Clayton seems like the most relatable TH-camr I’ve come across. There’s no cynicism in him, no hacky troll, just a dude who likes making videos about media he enjoys.
I'm going to be completely honest... Ang Lee's _Hulk_ is actually one of my favorite comic-book movies. If nothing else, for how ballsy, offbeat and unique it is. It feels like a movie made by a master filmmaker with a clear vision. Now... whether or not that vision is for you is going to vary wildly from person to person. And judging by the reception, it clearly wasn't the _Hulk_ that most people wanted. But it worked for me. Lee wanted to both explore the cerebral side of the character while also trying every trick in the book he could to literally bring a comic-book to the big-screen through framing, editing, etc. And I appreciated his take on the character, and his weird, sometimes counter-intuitive ideas. It was just... something different. Hell, it still is something different. And I think it's a nice change of pace compared to other comic-book films.
I totally agree, I can understand why people wouldn't like this movie but I really enjoyed it. This was the only hulk movie to really use the idea that the hulk gets larger and stronger as he gets more angry, which I think is a really cool aspect of the character
I remember watching this movie alone in a Swedish movie theater. In the middle of the movie the ceiling lights went on and two janitors walked in and started doing loud carpentry work on a row of seats in front of me for at least five minutes while the movie kept going, then they walked out and barely kept in mind to turn off the lights afterwards.
How strange. Do you attribute it to the film or was it just one of those odd things? If it only took five minutes it hardly seems urgent enough to interrupt a show XD
Or the fact that you were alone, I guess. They must have figured they weren’t going to get a better chance to irritate the least amount of customers possible :p
I never found the ongoing "celebrity jumping in and dying" gag to be funny, but this one was pure gold. Tony's slow and calm reaction, and then showing the face of Shrek just had me in stitches. Bravo 👏

Tone, too. The Poodles are ridiculous because the rest of the movie takes itself so seriously. Ragnarok doesn't get the hate because the whole thing is silly.
I think people were more tolerable with Hulk fighting a wolf in Ragnarok because of the realm they were in. I mean you had a guy who wielded lightning. This Hulk is far more tamed and was more grounded in reality (as best as it could be I guess), so I think that's where it comes from. Was a sweet ass fight tho.
Great, great movie, I think it was cast perfectly (Bana as Banner, Elliot as Ross Nolte as David and Connelly as Betty) some great action and I love how it's not just 'HULK SMASH'. My favorite Hulk film definitely, and Bana is much more enjoyable as Bruce Than Ruffalo, I enjoyed Ed Norton tbh.
I’m so glad this film is getting some love in this video and it definitely needs more. I saw this back in the day at the movies. As a kid I loved it even with the more dramatic/slow burn plot. I grew up with the Hulk comics, 70s show, 90s cartoon and I watched it non stop on my VHS. I definitely don’t hate the MCU Hulk film but it definitely isn’t as good as this version. It’s surprisingly needs to be looked at from another point of view and examined because they finally gave us the proper comic adaptation of the character. Sure if they had abomination or The Leader as the villain instead of the dad I think it could have worked but I find Nick Nolte fantastic in this film. The CG doesn’t hold up as well as it could but it ain’t bad. Great action and gorgeous cinematography. Story is very adult like and enjoyed that aspect tremendously. I think Lee and the cast were just awesome. I’ll defend this movie until the day I die
It seems it was something common, people not liking this movie, telling other people it's bad, other people skiping it, then watching it years later and thinking it was actually quite good.
I've always liked the Ang Lee Hulk film. I remember seeing it twice in theaters. Bought the DVD first day of release. I really liked the psychological aspect, and the trippy feel it has at times. Like Tony said it referenced a lot of ideas from the Peter David Hulk run. Which is my favorite run of Hulk.
Picture an Avengers movie in the early 2000s with Tobey Maguire's Spidey, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, Eric Bana's Hulk, Thomas Jane's Punisher, Ben Alleck's Daredevil, Wesley Snipes' Blade, and Ron Pearlman as Hellboy.
