I went from Quad S2 to Quad Z2 to Wharfedale Elysian 2 cause I love the ribbon tweeter sound. Both brands are owned by IAG. All 3 sound great for the price. And additionally I ended up buying the Quad S1 for my desktop setup. Great speakers and great sound.
Hello, I’m looking for a new desktop setup. I have a very nice high-current amp, and a REL T/5x subwoofer (so low end extension of the bookshelfs isn’t too important). Would you recommend the Quad S1? I would assume the S1 and S2 are similar? Thanks
I’m going for a less popular opinion here, although about the Z series rather than the S series. I had both the Z1 and the Z2 (those are still for sale) but I just couldn’t get along with any of them. The Z1s had a bright character (the tweeter seemed to be playing a bit louder than the woofer) and the Z2s a “gloomy” character. The balance on those was correct, but the mids lacked a lot of detail as the bass bled into the mids. Then we have the tweeter: yes, it’s amazingly detailed and nuanced but… it sounds thin, too thin for any kind of rock/cymbals. And it never blends with the woofer because the dispersion pattern is so different to that of the woofer. The ribbon tweeter reproduces the treble like a laser and you always feel the sound is coming from two separate drivers. And because ribbons don’t do low treble well (without a lot of distortion), it has to be crossed higher (at 3.4kHz), making the woofer work too hard, at a frequency prone to cone break up. I was a fan of their previous 12L model, but if the Z standmounts are anything to go by, I’d say this was a miss for Quad. They don’t seem very popular in Europe either and, in my case, I’ve had my Z2s for sale for 1 year now, in almost mint condition, still in warranty, at less than 50% RRP and no one wants them. I opted for ATC for my system but also enjoyed Rega’s speakers (RX-1, 3 or 5). Just my view; buy what makes your foot tap ;)
Great speakers, I owned a pair but when I moved I wanted to modify the exterior of them. They just didn't blend into the room correctly. Wish they offered more cabinet options.
I'm current using Quad Z1 and highly recommend it if you want a better S2. Also recommend taking out the port foam in the Z1 as it improves low end dramatically. Don't recommend Z2 as it wasn't as good sounding imo over Z1
By the way the reason Quad discontinued these speakers is exactly, because they give you much more performance for their preice!Even 2k speakers will struggle against this little monster in my opinion! That is why quad changed the line and it's called Revela 1 now costing x4 more! Yes it is a bit bigger speaker, but i doubt it is x4 better! ;)
Thank you Mr Tharbamar. I am from Singapore and really enjoying watching your videos, those speakers and systems you have testing are really impressive although I am yet to afford them. My system is really budget for me which cost me less than $1000 few years back. Marantz SR5013 with both Definitive Technology Mythos One and Argon 12 from used market. Diy Monoprice 12 awg speaker cable.
I know you love these, you've said so in various videos. They do indeed look very nice. I'd love to see your take on the Triangle Titus EZ which I have. This is also a 5 and a quarter inch woofer bookshelf, beautifully finished but with no real wood veneer. They sound incredible, however. Btw, interesting to see that for once these speakers are much cheaper in the UK than the US. They are £599 in the UK vs $1200 over there.
The design of the speaker looks similar to the Gallo CL2. The sound you describe describes the Gallo's very closely. If you can find a pair used, I would highly recommend picking them up.
They sound better than my S2 !!! I love Quad speakers, I have most of them, they are the best really, very very sweet and like you said engaging sound, no gimmicks, no loudness, just sweetness and accurate sound they reproduce. But i want to buy your setup please. What amp is it? is it SMSL A0200? tx
Thanks for the long term review. I'm super interested in how the Quad S2, CSS 1-TDX and the Philharmonics BMR compare with each other. Have you ever had a chance to listen to the BMR?
