3:17 a video on the London Dockland's Development Corporation (and perhaps also it's Olympic park spiritual successor, the London Legacy Development Corporation) would be really interesting!
To be honest, exactly what different political entities do is something that I feel that people could be a lot better educated in. One common reason for petitions on the Government website getting rejected is that they're about issues that the Government aren't responsible for (although that also includes things that aren't related to politics at all - for instance, there was one for Roy Hodgson to be sacked as England manager)
Can I just say, the shots at 5:39 (sun & shade over the Tower of London) and 7:04 (ferry mooring at sunset) are some of your best shots. A real treat. 😊
get out and vote is absolutely the right advice. Most politicians only receive a minority backing from the electorate, with the bulk of people who are eligible to vote deciding not to vote. So when voters decide that they can't be bothered about the candidates, we get politicians that decide they don't have to bother about voters.
As a 'brief overview', this was super superb. Every voter in London should be forced to watch it before they enter the polling booth. Some candidates in the election should be forced to watch it, too. I've been surprised by at least one 'mainstream' politician who doesn't appear to know the job she's standing for.
Great video Jago. Light but apt and usefully well timed. I can but echo the get out and vote sentiment. Make sure you are registered, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE VOTER ID, and no matter what age you are, go and tick a box on a piece of paper.
I wrote to the mayor's office ( in Boris' time I think ) suggesting a new railway station in London. I got a reply that National Rail wasnt the Mayors responsibility (or problem) it was either up to the train company or national government to do that . now this wasnt my reading of how TfL should work on joined up transport policy but I couldnt be arsed to make that point ( actually they were promoting CR2 at the time with TfL funding , etc ). As it was the Mayor's office funded the building of a block of flats on the footprint of the area I suggested for a station, the residents of the flats dont have an accessible rail service that goes past their door and they clog up the slow moving buses,
Jago, two videos ago: "I don't like discussing politics on this channel, but when talking about the history of railways, it is unavoidable." Jago, this video: "Let's discuss politics for eleven minutes, so you can decide which candidate to vote for in the mayoral election." That escalated quickly. 😂
Would very much like to see a video on the London Docklands please. Very informative video, I don’t live in London but tend to visit 2 or 3 times a year.
As a non-Brit I found this very interesting. Thank you! And I mean this honestly: I'm glad you were able to find a use for that random Jesus parade footage!
Jago, This piece is beyond excellent. Super informative, with incredibly beautiful videography! More of this please - and I live in the rebellious colonies! Excellent work!
I'd say the Mayor of London has status far more akin to that of the Scottish or Welsh First Ministers than that of other English metro Mayors, which is fair as far as I am concerned, as London has an economy and size far larger than the rest of England. I'd also like to say that I don't think (from an outside perspective) that London has had a bad (modern) mayor, Livingstone, Johnson and Khan have each had their fair share of success and failures, and there will always be tough decisions that upset people. Compare to say, Bristol, that has such a universally disliked Mayor that they voted to scrap the whole office. So disliked is Marvin Rees that he couldn't even get selected as an MP candidate by his own party.
Thank you, Jago, as always. I am a bit out of touch with British and London politics, so this was a good way to get an unbiased insight into what's going on. Please do more. I'm sure you will find not only train enthusiasts like your little excursions. Oh, and you are the reason I signed up with the alumni organisation of my old prep school in East London. So thank you for that also.
Since I don't live in London I'm not very invested in any elections, but now that you've pointed it out I won't be able to stop thinking of the Mayor of London as a cheerleader. Imagine Boris Johnson and Sadiq Khan in uniform, with pom-poms and everything
I live in Bristol which is a city that voted to abolish the role of mayor, with the incumbent mayor being largely universally disliked across the political spectrum. I must admit, I don’t really know much about how the system works but I would be interested to know as to whether the system operated differently here or whether the cities and their structures, cultures and funding are too different for the mayoral system to work in a smaller city. At least now I know how London’s works! Thanks Jago!
Thanks Jago - that was a very clear non biased video. You really did ought to have put some shots of the new city hall in. Whatever you say it’s totally different: and in EAST LONDON - yaaaaaay
Well done for covering this. I think we seem to be developing more layers than an onion here 😂 Particularly now we’ve tried to take the Mayor of London model out to other areas like Manchester and West Yorkshire (there’s another story! 😂) but the Government still has considerable control, we don’t have a federal/regional system being perhaps our country is too small but we certainly have the population. I spent 5 years of my life studying this many years ago - I have a HND in Public Administration!! I strongly support your message about voting and to add even if you do not like any of the candidates or parties - damage the voting paper by putting a line through the whole thing. These still get noted/counted as a kind of protest vote that the parties/candidates need to do better.
