YoNanas - A review of the Healthy Banana-based Ice Cream Machine

  • I'm in the kitchen making 'ice-cream' out of bananas with the Yonanas.
    The YoNanas is available from a number of stores including Costco in the UK, and available on Amazon UK: amzn.to/1fCKDtR
    or Amazon US: amzn.to/1CB5Iik
    RE comments about letting the bananas defrost a bit first.... I mentioned this in the video.

    Re my lack of a sense of taste - this sometimes intrigues people, so I'll elaborate.
    It's really Anosmia, which is a total lack of a sense of smell - but it also affects my taste as I now can only get the sensations from my tongue, it signals whether a food is sweet, sour, salty or spicy, but without any distinct flavour as this is 85% olfactory. It came on gradually a few years ago and now I can't smell anything or taste whether the food I'm eating is beef, or fish etc. A cure is very unlikely.

    For everyone wanting to know more about my lack of a sense of taste....it's not really relevant to this video but for some reason the condition seems to really interest people...the scientific information about it is in the very first comment I posted under this video....but the short(er) answer is that it just faded away and won't be coming back. So enjoy trying different foods while you can because sometimes these things can just happen.

      Still a shame though.
      I had a mate who lost his taste/smell after a mountain bike accident. Didn't tell his GF for years. Always lied and said her cooking was lovely. Then she guessed and poured a ton of salt into his food just to check. Busted!

Delicious! 🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦 Of course, you have to let the fruits rest for 20 to 30 minutes on the counter, before you make the ice cream!!! No fruit got stuck in my appliance. Don't know why, yours did!

    I had great difficulty getting this YoNanas dashcam attached to my car windshield and finding the appropriate power adapter. After several bottles of superglue, a roll of duct tape and several meters of supportive rope I finally managed to install the YoNanas in place. Despite several hours of rigging I never managed to get any test footage and instead ended up with bits of frozen fruit all over my gear shifter. Final rating: 2/10 at least my hand is cooler when shifting but its gross and sticky.

That one could ingest something bad without knowing it, thus the purpose for the sense of taste. Good thing to be married! "Hey try this, how is it dear? Bleargh! Ah, alright, what else we got?" The only good trade off would be that one wouldn't be bothered if someone broke wind, or had B.O...

      Now scientists say if the illness is not inborn/tied to brain damage, then it can be healed with the use of prednisone or with the use of even more modern treatments such as gene therapy. So while Cuberus probably can not recover his/her sense of taste, Techmoan could, even though it is not easy.

    A much more robust, easier-to-clean take on the same mechanism, though very pricey, is a Champion juicer with the blank/puree-ing plate over the opening where the juice would come out and a bowl or cone below the pulp spout.
    That thing will turn bananas into soft serve with ease (it's advertised as being suitable for making nut butter and has a coffee grinder attachment), easy to scrape the extra banana out of, my mother's lasted for two decades of active use, and, in hindsight, we could have easily ordered replacement parts rather than throwing it out.
    (But, hey, it was the early 2000s and "check the company's website" wasn't a habit then.)

  • @ElizabethBrodkorb
    @ElizabethBrodkorb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I have one of these and I love it! It doesn't "waste" the first banana. It is still in the machine. Just scrape it out when you are done putting in your fruit. You have to take it apart to clean it anyway. Might as well not waste the fruit. Another tip, mix up fruit before you put it in the machine (banana, strawberry, mango, banana, strawberry,...) instead of putting all the fruit of one type in at once. This will allow the fruit to mix up in the machine and come out already blended together. Also, you don't need to use bananas. I think Dole wants you to because they are a banana company but It works just fine without bananas too.

    • @JVerschueren
      @JVerschueren 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where I live (Belgium) Dole doesn't really sell fresh fruit apart from, maybe, oranges. They are quite big in terms of canned fruits in syrup, though.

    I have a machine like that, the ice cream doesn't come out that "creamy". If the fruit is very frozen like ice, the ice cream comes out as if the fruit were "crushed ice". But I discovered a trick to make the ice cream creamier: I cut the fruit into small pieces and don't let it freeze completely. I freeze it only half-frozen, and it's still a little malleable, and I mix natural yogurt, to make it more "creamy".

    What I'm wondering is since you don't have a sense of taste or smell, does that make some of your other senses sharper? That would be handy considering a large chunk of your videos are audio and video equipment.

    it would help if you followed the instructions
    you leave the bananas to defrost for 10-15 minutes and the bananas you freeze should be spotted, being slightly overripe
    I followed those steps and it worked really well

    Update on Yonanas!
    Today I decided to try something different and that is to break up some peppermint candy, some butterscotch candy and some of these mints you get when you leave the restaurant.
    I didn’t mix them all together. What I did is take about 10 peppermint balls, put them in a zip lock bag, get a wooden rolling pin and crush them up.
    I did the same with the butterscotch and the after dinner mints.
    I have to admit the peppermint was GREAT!
    I put ½ banana in the Yonanas followed by a teaspoon of the peppermint followed by another ½ banana.
    It tasted like peppermint ice cream! As one person said “Taste like Christmas”!
    I also ran some of the peanut butter logs through. They didn’t need breaking up as they were not hard. It was like eating peanut butter ice cream. This was an interesting taste sensation.

  • @scottbrady7499

    bit of a magic trick: one banana is sacrificed to "prime" it before anything starts to come out. couldn't a big cuisinart chop the hell out of fruit chunks? then, wipe on a cookie sheet, freeze and eat cold. who needs this weird thing, the potatoe-go-round that shoots potatoe spooge all over, as it bounces around was more of adventure in culinary procedure!

  • @williamgottlieb8723
    @williamgottlieb8723 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It would be much more effective and a whole lot easier to use a potato masher. Not an electric mixer, just the old handle with a metal grate pattern on the end.
