I was born just two months later, in December of 2001. I'm feeling nostalgic for a time I never knew.

Wow, I went to the now-demolished Chelsea School in downtown Silver Spring from 1998-2002, this is just how I remember it. I was allowed to wander the city during lunch, go to Shitty Place, go to the music stores, hit the CD Game Exchange, peek through the plywood around the construction sites. It was a really interesting time to be in Silver Spring.

I moved to DTSS in 1997, just as the new development was taking place. I remember the old civic building being demolished and them playing movies on the side of CityPlace before all the work started. I also remember the old McDonald's across from the pre-relocated Silver Diner. This place felt like a ghost town.
You can quibble all you want about development and it's side effects, but what's undeniable is this changed the character of a downtown most people didn't care to visit after 5pm, if ever. DTSS is now a destination.
Personally, while it priced me out of my downtown apartment (I ended up buying a townhouse a couple of miles away for a mortgage that was less than my rent) I've found the redevelopment to be a major plus.

Thank You for this. Hard to remember what Downtown Silver Spring looked like before the 2001/2002 over development invasion that swept every major city at that time.

I moved to Silver Spring in 1994 and would visit City Place often because that’s what was the hang out per say… Long before it has be revitalized… By 1997, it spent much more time since my mom worked at Montgomery College at the Takoma Park campus… I was about 14 when this video was made…

I lived near the old Blair High School from 1980 to 2008. I never went to downtown SS except one time to a baby store around 1981 ( which I cannot recall the name of) I had to pay to park. I bought a sippy cup for my daughter and I paid more to park than the sippy cup cost. I never went back until the revitalization and Whole Foods came. After that I enjoyed going on the weekends early in the morning before parking issues and crowds. Loved it. I moved in 2008. Thanks for the video.