I'd really love to see Marvel revisit this Hulk in some way. Whether it be in a series, a comic or another movie with Eric Bana. Perhaps this Hulk becomes the MCU Maestro or something.
I wanted the same thing as you but i don’t know if i want to take the chance of marvel ruining this version of hulk. Hulk 2003 is too good to be ruined for me
The opening theme is one of Elfman's best tracks...When I hear the Horn as the Universal logo starts. Goosebumps just like The Spider Man Columbia startup..I saw X2 at the Drive In and my Cousin got a nail in his tire and vowed to never do that again. We were early and it was already packed. Still one of my favorite experience that was. Back to Hulk, Jennifer Connolly was rocking some pretty turtlenecks and Nolte was doing the acting equivelant to his Mug Shot. Loved the movie for some great effects and the battle with Ross s Military still top much of MCU Visual Effects.
One of the few films I walked out of theaters. I was so pysched because my little sisters LOVED Spider-Man and I wanted to share my love for HULK with them. Four minutes in, they wanted to leave, but I insisted we stay...........up until Hulk goes "Mario-Hopping" through the desert and I was just, "...........Okay, we can go. I can't justify this anymore" Saw it again on DVD, and thought, "Okay............I appreciate Ang Lee trying to do interesting things with the "comic book paneling..........but it's just not a GOOD "comic-action" movie."
I haven't seen it since it came out on DVD, and thought it was alright. I was a lot younger then, and my opinions usually tend to change for the better over time. I'm willing to give it another try. Thanks for another great video!
I remember seeing this Hulk movie on DVD. The comic panel shots were cool, but the plot was average. I did like the feature where several artists recreated a sequence using their own comic strips.
The movie sucks cause Eric Bana is hard to relate to... you feel no emotion for him. And he's a great actor ... I think it's the direction he was given.

It's a film about child abuse and a dysfunctional family trying to recreate the sadness of the 70s tv show. Strange, people don't casually watch it or show it to their children now.
I love this movie for trying something different. I love movie for all the weird stuff In it. And it's good serious hulk story line and not a comedy. I like my hulk to be scary and uncontrollable by Bruce.
As for him jumping in the various movies, Leterrier, the director of the Norton Hulk movie, has said in behind the scenes stuff he wanted to keep his Hulk very grounded (I suppose literally in this case). But thankfully Whedon seems like he had enough reverence for Hulk to stay largely true to his powerset, hence having him superjump in the Avengers movies. I remember when we first saw an action shot of the Hulk in a Superbowl TV Spot for Avengers 1, and it was him soaring through the sky to smash some flying aliens, it was such a breath of fresh air after 2008! It was incredible to see him soaring again for the first time since 2003! I hate when media doesn't depict him as being able to soar through the air! You may as well take away Spidey's web swinging, THAT's how integral I think super jumping is to Hulk.
i guess people were expecting goofy comic book movie...but this movie was not that and if people take it for what it is then they will enjoy it. if they showed up for joker which was a much more joyless movie then they can show up for this one. Maybe it just released at the wrong time.
It was way to early for a full cgi character. Not because people needed to get used to it, but because it looked like crap. As did flipping Yoda, which also sucked.
I feel like inbetween this and incredible hulk is the perfect hulk movie. Prefer this one but it needed more hulk sooner and abomination to fight at the end so yeah if you mixed these movies youd have a solid hulk movie. Thanks for the content Tony
My dislike of this movie was from the pacing. I dug the split screen use and the psychological drama stuff. But how long did I have to wait for the Hulk to show up. BTW Nick Nolte is a misunderstood genius😊
I’ve said this a few times, but you should just get an actor that can actually be a guest, set up the entrance bit, throw the dummy, but the actor actually stands up behind the counter in a crappy costume.
