Chris Jones I saw that bro it was a very late start this season. I’ll have to adjust when I’m going due to the late start. I’m trying to hit the coho run. It’s all about timing in that river. When are you going?
Now that's the kind of video that is needed, not many go into those important details and specifics. It can make a first time fly fishing person look like they know what their doing, haha.
Great video, I really learned a lot and that last tip for battle fishing was really good. When it is busy it really is hard to step out of the river and get your spot back.
John M size I’ve used both and they both work but 2/0 is a little bit larger. I prefer the size 2 especially if your going in October because it will increase your odds of getting a steelhead.
Master Crow Outdoors thanks man. Wish I could have made it north your way. Covid shut that down. Although, some of my buddies still went to some of our favorite lakes in your knock of the woods but fished on the u.s. side.
Michael Shaw like you won’t ever be able to get a king salmon to rise in a dry fly. And you’re always fishing very fast water so you need that split shot.
Thanks for the vid. I learned a lot here. Just got my first set of waders and my first rod so I'll be heading out to Pulaski on occasion on my own for the first time (I usually go with and borrow gear from an experienced friend). Looking forward to future videos
@@OneThird1533 you can use tippet if you want but you’re using heavy weight around a lot of snags in fast water. There are also a lot of people ready to step in your hole the second you break off. It’s cheaper and easier to use straight floro or maxima line for leader. Takes less time to rig up and saves you money. A lot of guys try to make salmon fishing very technical but it shouldn’t be lol.
JP Sav4 In late October you can still find some Kong’s upriver near Altmar as well. They will be dirty and beat up though lol. I’m sure your son won’t mind if he’s catching fish
Good deal brother, i just posted a video similar to this yesterday lol. I cant wait for salmon bro ive been itching for a few weeks bro. I like ur theory on the split shots i will be using that. Good luck this year. Tight lines!
Jag Fishing i fish those places but not early on. It might come down to water levels. I also would never talk about those spots in a video because I like them to stay secluded. You put a spot like that online and it’s over lol.
Great vid!!! Best yet I’ve seen and highly informative. As you’ve already said, this isn’t a typical fly setup and definitely a combo of spin setup ported over to a fly rod. That said, if you were trying to catch Kings on flies at the Salmon River there, you have some patterns you’d recommend? Also, reading this “weighted” reg (meaning 1/8oz max) feathered flies(?) are allowed there vs putting on a couple of split shots lead 48” above a swivel. Any thoughts on weighted flies? Fan from Dallas, TX!
Any egg pattern fly or stonefly should work. Don’t go crazy, the majority of salmon landed up there are getting flossed or are bitting out of reaction. (I don’t use weighted hooks) You may have to read the regs on that.
North Jersey Giants I don’t measure the backing but so that comes down to personal preference. 150 to 200 or so yards on the floro. All comes down to how much you want to chase.
I believe you still need a swivel even if you are using straight floro on the real. The regs say there needs to be a break in the main line to leader so the when the weight is apllied there is no chance of it sliding. Other wise good info! What dates are you goin this year? I had to book early mid september because end of September is already sold out at the DSR.
Yes to be legal you need a swivel break and you’re not allowed to buy lead either. I’m not booked for anything this year yet. I’ve had a lot of luck with fishing really early in august, I’ve battlefished in October, and done well late on steel. This year I want to try something different and hit the coho run in September. I’m not going to lock in on anything. I’ll wait until the reports are good and then shoot up the following day. That’s terrible news about dsr. I’ll see if I can pick up an afternoon pass or something. Tight lines brother!
xader4 yes you can use led but it’s illegal to sell it up there. Here goes the regulations: www.salmonriver.us/trout-salmon-fishing-regulations-salmon-river/index.html
Everything will be delayed but it all depends on your expectations. It’s fall and there will be fish in the river moving up in trickles of two or three even when it sucks. Guys that are sight fishing in shallow water are and will continue to catch them. I think everything is behind 2 weeks but that’s just my opinion. If you want a safe bet for salmon try Columbus Day weekend. The problem is that everyone else knows that and will be there. I’m not as excited for salmon anymore to be honest. I know that some may bite out of reaction, but those fish are not there to actively feed. I’ll probably go up late September or early October for a day or two but I get more excited by the big browns and steelhead that will show up late October and November. Those trout are there to feed on salmon eggs so I rather target them. Anyways, watch the water levels and the reports. I like salmon river newbie for reports. The dsr reports are accurate but they often Jazz them up a bit to bring in the money. . Pay attention to the temps during the day and at night. These are all things that influence the fish. If you want to gamble to be there for the first big push, Look at the date of when you went there last year (if you timed it right) and add a week or maybe two. Good luck brother!
@handberrybea Thanks buddy! What fantastic and honest feedback. I love it, brother. This has become one of my favorite channels including channels from when I hit the Big Island(Hawaii). Just good content.
Dominic Tutino I have caught them in august before but there are never any guarantees this early. Follow salmonrivernewbie on Instagram for accurate reports.
I have a few. When I’m feeling fancy I’ll use the 8wt sage accel. When I’m going battle fishing I prefer using a 10wt big game fly rod by ugly stick. It’s cheap and I can put the pressure on a big fish around crowds without having to worry about breaking it. Tight lines
@@Handberrydea Thanks a lot man. A great friend of mine asked me to come with him on my first trip to the Salmon River. I was a little scared though. Heaviest rod I got is a 10ft 7wt. Thanks again! Gives me a lot more confidence.
The Straight floro rig still needs a swivel in order for it to be legal. Tight lines!

You need a swivel? So you’re saying you can’t just have one line with your splits right on it? Love the vid 👌🏽
Now that's the kind of video that is needed, not many go into those important details and specifics. It can make a first time fly fishing person look like they know what their doing, haha.
You should pick up a fly rod. You can fish a frog fly around those Lilly pads that you like to fish.
Good video, arrived in Watertown today, headed to mills, black river and salmon river over the weekend. Cheers mate !
Looking forward to this season. Great video with great tips.
True North Angler thanks man, it’s almost time!

Thanks for sharing. Going for the first time this year.
Nice, when are you going?
@@Handberrydea I have 1 weekend at the end of Sept, and another 2nd weekend in Oct. Bringing my 8wt fly rod.
John M the end of September should be real good. That’s when I’m going. October is always a safe bet too. Usually have steel around then
Question. Was the hook size 2, or 2/0?
John M size I’ve used both and they both work but 2/0 is a little bit larger. I prefer the size 2 especially if your going in October because it will increase your odds of getting a steelhead.

Never seen split shot put onto a Fly Line before...

Great video😊

Smithers Custom Baits I use 20 pound rio backing. The color comes down to personal preference.
