  • Come along as we explore one of the most scenic hikes in all of the Gunks! Located in Minnewaska State Park Preserve, this 8-mile roundtrip trek features endless panoramas, plentiful glacial erratics, AND perilous cliffs...What more could you ask for?! Oh, and let's not forget the parks "sky lakes" and cheek-pinchingly cute pitch pines. The time is ripe to take in the veritable cornucopia of natural beauty offered by this hike!

"Peppered with Pitch Pines"; what a wonderful alliteration. Awesome hike too.

My son and I loved this hike even though can be exhausting. There are many great overlooks, aside from Gertrude's Nose, along the way and the terrain changes throughout the route.
If you take the route in a clockwise direction, look for the "ice cave." We found it by chance since it is just off the path. It is a small cave opening and had 50 degree air pouring out like a strong ac. Very refreshing on a hot day and a unique feature of the land. As you head down the hill about halfway through the hike, look for it on your left, about 50 yards before you reach the power lines. If you go the opposite route it will be past the2nd power lines, going up the hill on the right.
Another tip would be to bring a really strong flashlight to see down the various cracks and crevices...and caves.

Completed this yesterday and TOTALLY AGREE with doubling back from Gertrude's Nose the way you came. The Gertrude's Nose to Milbrook Mountain after a rainy day is really slipper dangerous and also the way through Coxing Kill is way way too much climbing for someone who's already tired.
We used the carriage road to return after milbrook mountain as we were dead tired after the climb and slipping and falling and it ended up being like 9.8 mile loop.

Beautiful hike. We just recently did this one and it started snowing as we reached the peak. What a nice day

Awesome hike, just be aware that extended portions of the Gertrudes Nose trail and Millbrook Mountain have poor footing, one needs to pay careful attention of the rocks and root networks to avoid a spill or worse. Aside from that, a great hike with something for everyone

I'm actually shocked that you guys don't realize you are hiking on ancient megaliths… Take some deep dives and look at what you have been exploring! Love and universal growth be yours!

We made that loop twice. Second time in February. It was getting darker when we were on our way back. In the last couple of miles trail was going down the hill, so was the water... Or feet were wet, it was seriously getting dark, and we were climbing last stretch up to the lake. Narrow trail was on the side of the hill. Water that was melting during the day was trickling down over the trail and down. It formed iced mountains making it almost impossible to pass through. We could hang on tree branches and bushes and almost climb like monkeys, but our dog couldn’t do so. It was bad, we made it eventually, but were scratched, wet, traumatized and walked trail from lake to parking lot in complete darkness. Ranger was waiting for us near car, so we also had to explain ourselves. It was once in a lifetime experience) oh, and I believe gertrude’s nose (that cliff from video) fell off.

Just wondering how long do you guys drive to get to this hike? It looks so beautiful, but it's three hours from my house. Can you do all that in a day? How long did the hiking take? Thanks for sharing!

Hey! Totally doable in a day, so long as you're prepared with water/snacks/enough daylight :) Should take about 5 hours to complete the loop. Check out my blog post for more information at goo.gl/qDec4V
