6 cylinders in-line - so THAT's one similarity this DMU's Leyland engine has with the Benz's. While the differences are obvious (the DMU's 11.0L non-turbo vs the Benz's 3.5L turbo), their sounds and behaviors are still eerily similar (keeping in mind that my buddy's Benz - as I noted - dates back from 1990; I mean, how do we expect a diesel-engined luxury sedan that age to perform today?). :)
0:07 to 0:27 - Is it just me, or does Engine No.1 - including its starter - just coincidentally happens to sound like the 3.5L turbodiesel engine of the 1986-91 Mercedes-Benz 350SDL (an example, from 1990, of which a friend of mine sometimes drives)? There's no mistaking the similarities between their sound and behaviors (yes, my buddy's Benz also does tend to struggle at times while being started up)!
fancy someone comparing a boring old benz 350d with a growling Leyland - er there's no comparison had he said a daf engine or gardner then yes - but seriously???????!!!!!!!!!!
Allocated to Etches Park, Derby for a period in the 1970s paired with a trailer and 50496 (later 53496)
Sorry I don`t know what a Mercs.350SDL sounds like. These engines are Leyland 680`s (non turbo), they are 11 litre straight 6.
Just like the first time me and Frank started 479 & 531 at Oswestry Dewi lots of smoke and noise lmao

A 104 ain`t a 104 without smoke & noise!

i remember these in use in the 1980s on the warrington to liverpool lime street service
Godzilla coming out of hibernation!
You do need to give it a bit of throttle.....
Dewi sound,s as good as when me and frank started 53479 for the first time but not as much smoke
Knock knock knock knock
