Converting NI-MH and NI-CD Batteries to LI-ION | Makita 12V Battery Upgrade

  • In this video I converted a 12v Makita NI-MH replacement battery to LI-ION. I also found a way to use the original charger without modifying it. The original charger only charges the batteries to about 95%.
    I used some battery cells that were in a broken Makita 3ah battery. The battery I took the cells from fell in a bucket of water and the BMS broke but the cells are still fine. You can certainly use new cells if you want.
    The battery I made is very basic. All the parts you need can be found online. To find the BMS, just type into the search bar BMS 3S 20A or whatever size you need.
    You can also do the same thing for a 14.4v, 18v or any other size of battery but you will need the right amount of cells and the right BMS. You could also make a battery with a higher amp-hour by putting two series of cells in a parallel but you need the right size BMS and the housing needs to be able to fit it.
    You could use a battery welder and it would be much better than soldering but I don't have one.
    Please modify your batteries at your own risk.

    I just picked up a Makita 6270D 12V with the Battery pack from a thrift store today for 3 bucks. I’m going to be Upgrading it soon!

    I've been getting used batteries from Lowes recycle bin. If you ask and you tell them what you are doing they may let you. You can either repair them or use the bms or cells to fix what you have.

    Perfect, I have the same hammer drill and love it and don't want a new one!
    Before I get the parts needed for this is there any update I should be aware of?

      I think that if you’re going to do this project you have to commit and have the right tools, parts and a proper li-ion battery charger. I used recycled cells and cheap bms boards as well as soldering the cells together with bits of wire. I think nickel strips and a proper battery spot welder would be a large improvement. The original charger does work but it doesn’t charge them 100%.
      I’ve been pretty impressed with the replacement battery I have from Amazon, I know they are now 35 bucks instead of the 20 they used to be but you get what you pay for, the most recent one I bought is much better than the first two. Interestingly, although the li-ion batteries I made have more run time than the replacement batteries, they don’t give the tools as much power.
      So I guess the update is that although I managed to make my own batteries using scrap materials, they were rather mediocre. Thanks for watching.

    If I use Li instead of Ni-Cd, will the original charger still work. Or do I need a new charger specific for Li batteries.
    And is the BMS board necessary, I've seen videos where they use 3 batteries only.

    • @toolreviewsandrestorations
      @toolreviewsandrestorations  ปีที่แล้ว

      One of my original chargers charged the li-ion batteries although not to 100%. My other charger did not work but it might have been that the charger was broken. I have no idea if the BMS is necessary or not

    • @bloubear2557
      @bloubear2557 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      nope. it's a bad idea, use the bms to ensure the li ion longevity, ni mH chargers will ruin the li ion. bms keeps your battery health and performance optimal

    So it's been over a year I don't know if you have a follow-up video ...

    • @toolreviewsandrestorations

      They are still working fine. The performance on the impact driver and angle drill is fine however these batteries don’t really put out enough to run the drill properly. Using a stronger BMS, higher amp cells and a proper charger would help it work better on although it’s acceptable the way it is.

  • @xanadusanson621

    Apparently the charger is not working well, since when you measured it before charging it it was at 12.13 and after taking it out of the charger it measured 12.03. In addition, lithium batteries differ from nickel batteries by their voltage of 1.2 to 3.7 so it is impossible for the original charger to give you the full voltage value of a lithium because it was designed to charge only nickel cadmium batteries and not lithium. The value at full load should be approximately 12.60v.

    • @toolreviewsandrestorations
      @toolreviewsandrestorations  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I know that the original charger didn’t work that well but I didn’t want to have to spend more money on a charger

      @@toolreviewsandrestorations Yes, there is some hammering on the sides, etc, but sometimes then you need to glue broken parts, if you are unlucky :). I have one aftermarket NiMh battery for that drill, which is on screws, but this is the only one that still works, so I'll wait until it dies

    I also like this replace 1.2v 10 cell 12v to 18650. 3.7v 3 cell 12v but no strong. Some more do again 18650. 6cell 12v is i think strong

    Isnt that green/red light mean that battery is broken? There is no charging then. Only green light means it is fully charged. (from my experience with makita chargers)

    • @toolreviewsandrestorations
      @toolreviewsandrestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, with a real battery it would but with the chips I put in these batteries it just means it’s fully charged. It happens to these modded batteries at the end of the charge cycle every time I charge them and they still work.

    • @toolreviewsandrestorations
      @toolreviewsandrestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it’s worth it really depends on how much you value the tools you are making it for and how much all the parts are going to cost. I have two old Makita chargers, only the newer one charges it, the older one doesn’t. The old Dewalt charger works too.

      @@toolreviewsandrestorations mine is PA12 battery. I already bought the BMS like on the video, just waiting for battery cells. If case charger would not work, is it possible to charge it diferent way? Am not sure but I saw somewhere that people use some universal charger and solder plug on the battery. Thanks

    • @toolreviewsandrestorations
      @toolreviewsandrestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if the charger doesn’t work you can buy a universal charger and add a plug or convert the original charger to a li-ion charger, there are plenty of videos of how to do that.

    Chinese should stary maliny smalec battery packs with li-ion already in them. There is so much unnecessary space left inside battery pack after conversion.