I owned both the quad S2 and the Roksan Tr5 Series 2 at the same time. I spent a good few weeks comparing them back to back trying to decide which pair I preferred. They sounded very similar to my ears, especially in the high frequencies. It was not night and day that's for sure. I found the roksans slightly smoother, not so forward and In the end the slightly bigger woofer and cabinet gave fuller sound. I moved the quads on and the fact that I got the roksans, absolutely mint, for just over half the price of a new pair of quad s2 influenced things also. I would not hesitate to buy another pair of s2/s1 room size dependant if I was looking for a smaller stand mount. Solid recommendation, fantastic speakers
Two questions please: (1) Are you familiar with the Soundartist LS35A, and if so would it or the S2 have a better mid range, and (2) would the S2 work well in a very large room so long as I sat approximately 8 to 10 feet from the speakers? Thanks.

Hi I want to tell you just because of your video I switched the b & w 606 to quad z1, your video is detailed and professional. But is there a chance that you will also test the z1?
One thing you seem forget to mention, how forgiving is this speakers handling less than poorer recording? One reason I'm still listening to Wharfedale Denton 80th is it's very engaging with great tonal balance and details for very wide range of music from old school soul to modern composition, it's pretty powerful even to handle orchestra music provided driven by right power amp. Btw I'm shock that the price charged for Quad S2 in Malaysia is twice as expensive.
@@Tharbamar Really Mate ,I thought the Wharfedale Evo 4.2 have a bigger cabinet and ribbon tweeters so better base and similar highs ... appreciate your views between these two speakers
Couple it with the couple of small subwoofers like the Wharfedale sw150 underrated $150 each a very good capable dynamic speaker. You should check out the Wharfedale sw150 subwoofer underloved nobody reviews it it has a Kevlar drive at the same 10 inch
I agree. I have had and used a Wharfedale SW150 10" sub for about 15 years. I think it is an excellent little sub for HiFi. Not just "for the money." It is musical and fast enough and subtle enough to do the job well. There are a few reviews buried around the internet that give the SW150 the credit it deserves. It turns any decent pair of small two ways into a full range setup. It and the Diamond 9.1s were (and are) far beyond their price category in their refinement.
How is the off axis performance ? Do you think it is a good speaker for relatively low to medium volume music that is playing in the background most of the day ? Especially compared with B&W?
Hi.. Thanks for the video. Im planning to buy Quad S2. Can a Single Ended Tube Amp drive these speakers or solid state like Marantz PM6007? Which suits good? Thanks
I am literally wanting to purchase these because of your reviews, but I didn't really find anything beside your reviews about it. I have small room around 20 m2. Would these be okay? Can you compare them to similiar priced floorspeakers? Maybe AE 109 or generally how they compare to do a floor standing speakers? Is there enough bass and puch?
I saw also your Polk R200 video, and there you also said it are the best bookshelf speakers for this price. What are, for you, the better spearkers, the Quad S2 or the Polk R200?
R200 is much better buy and sound for the money, I would like to remind you there is big difference in price that is why R200 as better buy and my most recommended speaker as of right now but it may change when I find better products in future. Also Timeline is big difference between these review videos. I had Quads since last year.
I live in the UK and paid £599 for these back in May '21 -- that's currently $872, by the way. I suppose the $1200 price tag is down to import duties (Quad is a British company) -- plus a mark-up for US dealers? Anyway, I was humming and hawing between these and the Acoustic Energy AE300's at around the same price, but watching and listening to your videos on them persuaded me to buy them, and I must say I haven't regretted it one bit. As you say, they are marvellous imaging devices -- almost holographic with well-recorded tracks -- very musical, and both voice and instrumental timbres are rendered superbly. The bass is no slouch either -- I personally don't use a subwoofer, as at volume it's already more than capable of disturbing the neighbours! They also sound very good at low volumes for late night listening -- you can still feel basslines thudding you in the chest when they play quietly; I know that might sound preposterous, but it's true. I used them originally with my Audiolab 6000A integrated amp, but now have supplemented that via its pre-out facility with an XTZ A2-300 class D power amp, which makes the quads sound even better. That's probably in no small part because of the high damping factor of the power amp. Thankfully, the sonic character of the 6000A is maintained. I'd like to thank you belatedly for your earlier reviews. Without them I might have settled for something else and missed out on what I think was an absolute bargain. You're probably right -- Quad could charge more, but thankfully I've dodged that possible bullet. I doubt I'll be changing the Quads any time soon; I couldn't justify at least twice the price (or even more) to better them, and, like you, can thoroughly recommend them. At least, people with $1200 to spend might consider giving them an audition.