This movie is not only good, it's INTERESTING and UNIQUE. How many superhero movies are truly INTERESTING and UNIQUE nowadays? Not many if you ask me. Ang Lee's Hulk is interesting from an editing and filmmaking point of view, from a dramatic and human point of view, the acting is great, the music is beautiful, the vfx are incredible ballsy for its time. It's a great movie God dammit! 😄
I was able to see this in theatre!! Loved it. My girl friend at the time. Asking. Why is he jumping? Lol. Tony and Clayton I believe why he decided to save the jet. Was it seemed was, he could hear and heard the radio chatter. That the pilot was in trouble. But thanks to this review. I’m going to check it out again!! 🤘🏽❤️🤘🏽🤘🏽
Found this channel about a month-ish ago and have been hooked ever since. Binged almost all their reviews. So much fun. I'd love to see you guys review more horror flicks in the future. Maybe ones like "Lights Out" from 2016, or the "Hills Have Eyes" remake from 2006! Either way love the content. And 100%, Ang Lee's Hulk was always very underrated and got a bad reputation for no reason. I always loved it from day one 👌
I didn't mind the second Hulk movie, except that I could see the vestiges of it being a sequel to Ang Lee's Hulk. I don't know why they even bothered severing the ties between the two films.
As an Australian, I couldn't believe it when Eric Bana was cast as the Hulk. We all knew Bana as that dopey wacker on, TV sketch comedy show, Full Frontal. Every week on Full Frontal he wore a big, shiny, plastic dome of hair to lampoon Australian television journalist Ray Martin. Until 'Hulk' was released in theatres a part of me believed the Hulk would wear that same plastic headpiece painted green.
David Duchovny, Jeff Goldblum, Steve Buscemi, Billy Crudup, Johnny Depp, Edward Norton and Tom Cruise were considered for The Hulk. Joe Johnston, was considered to direct the film but turned it down. Ang Lee was picked after the producers were impressed by his film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Jonathan Hensleigh, JJ Abrams Larry Karazewski, Scott Alexander, Michael Tolken, David Hayter and Michael France all wrote the script.
It's funny when you go back and look at these older marvel movies especially when you realize there was apparently a Man-Thing movie. Also is that Hulk run with the control room the current Donny Cates run cause that's crazy and I love it
I’m older than you guys so I got it when I saw it in the theater. I loved the split screen, it was supposed to look like a comic book and I thought it worked.
The benefit of watching pirated movies, since local the theatre was closed, is that you could watch movies alone. That is why I liked a lot of movies like this version of the Hulk without being influenced by the others.
The only good things in this movie were Sam Elliott as General Ross,Nick Nolte and the David Banner abusive dad angle from the comics, that aside this movie is not that good. Y'know what is an underrated movie? "Beer League"!
i have a theory about this movie, in the 2012 movie, a guy asks Bruce if he's a space alien. in Captain Marvel we saw Skrulls change shape. in the Silver Surfer cartoon, we see the home planet of the Skrulls, and baby Skrulls look like baby T rexes. and in this movie, David is holding up a baby T Rex doll to his baby to see if his skin turns green, and it does, meaning he is a baby Skrull, which would mean that David is a Skrull, and that day in the room, his wife caught him transforming, and she held a knife up to him, thinking he was a monster, but he defended himself and she got stabbed, so that would make Bruce a half human , half Skrull, half Starfish?
I first saw this movie when it was first showing on TV, not movie channels like HBO or Cinemax, I mean more regular TV channels like FX, SciFi and the like. I remember watching it with my dad and him talking about how he thought the movie would have been much better if they brought Lou Ferrigno back and painted him green instead of using CGI. I remember this a lot more than anything in the film itself, granted I haven't seen the movie since then.
I remember seeing this in the theatre, had never read the comics, and loved it. Tbh I had a secret liking to it while other people didn't like it. Now that I know Hulk's origin, this movie is a nostalgia trip.
