here are some things i honestly do not like about Duke University...... but make sure you subscribe because I will be doing a part 2 of things I DO like about Duke hehehe :)

The cons:
-Forced 3 year on-campus housing (pre-COVID)
-Study abroad opportunities are not great with Duke--especially if you're in STEM
-Financial aid sucks if you're middle class (I've had to argue every year at Duke to give me more aid)
-Food plans are either too small or too large; food plans force unhealthy eating habits
-Administration is pretty white and racist--it is a private school in the South lol
-School is quite unwelcoming to Palestinians in particular; if a Palestinian advocates they're quick to be labeled as anti-semitic. In fact, this point actually compels me to say if you're Palestinian I'd consider how much of a support group you need before deciding to attend Duke cause you're not gonna get much there.
-Student body is quite self-segregated
-Parking is meh but I don't think it's that much worse from other schools
-Lot of the professors are meh too--they're top researchers and amazing in their field but teaching is not their top priority and some are only doing it cause they're forced too if they don't receive enough grants so it really translates into the quality of teaching
-I kinda wish the student body had more international students; I often found them the most interesting and culturally-aware compared to the typical American college student

Thanks for your honest assessment of Duke. The point about meh profs makes me sad. I'm a Duke professor (History dpt) and I am *very* committed to teaching. I know the dynamic you are talking about - top-tier research universities tend to attract faculty who do care more about research than teaching, and they don't necessarily give adequate support, training, and encouragement to faculty to up their teaching game - but I consistently work hard to mitigate that. My position: my students and their families are paying a lot to be in my classroom, so I owe it to them to give them my best. Am I "the best" on all days? Honestly no. I have hard days too. But I do try, and so do a lot of my colleagues in the History department, IMHO.

no matter where you go as a Palestinian you won't get a lotta support but i would say there is more support at duke than any where else with the cml and msa

i honestly think that duke was a good pick for my nephew because he can be in the company of other ethnicities. learning to be around a more diverse community is a learning experience. thanks for the video
Thanks for this. I really felt like it was the end of the world not being accepted into Duke last fall, but this con list made me glad I was rejected girl that parking is whack 😂

if youre upset at parking maybe dont be too glad about unc. that's literally the main complaint of all students there

i dont really understand how does this work... i read somewhere that there is 12% blacks at duke which is among the highest...8% Harvard, 7% Upenn

thats messed up on parking!! they need to make parking decal stickers so you can put it on your car
I currently go to NCCU(HCBU), which is ten minutes down the road.
They have something called the 10:40 break on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is a large social event that you'd be welcome to join.
Also, we're on campus! UNC, NCSU, and NCCU students come for research!

Hey, do you know anything about certain fraternities and sororities cutting ties with Duke? I just wanted an update on how campus life would look like or if anything is actually changing? (Also I'm Ghanaian :)
I am not sure about anything related to greek life sorry! Campus life will be back to normal in the fall hopefully :)

from my knowledge, yes but I can't really speak on that since I am not a member of the Asian community. Many minorities do seem to have issues with Duke though

Hey Thanks a lot for this info. I am an international student and I applied for the medical physics master program. I will probably come to duke next May. Is this area generally safe if you are living outside the school campus?
Hey Duke sophomore here. Im an international student as well and so far zero regrets picking duke. I live on west campus but a lot of my friends live in the apartment complexes all around the city. Imma be honest with you, Durham is not always the safest place. Some areas are definitely spots to stay away from, but that is usually the case far away from the campus. All the complexes students live in are in pretty safe areas. So safety is definitely not a problem living on or off campus.
I have lived near Durham my whole life. Durham is known across the state as one of the most dangerous cities in NC. The university itself is safe, but the city it is located in has a lot of violent activity.
Hi! I haven't lived off campus and I don't plan to. It's kind of normal to stay on campus for all 4 years but Durham is not the safest town. There is a lot of security on campus which is not, but you will not get that living off campus. Me and my friends have not had bad experiences off campus but Durham is not considered "safe".

Please stop it, clearly this video is about their experience at Duke and what they feel are the downsides of the university. Go to their video about the pros if you were looking to hear about the upsides of this institution because honestly this information was very helpful.
Love how you managed to downsize the fact that they feel alienated at their own school because it's not as diverse as Duke markets itself to be... very telling of your character.

@@laurac6108 hmm yeah no, I think forced housing for 3+ years, racism within the institution, food plans endorsing unhealthy eating habits etc, were very legitimate cons but clearly those factors don't seem like a problem to you. I think I have enough, no need to thank me. Hope you find what you're looking for though!