Quad is Chinese owned now, but still designed in the UK. IAG owns them, just like: Audiolab, Wharfedale, Quad, Mission, Tag McLaren, and Castle Acoustics.
@@larsv6144 True enough. But for whatever reason, they seem to be sourced to the rest of the world from the UK, which is where one can most readily get them. I assume import duties apply from the UK rather than China. It would seem that if they were sourced everywhere from China, their price differential in different countries would be much less. The same sort of thing might apply in reverse where, say, US designs are manufactured in China but cost more in the UK. That's my guess, anyway.
Hi thanks for your demo I switched my 606 to Z1. I wanted to ask you the islands Z1 better what S2? And is the price difference equal to you? It's likely to make a comparison of the Z1 with the 706.
Hello. Do you have your speakers bi-wired? All these days I didn’t as I didn’t read too many favourable views about bi-wiring. But then looking at the Quad’s manual, they strongly suggested bi-wiring. Today I have bi-wired the speakers and have found that the sound has become ‘fatter’ but volume is a wee bit lower.
@@Tharbamar that is exactly what I have read too and hence had never biwired. But the Quad S2 manual official strongly recommends biwiring their speakers so I tried it. Thanks.

That’s the retail price in the UK. All UK manufacturers are cheaper in the UK. The Evo 4.2’s he mentioned are the same price. But you’re right, a bargain compared to other regions.
PMA-SX11 is better but price is $4250 more than DA9, the big difference is over all control and refinement and ability to drive them louder level without any distortion.

I listen to the Quads for 10hrs & then hook up the ls50’s for 1hr then hook the Quads back up for another week🤣🤣 When I had the Meta’s for 2 weeks, I hooked them up for 3 hrs , unplugged them, hooked up the Quad’s & while listening repacked the Meta’s🤣🤣 I keep the ls50’s close by on top of a layer of Meta material I designed as punishment 🥴 Joking aside, the ls50’s never Meta match they didn’t come in second.. Just kidding.. They do ok when pushed by power & quality gear, decent room treatment & the right tracks.. They will shine .. And they got Stereophile magazine’s top honors in the “A” list for over 5 years running until beat by the Meta.. Who pays who to vote😂😂 Why the Quads only got in the “B” lists is anyone guess.. Someone in the Meta Department at Kef must have voted twice😂😂
I've had every LS50 speakers including active speakers, they are very good speakers but for the money there’s better speakers out there, Stereophile Rating is base on who advertised the most, all about money.
I bought these a while back after you first reviewed them and I could not get them to work well for me. Midrange was nice as you described, but the ribbon tweeter was too "splashy" and fatiguing for me. Too bad because the build quality, fit and finish and looks are really nice. It was strange because I was expecting more warm/relaxed sound since it was designed by Peter Comeau, who also designed the Wharfedale Diamond 225 and Evo 4.1, which I also owned and liked. I even use the same amplifier as your previous reference (Denon PMA-2000IVR). I thought the original KEF LS50 was not even as bright. Oh well. I got a great deal on them and was able to sell them without a loss so no worries. 😃
Thanks for sharing, most of the time speaker cables and inter-connects are big factor in bright sound if you have neutral tone components, some people find it Quad S2 too warm in their systems, so it is all depending on set up and paring, thanks
I couldn't get on with these speakers, on my Hegel H120 they sounded so silibant and bright. I wanted to like them but in the end they really got on my nerves and gave me serious listening fatigue. Initially i thought they were a better speaker when i compared them with the Meta's because the Quads are more sensitive and play louder at lower volumes. But after a couple of weeks i found them unbearable and went back to the Meta's and to my ears the Meta's sounded so much nicer and relaxing to listen too. They play better at louder volumes with movies and have more tight punchy bass. Vocals are so clean and smooth with no exaggerated silibance to female voices.
