such. Tres bien.

    Awesome tips. I tried a speed reading program a while ago, and pretty much they advised the same message: 1) Read for ideas rather than just words; 2)skim when necessary; and 3)expose yourself to different material. Subvocalization is usually not the problem, typically it's regression. However, regression is easily solved with a pointer to keep your eyes moving forward, as our eyes naturally are attracted to motion.

    I am glad you mentioned the issue reading comprehension vs wisdom because in some careers the first one actually is counterproductive. For example I'm a mathematician and at the beginning I would read all my books and remember everything quite well, but in more advance courses this was frustrating because even though I knew definitions and theorems I didn't knew how to use them, abstract them or what their deeper meaning was about. That's when I understood, if you want to learn math you'll have to go slowly and deep into books and articles if you want to obtain real knowledge you can later on apply. So sometimes a 6 page article can take you a week to understand, and even more to dominate the subject it is about.
    Still, great video and thanks for doing what you do!

    Thanks for the end of this video! Im actually here because I spent a handful of hours reading just 25 pages of challenging text today (theoretical physics), and afterwards I assumed I took so long because I was a slow/bad reader 😑 now that I think about it, I was taking notes while reading and stopping after every paragraph or so and thinking about the content I just read. Thank you again! I tend to over-criticize myself so this was very reassuring :)

    Thomas, great content and presentation. I especially liked the part about comprehension not being the only measure to learning. Look for ways to apply that new information you just learned. Keep up the good work. You are absolutely correct, so much of the speed reading claims are over glorified skimming techniques.

    Great Video !! Personally I do pseudo skimming when needed but I`m generally a fast reader but I think its because of this I have issues with reading aloud. I am able to read fairly quickly and at the same time vocalize in my head a fast rate so comprehension rate is somewhat high. Now when it comes to reading aloud I find it uncomfortable that I now have to read at a slower rate and I personally find that comprehension decreases when I read slowly/ aloud. Does anyone have this issue ??. I rarely have to read aloud and I only noticed that I have this problem when I tried reading to children.

    In my experience the way to read faster is:
    - Be passionate about what you're reading
    - Be focused ONLY on what you're reading (meditation helps)
    If you're reading slowly don't blame yourself, maybe it's the book that is not catching your attention.

    Sometimes when i try to read i have a high expectation that as i read i start to become overwhelmed and thus causing me to become anxious. As it's progressing things become harder to understand and i end up wasting my valuable time getting not as much as i hoped i would.
    What helps me: First you have to set an honest goal that is first pure and righteous. (not from selfish ambition)
    And as you read you have to keep telling yourself to rest and to trust God in doing his work. There he'll establish your way towards your goals.
    There's nothing worse than being so ambitious about something but not being able to reach it.
    PS: This may not be the case for everyone. But it's important to note here that not to ignore what may be going on behind your brain that keeps you distracted all the time, thus bad reading.. And To search for your genuine intention in your goals. There you'll find peace in everything you do.
    And thus.. happiness. :))

    0:55 Markiplier, is that you? What are you doing here!? :D Great video, though. Moreover, another way to improve your reading speed, or so I heard, is to know your vocabulary - the better you know your prefixes, suffixes and etc. the less you'll have to stop reading to look in the thesaurus.

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheSeriousPL yep! Vocab is huge; I cut this from the script because it was running a bit long, but one good example is a book I was reading called Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. He uses so many words I've never encountered before (including a lot of computer and military terms) that it takes me forever to get through a page.

    • @TheSeriousPL
      @TheSeriousPL 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas Frank Not to mention taking up classics. Personally, as a foreign speaker, when I tried Wilde or Dickens, the reading became from recreational to a pain in the neck, trying to get the meaning of the vocabulary used. A word or two unknown are okay to get the idea, but half a page?! Also, good job on the video. Appreciated it that you give so much time and work to make the vids as interesting and educational as possible. Keep it up!

    ok I deleted my comment and I listened to your interview with the researcher. And I get it.
    But I still notice when I try to read way faster than normal my brain gets excited and more focused. But comprehension is sometimes difficult, but trainable I think. What do you think about that?

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, I've experienced the same thing - when I'm reading really quickly, I'll find myself very focused. However, at that point I'm just scanning the text - which does have its uses! Scanning isn't bad, it's just that it's not useful if you're reading for comprehension.
      Like this video mentions, you can indeed train yourself to read more quickly - with good comprehension - through practice. But that 200-400wpm limit still holds; very, very few individuals can surpass it while retaining good comprehension, and there's no evidence that you can train yourself to break through it.

    • @FDJustin

    • @thewhitelotus5521

      I have a very interesting problem. I talk really, really fast even to the point sometimes my words are all slurred together, yet I read very slowly (if I am retaining the information). But, then in text books my mind goes down that "mental rabbit hole" and I don't get much achieved. So, I think the strategies in this video are helpful to me. But, just curious, any ideas why I like to read at the fourth (if that) of the speed I like to talk? Any suggestions to combat that?

    • @WonkyOctopus
      @WonkyOctopus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds to me, based on the information presented in this video, like the you're not connecting what you read to subjects surrounding it that you find interesting. That's my take on it anyway. Try doing the thing Thomas mentioned about tying to build a link to between the reading material and things you find interesting and stimulating and maybe it'll help keep you from mentally straying? worth I shot I guess :) good luck!

    I loved the comment on your goodreads "read" list or your bookshelf. I, like you, enjoy the many forms books come in, and for some reason people look down on the fact that I keep very few physical books, though I do read in this format as well. To me, the knowledge I gain from the experience of reading is far more important than showing others how extensive my list of read books is. My job means I travel a lot, and with my husband also being a scientist and us both having the education requirements that this involves, we relocate frequently. Having to move the 100+ books I read annually simply wouldn't be possible, so I only keep physical copies of those I truly love and reread.
