Wade Mainer, country music pioneer, credited with inventing the two-finger banjo-picking style that paved the way for the bluegrass era, allowing the banjo to be more melodic, has died. (Sep 14, 2011) Born in 1907, he was 104. Wade Mainer is the last of the old guard from the 20's and 30's to pass on.
I just got back from the Bill Monroe Centennial celebration where they announced that Wade had passed. He died on what would have been Bill's 100th birthday. There was quite a selection of very old and influential pickers there all of which are probably not long for this world. I just hope the fans will continue to support the young talent that is out there.
I have watched this video for at least 20 times. Each time it took me back in time to experience the pure expression of human soul! Thank you for sharing your music!
Thankyou so much for this wonderful recording. Does anyone know where, if possible I could write to Mr. Mainer? I am interested in witing to him and humbly letting him know how I have enjoyed his music through the years. I am a student in San Diego CA and would be priviliged to be able to write to him. Thankyou everyone...
Wade is my neighbor and he is an inspiration to us all! 103 and still pretty spry for being a centry old.
J.E. and Wade Mainer need to be in the Country Music Hall Of Fame.
Wade lived just a few miles down the road from me. When I would call him, he was always ready to talk and give advice. I miss him and his wife.
What a life-104,and marriage-almost 74 years ! Hope the Grammys, acknowledge him someday with the Lifetime Achivement Award.
R.I.P. Wade.

Love that style of banjo picking! Just flat old timey.
This is an excellent interview with a great musician.
RIP Wade Mainer -a true classic
One of the true legends of pre-bluegrass (old-time) string band music.
What a great history lesson.
Shoot the Turkey Buzzard is almost the same tune as Rattlesnake Bit the Baby (a/k/a Take Me Back to Georgia or Boston Boy). Love the two-finger style.
God bless you all

When this old brother spoke the word, "musician" I've gotta pay attention
I live just about 35 miles from buncombe county over in yancey
Today is Wade's 103rd brithday!
Wade played in his brother’s band. J E Mainer and the mountaineers.
Thats my great uncle :-) They dont make people like him or my Great Grandpa JE anymore.
J. E. Mainer was such a great artist--I met him in 1969 at a bluegrass festival in Shade Gap PA
I played music with J E’s daughter Mary. She is gone from us too.
RIP Wade.

It's still possible, if you want it.