Okay, you guys have convinced me to give this movie another chance. I haven't watched it in like 15+ years, so maybe I was just a dumb teenager when I thought it sucked. I feel like I'd enjoy it more than The Incredible Hulk at this point.
The MCU can use any and all Hulk characters and plots, the specific catch is that if they make an actual Hulk film with his name in the title Universal gets distribution rights & a chunk of the profits. Make 1/4 of a Planet Hulk film, share billing w/ an Asgardian god & call it Thor Ragnarok and you’ve got yourself a $tew goin’! A very profitable $TEW you aint gotta share! 😜 #ArrestedDevelopment
yes Disney actually has the film rights to hulk. Universal only has distribution rights. Disney is not going to fund a movie that will never be on Disney plus. And disney are not in the game of sharing profits. It's sad. Disney needs to be broken up they are already a monopoly.
This movie is phenomenal. It's the original Batman v Superman: Dawn of justice. A big budget indie film that swings big tackles bigger riskier issues and takes itself seriously. It has fun without making fun(of the source material) unlike the MCU. This and unbreakable were two great superhero hero movies that didn't get the fanfare they deserved then or even now but were really ahead of the curve and don't get the recognition for being some of the first in the genre to aspire to a level of sophistication ppl attribute to the dark knight as originating
The thing is Bruce's career path ISN'T coincidence Big part of his story is repressed memories and the first 4 years of his life was spent on a military base with his scientist father who was obsessed with his work and clearly brought it home with him. That could very easily shape our values at such a formative period in our life. Especially if the adoptive family continued that emphasis on higher learning.
I remember when this came out, a lot of people I knew had seen a rough cut that leaked. This version of the movie had a lot of half-finished special effects, missing music and the pacing wasn’t quite right . I’m not sure how much this affected the perception of the movie but I remember a lot of people saying how bad it was based on they thought the rough cut was real
I really dig these reviews with clayton. King Kong was probably my favorite review this year. You didnt lie to me on Patreon about summer movies. This might be my favorite yet tho
I do have to say that you guys didn't convert me. I still really don't like this movie, but I do love Thr Amazing Spider-Man movies, The 2000s Fantastic Four movies, and the first Ghost Rider. So we'll just have to agree to disagree when it comes to super hero movies.
The design was decent but what really shined was the showcasing of his abilities. From growing in size, to running fast af and then jumping was simply amazing. But the script was meh and the dogs were terrible. The movie deserves a C- for me.
It’s all subjective but the problem with this film for me is it’s tonal whiplash. Ang Lee makes the same mistake as Joel Schumacher in that they think making a “comic book” adaptation needs to involve literal tacky comic panels and loud campy theatrics along side a genuine attempt at human pathos and drama between father & son. Lee also takes the weirdest/silliest license with Hulks abilities making him constantly grow into the size of Gojira! lol
Looking forward to seeing this one. It’s definitely underrated for sure. As a kid, I thought it was fine but didn’t really appreciate it. After seeing all the other Hulks, I can say that this one is my favorite for sure. Love Ang Lee’s style and the comic panel transitions and the cast is fantastic.
I actually just bought this on 4K and I'm waiting for it to come in. I liked it when it came out. I was 13 at the time and I wasn't really aware of the hate of it at the time. Kind of like Godzilla 1998, I liked it when it came out and found out just how much people hated it later. But while I can understand the hate for Godzilla 1998 (I still like it as a giant monster movie but a good adaptation of the source material it is not) to this day I still don't understand the hate for Hulk. The music is incredible, and the acting is top great. I also thought that the fight with the dogs was badass. I was also on the side of thinking that the desert chase went on for too long. Because I did totally forget about his Dad until they bring him in at the end and I was like "Oh shit! That's right! He's got crazy powers now!" I think if they made the desert chase shorter this would have been a better and tighter film. But overall, I think it's great and much better than The Incredible Hulk which I don't even include in my MCU rewatches when I do those. Because why bother?