The first impressions: These speakers are on the brighter side for sure! Me, my wife and our child agreed that high frequencies are crunked up more than usual but it doesnt mean they are harsh and fatigue. There were no sibilance! (true ribbon very good!). Tested with much inexpensive! but calm Amp! I asked my family once again what they remembered about them? I heard: too bright! I think these speakers require eq modification a bit to our taste!
@@russellparker4568 the H120 is a fantastic amplifier, check out the reviews you won't hear a single bad thing about it. It has plenty of power , deep bass and a smooth slightly warm top end. To be fair i didn't have a chance to try the Quads with different amplifiers but i highly doubt that the Hegel was to blame, Ribbon tweeters are known for being bright. I suggest you get a home trial on this amplifier as it's probably one of the best in its class and will comfortably drive most speakers with ease.
@@piotrk.7073 sound perception is very subjective, my ears are very sensitive to silibant sounds and these Quads definitely did this for me, The switch back to the Meta's made a big difference , tighter bass, cleaner and much smoother top end.

Correct me if I am wrong, the Z's use a completely different ribbon right?
Great speakers, I owned a pair but when I moved I wanted to modify the exterior of them. They just didn't blend into the room correctly. Wish they offered more cabinet options.
I’ve spent some ridiculous money on speakers and I’ve just bought the Quad S2’s and they are truly amazing for the price ….WOW
I'm current using Quad Z1 and highly recommend it if you want a better S2. Also recommend taking out the port foam in the Z1 as it improves low end dramatically. Don't recommend Z2 as it wasn't as good sounding imo over Z1
Out of interest what do the Z1’s do better than the S2’s?
By the way the reason Quad discontinued these speakers is exactly, because they give you much more performance for their preice!Even 2k speakers will struggle against this little monster in my opinion! That is why quad changed the line and it's called Revela 1 now costing x4 more! Yes it is a bit bigger speaker, but i doubt it is x4 better! ;)
sitting here with my wharfedale Evo 4.2s wishing u mentioned these earlier 🙃🙃🙃. i still do enjoy them though
You’re most welcome, thanks for sharing.
Great long term review and I can see that you are very passionate about the subject. Thank you!!!
Thanks for watching.
Thanks to to your review I bought Quad S2. You were 100% right, these are amazing! Much better than Totem Arro (which I have too). Thank you!!
Great to hear!
Best audio "Quad S"....harga juga masuk akal...❤
Very Impressive, I think this one of the best so far I listen to. Was joy to listen
Thanks for sharing.
You have me very interested with these speakers.
Thanks for the review. I want to ask if you listened the Cabasse Murano Alto speakers or if are you planning a future review of them. Thank you !
Great follow up review. Also considering MA Silver 50 7G and wondering how different in overall sounds if it pair with a 10" sub. Thank you
Can't believe there's no subwoofer. They sound great.
Add a REL T/7i subwoofer and it will take the S2 to an even better level. I tried it.
Thanks for a great follow up review !😀
Anybody heard these with a Roksan K3? Currently got Dali Oberon 5's but kind of love these.
Great review. Is there a chance that you will review their larger sibling like s4? somehow there is almost no serious review in the network.
They are going to send me samples earlier this year but never heard back from them.
@@Tharbamar thanks !
Hi, I recently watch British Audiophiles review of Quad Revela speakers. Hope you can review.
Two questions please: (1) Are you familiar with the Soundartist LS35A, and if so would it or the S2 have a better mid range, and (2) would the S2 work well in a very large room so long as I sat approximately 8 to 10 feet from the speakers? Thanks.
Hi, I’m not familiar with sound artist speakers, Quad S2 was great they are not for bigger rooms.
Now I have much better speaker, thanks

Hi Tharbamar, how do you compare Quad S2 to Elac Uni-Fi Reference bookshelf thanks you very much.
Quad S2 is a bit forward sound and highs are airier compared to UBR62, they both can produce very god stereo image with right set up, thanks

Great review! In your opinion how does it compares with Dynaudio Evoke 10 and ByW 607 S2AE ??? Thanks
Quad S2 has better balance than both for accurate sound and musicality, thanks
Look like they have more bass depth then the klipsch RP500 M2.
