  • What's up everybody!
    This is a DIY how-to on installing a spare tire on a 1993-1997 Ford Ranger. Sorry I couldn't talk for a majority of the video lol.
    This video is more geared towards installing a spare tire in a Ranger that the spare is missing, but also intended to show how the setup works and how to remove.
    *DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a Master Tech/Mechanic, just a long time wrencher.
    Truck in video is a 1997 Ranger 2WD 2.3L 4 cylinder.

    My brother bought a Ranger auction that was missing the spare, all the hardware for the carrier, and the owner's manual, so we'd been wondering specifically what's missing and how it's intended to be used. My Explorer from the same era has the winch-style carrier so I really wasn't familiar with this type. This video was very thorough and a great help; thank you!

    I'm a stone's throw away from Lake Erie, if I get a flat I'm either on the interstate I90 or I'm on some two lane road in the snow. You definitely want that spare to come out QUICK! Coat the hell out of any hinge points with plenty of anti-seize!!
    Got the same set-up in my 94 XLT Ranger, gotta fix it! I'm the 'family on-call emergency mechanic' so my toolbox has to be ready to roll at any minute!!

    Wrap your spare in a contractors garbage bag before installing it. We have to protect them from the salt up north, but all road debris is harmful. Tear open a spot to get to the air valve.
    Oil and grease all those pivot points! Be sure your spare has an air cap to keep the valve clean! You are so smart to add a usable spare to your vehicle. Grease up your jack too!

    I'm back. My fix for the missing hardware on the spare tire carrier will be to use an eyebolt like the factory specs show; if I can find one with the correct threads to fit the original threaded welded nut.Or I may do the fix as you outlined. As for the end of the pivot arm I chose a different route than you did. I removed the body clip used for mating with the tightening bolt. I then used a bolt, washer, and lock washer to come from the back of the pivot arm effectively creating a 'Threaded Stud ' for the arm. The swing bracket swings far enough away that it is no problem putting it onto the 'stud' and then using nut, washer, and lock washer to hold everything tight. Putting the needed tools for the removal of the tire from the carrier behind the jump seat along with the jack is no problem. Went 6 years without a spare and feel much better about it now. Oh, one more thing. My P215/70R14 tire-rim did NOT fit on the rim hole center post very well either but it did fit better than what you showed in the video. Without that Eyeboltset-up it seems to me the tire could work its way out and cause problems if on a bumpy road and then hitting the interstate. Ford shoulda come up with a better retaining system.

    Hopefully the wing nut can't get bumped, That would cause threads or bent problems.
    But I have gotten a lot of help from watching the fine video ,

    Thanks for taking the time to post this as it is helping me out.working on this problem now with my 1997 xlt ranger. got the truck used and there was no spare tire in the carrier. the swing arm retaining bolt is missing and the eyebolt setup is missing as well. junk yard trip yielded a rim and mounted tire. [ yeah, i didn't inspect the spare tire carrier before going to the junk yard or i would have known ahead of time what to look for while there. ] The aluminum wheel matches what i have so ' Score'..... 27$. Since I am still working on the solution I am wondering if a truck bed Torx T55 bolt will work in the swing arm. only considering that for anti theft security as someone that wants to steal it would have to have a t55 torx with them. I'll have a tire changing tool kit inside the truck once I have the tools list that would be needed. I'm going to try the 6" X 3/8" Eyebolt setup you showed but using a lockwasher with a locknut combo. Will just have to carry a deep well socket. Thanks again

      Alpha Omega thanks for the reply! I’m glad it’s helped you. Sounds like you got it all planned out though! Locking nut wouldn’t be a bad idea, just make sure you keep that socket on you! Let me know the final result!

      I'll try to remember to repost what i do. Plan A is to revisit the junkyard and try to get original bolts/nuts to fix it. Plan B will be some form of your suggestions.I just hope I do not run into that problem you showed where the wheel center hole did not fit over the wheel retainer guide.

    Helpful video! I'm currently borrowing my brothers 97 Ford Ranger 2.3L since my 88 Sentra needs some repairs. I've noticed that the spare is missing and the 19mm bolt is missing. Honestly I don't it was stolen or it never came with it lol. Do you know the specs on the 19mm bolt? I would like to use a T55 torx bolt like someone mentioned in the comments.

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee
      @TheOriginalBeeCee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome man, glad it helped! But unfortunately, I don’t know the specs on the bolt, both of my Ranger’s actually came with the bolt. But something you could definitely do is go to a junkyard or a u-pull-it, they are bound to have at least one 93-97, and you could potentially pull the bolt from a junker! Then if you wanted to upgrade to like a T55 etc., you actually have the OE bolt to go off of as well.

    Mite be a stupid question, but what if you flipped the tire over. I think the way the rim is shaped it will sit onto the piece on your carrier hanger. I don't think you need much protruding through the hole on the rim for it not to slide

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee
      @TheOriginalBeeCee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried that, and it didn’t work. Been a while so I don’t remember exactly why lol, but something with that particular wheel didn’t allow it to work with it flipped the opposite way.

      @@TheOriginalBeeCee My brother's 4-cylinder 2WD Ranger came with 195/70-14 tires; I saw in the video that both your wheel and tire are a little larger than that; I'm wondering if that could have something to do with why yours didn't fit over the center bump like you'd expect it to.

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee
      @TheOriginalBeeCee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Buist hey whats up man. That’s exactly what it is. Since this video, I’ve gotten another Ranger (‘96). It came with what looks like the original OE spare. Its a 225/70/14 and it fits perfect. I was using the OE wheel as a spare on this ‘97, which were the 15” 5-Stars with 235/70/15.

      Payden Oman I actually referred to the bar incorrectly in the video. The actual sway bar on these trucks goes around the rear differential. The bar that the spare tire mounts to actually isn’t the sway bar.
