Key Players in the Opening of Parliament - Serjeant-at-Arms

The Serjeant-at-Arms is a permanent, non-political officer of the House and supports the Speaker and Presiding Officers in the smooth running of the House and managing access to the debating chamber and lobbies when the House is sitting.
During the Opening of Parliament, the Serjeant-at-Arms provides ceremonial support to the Clerk of the House and the Speaker-Elect. This includes accompanying the Speaker-Elect to Government House, where the Speaker’s role is confirmed by the Governor-General. During the State Opening of Parliament, the Serjeant opens the doors of the Chamber to the Usher of the Black Rod so he can summon Parliament to hear the speech from the Throne.