Nice to see Potter's fields there - I worked for the Museum of London in th eightoes and wewere based in a warehouse behind them, next to the former St Olave's school and towerr bridge road.
Too many layers of democratic government, local or nationwide, often leads to a degree of confusion and can lead to cynicism by some. Some of the changes to local government which are designed to lead to better democracy will often have the opposite outcome.
I would disagree that this has happened in London though. The devolved power London has are unique and frankly essential. It's too big for just local authorities to run. It's not practical to run the whole city from one central authority, there's too much going on. That middle layer works really well for somewhere so complicated and large as London. Without a body that sets the direction and helps coordinate you just get the chaos of the late 1990s where every borough was off doing their own thing.
I was at a University once and a post-graduate scientist, annoyed by the pomp of a civic visit, wrote a poster for the noticeboard and it went '*u*k off Lord Mare'.
Yes, get out there and vote! I don't care who you vote for (actually, I do!), but if you don't vote you can be sure you will get the governance you deserve, rather than the one you want.
As to knowing too much about politics, I'm reminded of a line from American humourist P.J. O'Rourke - "What this country needs is fewer people who know what this country needs."
At least you can vote for a new mayor, in The Netherlands the local council can express it's wishes and list possible candidates, but the decision is made for us by higher government.
Another brilliant video sir, award yourself a cup of tea and some biscuits...id like to know how the city of London and greafer London work together on schemes, eg the building of crossrail, bus stop placement etc?
A video about the LDDC, with a side discussion of the blue Docklands Transit minibuses and how they failed for lack of integration in the Travelcard/Capitalcard zones, would be most welcome - extra kudos for a discussion of the P13 and its predecessor, the 82 IIRC \m/
In light of the polite request to play nice in the comment section: I _really_ like the night shots of London. Yes, I've said this several times before. There still aren't enough of them. It's just so pretty...
I wonder how far into editing this video it was until Jago found out that City Hall moved to Newham, but decided that he has so much footage of Southwark he decided to use it anyway.
I wont get to vote because I don't live in but London but I do live just outside the M25 ring road around London. I used to work in London and often travel to London. Everything that the Mayor and his cronies get up to with regard to transport policing and planning often still affects me. The overspill from London and the knock on effects are enormous for people outside London in the south east of England. We suffer from their stupidity almost as much as Londoners. Well done for reminding people to vote .
Sorry if I got distracted and wasn't paying attention all the time, but you showed two of the buildings I used to work in... (in different boroughs, I suppose I should add, and "no names, no pack drill" so as not to dox myself).
If you're in London, make sure you vote for whom you want and don't forget your photo ID. Don't forget it's three votes, a cross on each, one for a mayor, one for a London regional candidate and one for a party on the LDC, that last one is done on PR. Have fun. 😁 LBC always talks to the main candidates in any election or by election, so long as they are willing to come and speak on the radio station.
Don't forget confusion with the Lord Mayor of London which,as I understand it,is a role that just covers the City.I wonder if Sir Boris has set his sights on becoming Lord Mayor of London too. plenty of upmarket types there to vote him in although not many GB News watchers so maybe his chances aren't as good as it looks on the surface?
Can you please do a video on Westbourne park BR station? there appears to be no trace of it and many people dont believe it existed, also can you please find the other ordinal directions of 'wark'?
So what does Ground News have to say about legendary political candidate Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F'tang-F'tang-Olé-Biscuitbarrel?
Great video, Jago. I don’t get a vote for the mayor but I live close to the outer side of the M25 so what happens in London does impact us to an extent - good to find out how it all works.
I'm not a UK citizen but Jago has brought up the points that anyone should be researching before heading to out to vote. Irregardless of where you live.
all the metropolitan counties have mayoral elections next week, not just London - the creation of those mayorships was relatively recent (within the last 10 years) so I'll be voting, but it'll be for a candidate in South Yorkshire
My brain has turned to mush. I was enjoying the interesting and varied footage a bit too much, whilst trying to concentrate on your excellent narrative, I watched it again the next day and am all fixed up again.
Nice video Jago, but a little late for me as I have already (postal) voted. I would encourage any other postal voters to fill in your signature and DOB, put a cross on each of the papers and get it sent off ASAP. It has to arrive by May 2nd and the postal service may take their time.⏳✏🗳🗳🗳✉📮
Ken Livingstone was an ‘Independent’ for his first term as Mayor having stood against the official Labour candidate.
This is SUCH an important video. We need more impartial explainers of how our governance is structured and who does what. Thank you so much Jago!
If there's one write-in vote for Charles Tyson Yerkes, _we'll_ know who it's from...
I want someone whose only going to hold office during the day. Anything else would be a night mayor.
My dad told me that if you don't vote you can't complain if the wrong one gets in.
Count Binface for London Mayor!
3:17 a video on the London Dockland's Development Corporation (and perhaps also it's Olympic park spiritual successor, the London Legacy Development Corporation) would be really interesting!