I actually enjoyed it but it needed more action and a better villain.
I wonder what the sequel would have been like.
More action? The entire middle sequence of this film is one giant action sequence.
This was a fun watch! Love this movie and I talk with Klayton about it all the time, hahaha
I completely forgot about this movie. Will have to go back and see it again.
This movie was the time i knew that one of the hulk super powers was jumping really far.
I’d watch this on loop for 24 hours rather than Jurassic World: Dinosaurs in Public
This made me remember how damn good so many of the action scenes are in this. I think the hulk might be genuinely scarier in this than any other movie
Eric Bana plays Bruce Banner.
Eric Bana is Australian.
Bana is how Australians pronounce Banner.
COINCIDENCE?!
probably.
@@Solarclypse J.J. Abrams wrote a script for this? I thought he did Star Wars.
KLAYTON KNOWS THE RIDDLE OF STEEL.
The benefit of watching pirated movies, since local the theatre was closed, is that you could watch movies alone. That is why I liked a lot of movies like this version of the Hulk without being influenced by the others.
This movie is fantastic. I'm a huge Hulk comic book fan, and I loved it. I think it was made for comic book fans. Eric Bana did a fantastic job.
i don’t think it’s underrated. it’s a very boring, poorly edited movie with very little action, obnoxious transitions, and AWFUL cgi
Give it another shot
@@HackTheMovies i rewatched it a month ago and i still hated it
@@cinematicsterling6897 listen to our reasoning then!
Great video chaps!
The director's cut of Daredevil is good
Underrated yes. I have seen it about ten times. It is an piece of art.
Jennifer Connelly is so beautiful in this movie.
When isn't she beautiful in a movie?
Point taken. She’s always a knockout.
No.
The teaser of this movie use to terrify me as a kid.
I remember seeing this in the theatre, had never read the comics, and loved it. Tbh I had a secret liking to it while other people didn't like it. Now that I know Hulk's origin, this movie is a nostalgia trip.
i saw it as well in theatre kind of fell asleep toward the began part
25:19 i think they were making a poor attempt at comic book panels not a poor attempt at split screens.
Heck yeah! More Klayton!
Its not awful or anything its just EXTREMELY boring and aggressively meh.
Yeah is a shame this movie gets hates I remember loving this movie as a kid
This movie is phenomenal. It's the original Batman v Superman: Dawn of justice. A big budget indie film that swings big tackles bigger riskier issues and takes itself seriously. It has fun without making fun(of the source material) unlike the MCU.
This and unbreakable were two great superhero hero movies that didn't get the fanfare they deserved then or even now but were really ahead of the curve and don't get the recognition for being some of the first in the genre to aspire to a level of sophistication ppl attribute to the dark knight as originating
I'll be honest it's not my favorite hulk movie but I loved this hulk design
The thing is Bruce's career path ISN'T coincidence
Big part of his story is repressed memories and the first 4 years of his life was spent on a military base with his scientist father who was obsessed with his work and clearly brought it home with him.
Hulk was also missing his pants in this version
I really dig these reviews with clayton. King Kong was probably my favorite review this year. You didnt lie to me on Patreon about summer movies. This might be my favorite yet tho
I do have to say that you guys didn't convert me. I still really don't like this movie, but I do love Thr Amazing Spider-Man movies, The 2000s Fantastic Four movies, and the first Ghost Rider. So we'll just have to agree to disagree when it comes to super hero movies.
I get it some people hate it but for me I like it what if Eric Bana stayed as hulk ? would he stayed a chance against Thanos?
I love that boing sound that "hulk" made hitting the counter. That sealed it.
The Hulk makes me hungry for creamed corn and canned peas, so whatever he's in is okay in my book.
Saw it in the movie theater and loved it.
Spider-man 2 and X-2 are two of the biggest overrated movies ever. And X-3 and Spider-Man 3 both sucked
