    The word "ascot" means any cravat in America, not a particular type as in England. They are interchangeable words in American vocabulary. Cravats are worn mainly by military organisations in America.

    In 1660, King Charles II introduced the cravat to England, sparking a long term love affair with the neck cloth among English nobility. Throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, English gentlemen wore cravats of the finest silk or lace. In modern England, the ascot is a form of silk cravat worn only at formal occasions.

      Mr. Novotny, I'm sorry to say but cravat (a la Croat) was and is part of Croatian men's clothing, especially when going to war.

    • @PatrickNovotny
      @PatrickNovotny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ktarnik Don't be sorry. You are absolutely correct Sir that the cravat originated from Crotia and thus the French and English thought it was so dam sexy they started wearing it.

    Cravat History. In 210 B.C., The mighty first emperor of China, Shih Huang Ti, was buried with an army of terra-cotta clay soldiers, all wearing neck cloths. It is believed that his advisers convinced him to have the 7,500 life-size clay soldiers buried with him instead of actually having his entire army killed and buried with him. The neck cloths represent the prestige and honour the clay soldiers had in guarding their emperor through eternity.

    Nice video Patrick. Thank you,
    I am thinking of using the ascot for some different (and perhaps more casaul), elegance than wearing the ever present tie this summer, and i am sure this video will come in handy.
    Ps. Are acots typically made in silk, and ca. which length should one normally look for as a standard. And are there any brands which are particularly famous for their quality ?
    Once again thanks for the advice! :)
    Claus

    • @PatrickNovotny
      @PatrickNovotny  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome LexLuthor1234 . Yes, made of silk. You might find a pre-tied version that has velcro or some other shenanigans, but it's best to stick with silk. They look the best. Ascots are still hard to find at a regular store. I like CravatClub, but they are pricey. I'm planning to add Ascots to my online store in the near future at much more reasonable pricing and keeping the quality. Thanks for the great question.

      it's unusual, yes, but no one wears ties anymore in the professions except for important meetings. Shame. I haven't the guts/ability for a bow tie, so this is a compromise. I'll wear it anyday I fancy and for important meetings. I think cravats are going to make a comeback

    • @PatrickNovotny
      @PatrickNovotny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gordon Gopher I most certainly commend you on wearing the ascot... The bow tie may require may require more confidence, but if find the bow tie easier to wear then the ascot. I look forward to the comeback of the cravat.

    • @gordongopher4894

  • @thewesleys11
    @thewesleys11 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    The ascot tie goes really well with jeans or just semi causal outfit like with a blazer or vest as u have in the video. Im wondering if i can tie a silk scarf into this.

    • @PatrickNovotny
      @PatrickNovotny  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't worn with jeans yet, but I'm willing to give it a try. I just have to pick the right occasion. You definitely can use a silk scarf. You probably want something similar to a cravat that would be about 4 inches wide and about 60+/- inches long. As for a scraf, there might be a lot of extra material and will change the look you might be going for. Give it a try and let me know how it goes. I'm sure it will be noticed. Thanks for the great question and take care.

    Hello Mr. Novotny,
    Thank you for the lesson. When I was a kid, I used to watch a show called the Wild Wild West with Robert Conrad. He wore a Cravat with a vest, however his was under the collar and outside the shirt. It still looked good, though. Any thoughts on that look?
    By the way, you look great.

    • @PatrickNovotny
      @PatrickNovotny  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure MrRtzenx and thanks for watching. I've never seen the show, but I can assume that he is wearing a scarf or long bandana type thing. I guess if I was riding a horse in the desert heat then I wouldn't mind a bandana or scarf around my neck to wipe away the sweat. I guess it all depends on the occasion, but it sounds like a very casual look. BTW I try to clean up before the camera is turned on :) Take care my friend.

    I recently saw Will Smith wear a loose ascot and became intrigued by it. Any tips on color choices, patterns, things of that nature when you pair it with a shirt?

      I would treat the same rules of thumb as wearing a necktie when it comes to mixing and matching patterns etc. Hopefully this info graphic helps. Thanks for watching. www.pinterest.com/pin/120963939965422563/

    helpful video, thanks. One question, is it good for any night event or ascot is for the day event only ??

    • @PatrickNovotny
      @PatrickNovotny  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zahidur Rahman Yes, it is traditionally worn for day time formal events only. I could see an event that started during the day and carried into the evening as being a good option to wear an ascot. I suppose it all depends on the event and the crowd attending. Most people will not be aware of this rule so if you really wanted to, you could give it a try. What type of event are you planning on attending?

      Patrick Novotny Mainly for wedding or may be some kind of celebration party. In my country (Bangladesh), most of event take place in the evening and its hot weather here. i can try may be in winter time. But thanks any way for the reply my friend, really appreciate it.

      Zahidur Rahman Unless you are in the wedding party and all the groomsmen are wearing ascots I would refrain from wearing during the evening and maybe go with a sexy bow tie with a vest. Have a great time.

    Of course, what you show here is a day cravat and not an ascot at all. Ascots are formal accessories worn with morning dress, the dress required for the Royal Enclosure at Ascot. They'd turn you away at Ascot if you were wearing a day cravat as in the video!

    Hey Patrick is their a night knot as well? If so can you make a vid.

    • @PatrickNovotny

      There isn't a night knot. A day knot is worn with a formal morning suit. I'm working on other cravat/ascot knots as we speak. Videos coming soon.

    What type of silk is this tie made from?

    • @PatrickNovotny
      @PatrickNovotny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rachael mcilhagga I don't know what species of silk worms this silk comes form, but I can tell you that it is a printed pattern on silk which I found to be less susceptible to wear as apposed to jacquard woven patterns. I hope that helps answer your question and thank you for watching.

      Lo P The one I'm wearing is from the U.K. It's about the same length as most of my neckties 58-62 inches. Try sending them back for longer ones if you still can.

      +FRANKLYN CAMPUSANO An Ascot is a specific type of cravat such as I am wearing in the video which also can be worn over the collar in my other video on how to tie an Ascot Ruche knot, aka Scrunchie knot. You might be referring to a traditional cravat worn by Croatian soldier which essentially is a Silk scarf tied around the neck or the adaptation from the English and French some hundreds of years ago which would be referred to today as a stock. That's about the most brief I can be without writing a book about it. I hope that helps and thanks for the great question Sir. check out Wikipedia for more details and historical references.

      smartass11225 Correct. Ascots are traditionally worn as formal day wear.

    • @lukesargent7551
      @lukesargent7551 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Novotny Are you not allowed to wear an Ascot tied in a scrunch manner formally so it looks more like a regular tie? I get it that you can't wear an Ascott tied in the usual day fashion formally... but isn't the other way acceptable?
      Oh - I think I see what you mean. Only for formal day occasions. I guess it's bow tie all the way for evenings.

    • @PatrickNovotny
      @PatrickNovotny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luke Sargent I think your right about the Bow Tie. Formal evening wear is appropriate when you have formal invitation to a black tie event and not like a movie premiere in Hollywood were celebrities wear anything they choose, but for the rest of us a Black Tie event is a Tuxedo and Black Bow Tie only for men, evening gowns or cocktail dresses for women. Formal Day wear has been modified by the wedding industry to don formal evening wear during the day and allow for brides to choose whatever they desire as long as they are paying. Am I right?
      It is normally acceptable to wear Ascot for formal day events in either manner.
      Thank you for the great question.
      Patrick