I’ve made my mind up.
JAGO FOR MAYOR OF LONDON
Can I just say, the shots at 5:39 (sun & shade over the Tower of London) and 7:04 (ferry mooring at sunset) are some of your best shots. A real treat. 😊
Thank you!

So when voters decide that they can't be bothered about the candidates, we get politicians that decide they don't have to bother about voters.
"Get out there and vote" - A simple message, but one which is so important.
We want Jago as Mayor of London. Jago will champion public transport and make us love anything that runs on rails.
As a 'brief overview', this was super superb.
Every voter in London should be forced to watch it before they enter the polling booth.
Some candidates in the election should be forced to watch it, too. I've been surprised by at least one 'mainstream' politician who doesn't appear to know the job she's standing for.
A masterpiece of clarity,Jago. The underlying principle is to vote...it's taken the lives of thousands to get their voices heard, don't waste it!
Great video Jago. Light but apt and usefully well timed. I can but echo the get out and vote sentiment. Make sure you are registered, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE VOTER ID, and no matter what age you are, go and tick a box on a piece of paper.
Interesting! A political assembly in the UK that uses proportional representation? You ought to get parliament to do that too. 👍🏻
The Lord Mayor of London gets a far more impressive hat than the Mayor of London .
Mr Hazzard always gets my vote!
Yes, docklands video please!
This video deserves to be sent to every voter in London!!
Great video🎉
Appreciate the impartial nature of it, and the important message to get out and vote - yay democracy!
Jago, two videos ago: "I don't like discussing politics on this channel, but when talking about the history of railways, it is unavoidable."
Jago, this video: "Let's discuss politics for eleven minutes, so you can decide which candidate to vote for in the mayoral election."
That escalated quickly. 😂
Tom Scott described London for Americans as "If Washington D.C. also had Wall Street and Hollywood."
My money is on Richard Whittington, but as a non-Londoner and being 600 years too late, its not down to me...
COUNT BINFACE FTW!
... I don't live in London.
While I don't live in London you have inspired me to vote anyway
Really excellent, interesting video - thanks.
Would very much like to see a video on the London Docklands please. Very informative video, I don’t live in London but tend to visit 2 or 3 times a year.

10:17 Killed it with this one 😂

It’s the 17:30 leaving from platform 1 from the enigma that’s called Jago Hazzard 👊🏽
Thanks Jago - that was a very clear non biased video. You really did ought to have put some shots of the new city hall in. Whatever you say it’s totally different: and in EAST LONDON - yaaaaaay
Vote early
Vote often
Vote Jago.