Hi Tharbamar, thanks for great review.. do you found this ribbon tweeter a bit shouty at top end? I mean if compare to soft dome tweeter.
Mostly ok in my system but it can happen time to time with some recording.
Great review, they are beautiful.👍
Hardly anything on the internet about them other than your reviews.
I have upp’ed to YT a few music Demo’s of the Quads👍
Absolutly love the sound. What the size of the room do they fit in?
Hi. Thanks for the great review. Do you know how they compare with KEF K-3 Meta?
Sorry it’s distant memories and I no longer have them.
@@Tharbamar , sorry, I meant Quad S-2 in comparison with KEF R3 Meta and KEF Q Concerto Meta. Maybe there are something better you can suggest? I appreciate any hints in that regard what is best in youe experience.

hello, I follow you with great excitement every time and I seriously like your posts.. I would like to ask curiously; Do you plan to include Yamaha Ns-b 951 in your next posts? I thank you in advance and give my love...
Hi, I have no plans for Yamaha speaker at this time, thank you.
the smaller woofer would be better for mid range.
Great review!! i was just wondering which sub do you use for music? I heard REL is great, also SVS is pretty good too.
I have a few different subs, mainly I use Martin Logan Abyss, Thanks
Hi I want to tell you just because of your video I switched the b & w 606 to quad z1, your video is detailed and professional. But is there a chance that you will also test the z1?
No plans for Z1 for now, thanks for sharing.
Twice? that's high.
@@Tharbamar Ya almost as expensive as ProAc Tablette 10/Dynaudio Evoke 10/Acoustic Energy AE500
Great review! So, would you take these over Wharfdale Evo 4.2? They are basically the same price at this point.
Yes definitely.
@@Tharbamar Really Mate ,I thought the Wharfedale Evo 4.2 have a bigger cabinet and ribbon tweeters so better base and similar highs ... appreciate your views between these two speakers
@@Tharbamar how about vs Elac UniFi reference?
Yes, I tried the Evo 4.2, but the S2 are better. S2 has way better bass and bass control, unless you like boomy bass.
@@larsv6144 Glad to know , Thanks
Can you review the Magnat Transpuls 1500? Another great review.
I’m not sure if I can get samples.
Couple it with the couple of small subwoofers like the Wharfedale sw150 underrated $150 each a very good capable dynamic speaker.
You should check out the Wharfedale sw150 subwoofer underloved nobody reviews it it has a Kevlar drive at the same 10 inch
Thanks for sharing John.
Yes definitely they can serve you anyway you want them to be.
I have a small living room and my seating is 7 - 7.5 feet away. Do you think these will be suitable for that distance and also match with Rega Elex R?
It should be fine but it may a little brighter if the walls are too close, thanks
Best bookshelf speaker ever
Are these still made?
Im Never be able to find some online in Germany. Some forums say, only used market.
Hi.. Thanks for the video. Im planning to buy Quad S2. Can a Single Ended Tube Amp drive these speakers or solid state like Marantz PM6007? Which suits good? Thanks
It will sound incredible with tube amp, thanks
I am literally wanting to purchase these because of your reviews, but I didn't really find anything beside your reviews about it. I have small room around 20 m2. Would these be okay? Can you compare them to similiar priced floorspeakers? Maybe AE 109 or generally how they compare to do a floor standing speakers? Is there enough bass and puch?
AE is not available in U.S., thanks
I saw also your Polk R200 video, and there you also said it are the best bookshelf speakers for this price.
What are, for you, the better spearkers, the Quad S2 or the Polk R200?
R200 is much better buy and sound for the money, I would like to remind you there is big difference in price that is why R200 as better buy and my most recommended speaker as of right now but it may change when I find better products in future.
Also Timeline is big difference between these review videos. I had Quads since last year.
@@Tharbamar and when I can buy the Quad S2 secondhand for € 750,-, then still the Polk R200 better?
Hello Japan from Georgia.Nice channel.