However, funding for the London Mayor is very limited, they only get 7% of taxes raised in London, unlike New York at 54% and Tokyo over 35 - 40%.
A usefull and informative video without bias, well done once again Jago
Too many layers of democratic government, local or nationwide, often leads to a degree of confusion and can lead to cynicism by some. Some of the changes to local government which are designed to lead to better democracy will often have the opposite outcome.
You need accountability though both with government and corporate - Or you'll end up with a fascistic / stalinst Communist version of both...
I would disagree that this has happened in London though. The devolved power London has are unique and frankly essential. It's too big for just local authorities to run. There I was thinking Mr Hazard would have twisted tables and talked about the old mayor of London - the one in charge of the square mile
Yes, get out there and vote! I don't care who you vote for (actually, I do!), but if you don't vote you can be sure you will get the governance you deserve, rather than the one you want.
surpirsed to see your final shot from the top of Lift 109. We were there only yesterday (Saturday). Great view.
Even the sponsor was about getting informed and making your own mind up, "little bit of politics" without his own bias, nice one Jago ✊😎
I am delighted to say that UERL fully endorses Count Binface for London Mayor on May 2nd! Lets make May 2nd Bindependence Day!
As to knowing too much about politics, I'm reminded of a line from American humourist P.J. O'Rourke - "What this country needs is fewer people who know what this country needs."
Good one Jago 👍
Please tell me that one of the 2 green members is Yoda. 😂
At least you can vote for a new mayor, in The Netherlands the local council can express it's wishes and list possible candidates, but the decision is made for us by higher government.
A follow up video about the City of London would be great, describing how it is different from the rest of London
Thank you 😊
Best possible time to upload this video
Another brilliant video sir, award yourself a cup of tea and some biscuits...id like to know how the city of London and greafer London work together on schemes, eg the building of crossrail, bus stop placement etc?
What have the Romans ever done for us?
A video about the LDDC, with a side discussion of the blue Docklands Transit minibuses and how they failed for lack of integration in the Travelcard/Capitalcard zones, would be most welcome - extra kudos for a discussion of the P13 and its predecessor, the 82 IIRC \m/
I learned a lot! Thank you! I’m looking forward to your video(s) on Labour’s idea of re-nationalizing the railways!
Not me pretending I can keep up🤦🏾♀😂. Alright, let's dust off the old brain cells🧐
I think they should be non-affiliated to be the London Mayor. Unbiased leadership would be a much better idea.
Good timing Jago 👍🏾
I wont get to vote because I don't live in but London but I do live just outside the M25 ring road around London. I used to work in London and often travel to London. Better job at explaining politics than many others
Thanks Jago for the info & I loved the film footage (mind you that'a always good on your channel) ! Did anyone watch 'Count Binface's' videos ?
9:52 this looks like the housing estate in Minghella’s film Breaking and Entering’
3:20 Well... It just so happened that this is exactly why I've come here, sir Jago :)
"And Transport for London is in charge of transport...for London" LOL
Do you remember the London Residuary Body - didnt that have control of London Transport between GLC and GLA times ?
Civics 101 with Prof Jago Hazzard! Excellent class for this non-Londoner.
Sorry if I got distracted and wasn't paying attention all the time, but you showed two of the buildings I used to work in... (in different boroughs, I suppose I should add, and "no names, no pack drill" so as not to dox myself).
I would love a video on the development of the Docklands!
Love to see my all time favourite building at 9:15 😍
A party political broadcast on behalf of the sensible party. 😊
Nice one Jago.

I dont know but I'd always assumed that being Mayor involved lots of death by PowerPoint meetings and attending the opening of things around London?
Great video, Jago. I don’t get a vote for the mayor but I live close to the outer side of the M25 so what happens in London does impact us to an extent - good to find out how it all works.
I'm not a UK citizen but Jago has brought up the points that anyone should be researching before heading to out to vote. Irregardless of where you live.
I feel like I'm just too knowledgable about politics.
Not a lot! Generally self-serving politicians. I would, however, encourage everyone who's eligible to vote. You can't moan if you don't!
Its a shame that City Hall (Near Tower Bridge) was a PFI cock up, it looks so much better than City Hall (Newham near the Dangleway)
Very good question 😂
Thinking aloud is welcomed, as is the idea of a Docklands video
all the metropolitan counties have mayoral elections next week, not just London - the creation of those mayorships was relatively recent (within the last 10 years)

Is there a none of the above option on the ballott?
Good video, go and vote if you can. And thank you for pointing out all the complexities of governance. Are you sure you wouldn't mind being mayor...?
Cool video. I’ve always found London interesting.