Also have Xtz a2 300 and have just ordered the quads. Looking forward to it !
Hi thanks for your demo I switched my 606 to Z1. I wanted to ask you the islands Z1 better what S2? And is the price difference equal to you? It's likely to make a comparison of the Z1 with the 706.
Yes Z1 should be better than S2 but I haven’t tested in my system.

Is there a chance you will test it on your system?
Hi, never bi-wired my speakers, there’s no benefits. Only bi-amping can be beneficial. Thanks
@@Tharbamar that is exactly what I have read too and hence had never biwired. But the Quad S2 manual official strongly recommends biwiring their speakers so I tried it. Thanks.
Do you think these would work in a nearfield desktop environment? Looking for an upgrade for my office setup, would be quite close to the rear wall. Thanks

My icon " Ascent Acoustics Sierra 2 ex " the best ...
You have drive quad S2 in two different amps I. E your Denon and SMSL 9. Can you tell me which amp is better for this speaker as per your test?
PMA-SX11 is better but price is $4250 more than DA9, the big difference is over all control and refinement and ability to drive them louder level without any distortion.
ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါသည်: S2 is arrived and test with my local amp. In campare with elac b 6.2 audio is more clear, but less sepaeration/3d, also a big difference in low signal.
Dear, how much time is reqd to complete Speaker burn in, I have used for about 11 days 2/3 hrs/day?
Dear Tharmabar, I have used my quad S2 for more than 50 hrs but I can't hear the improvement. As of now I can't hear the difference of elac B6. 2. Audio is dry no 3d, no sepration, no fleshy, half of the low high signal is not heard.
My system : (1) TPA 3255 based class D amp, (2) LM3886 based Class A/B amp, And MQM 3089 based DAC.
I hate reviews like this. I have a set of AE Active 1's, but now my curiosity is on fire.
How forgiving are the Quads with todays recordings, or do they only shine on excellent recordings?
How does it compare to brx?
Love this speaker, traded in my B&W606s2. Buuuuuuut I am wondering about the Ascend acoustics Sierra 2. I see you mentioned the Sierra 2... but have you heard them? The Sierra 2 are getting very high review... very tempted to do a side by side. Ascend is only 1000/pr. Ascend have larger woofer 6in, more bass down to 41Hz.
current model is Sierra 2EX, I did review Sierra 2 speaker a few years back here, www.tharbamar.com/single-post/2016/11/21/ascend-acoustics-sierra-2-bookshelf-speaker-review

I did comparisons with many speakers if you check in my channel or even simple google search will show all the comparisons I made, thanks
Even my MacBook Air can show the quality !!
Thanks for sharing, most of the time speaker cables and inter-connects are big factor in bright sound if you have neutral tone components, some people find it Quad S2 too warm in their systems, so it is all depending on set up and paring, thanks
compare with evo 4.2?
It’s been done, please check in my channel.
I’m glad you have mentioned the h120 not sounding like a good pairing. Been considering that amp so I know to avoid 👍🏻
@@russellparker4568 the H120 is a fantastic amplifier, check out the reviews you won't hear a single bad thing about it.
It has plenty of power , deep bass and a smooth slightly warm top end.
To be fair i didn't have a chance to try the Quads with different amplifiers but i highly doubt that the Hegel was to blame,
Ribbon tweeters are known for being bright.
I suggest you get a home trial on this amplifier as it's probably one of the best in its class and will comfortably drive most speakers with ease.
@@piotrk.7073 sound perception is very subjective, my ears are very sensitive to silibant sounds and these Quads definitely did this for me,
The switch back to the Meta's made a big difference , tighter bass, cleaner and much smoother top end.
@@hclandscapes I know it. I understand it. I am sensitive person too so I decided to send them back and wait and try another one. Maybe your pairing components make a difirence but I don't think so heh (Hegel is top notch quality..). One thing is sure there are better balanced (I mean less flashy) speakers on the market and I'm thinking why @Tharbamar doesnt raise that aspect in review...maybe perception and hearing are changing after some time and we need more forward and bright, sharp sound...
