  • I head off to get the Fiat 500 service and have its annual check (MOT).
On 212,000 miles, and after 20,000 miles driven this past year, I was curious how solid the little Fiat could still be.

My 2013 Fiat 500 Sport has almost 300,000 miles with about 240,000 added in the past 6 years. Original engine and transmission. With regular maintenance and a few parts here and there (e.g., front wheel bearings, struts and shocks). It is a Great and reliable car - aside from the lousy South Korean tires that originally came with it. I upgraded twice and now have Pirellis so all is great now!

I was encouraged to see that your Fiat had covered over 212,000 miles and going strong ! It would appear that the days of FIAT standing for Fix It Again Tony have gone ! Cheers Neil from Thailand.

My Fiat 500 Lounge, 2012 model, has 110,000 miles on it. I put it up for sale and no-one bought it, the feedback being that it had too high mileage. Ha ha! Partly because of your experiences with your 500, I am keeping mine. At £35 per year road tax, and being a car I can largely maintain at home it is just makes sense to keep it.

Whilst on high mileage but motorcycles, my 1980 Suzuki GS1000s had covered over 367,000 Km‘s which in miles would be 230,000 when I sold her. Had to let her go due to her thirst.

A few years ago i bought a used 2011 Mini Cooper with about 90k miles on it. So far it's been running well with a few repairs and replacements. The great thing about it is that even here in the US where we use salt on the roads at every opportunity in winter, it has no rust...not even surface rust :P

That Defender you were stood by looked brilliant actually Freddie. Never judge a book by its cover because when you said you dreaded to think what it looked like underneath I smiled because what you hadn't noticed was that it had had a Galvanized rear crossmember which would indicate that it has probably had a replacement Galvanized chassis or half chassis which probably means that the underside is likely to be solid as a rock. There are only two things to really worry about with an older Defender and one is the Chassis and the other is the bulkhead that sits between the drivers compartment and the front wings. If both of those are good then everything else is fairly easily replaced or repaired.

The USA had the Mk1 Fiesta from 1978-1980. All were German built and had the 1.6 engine. I owned four different ones. The last one was essentially abandoned and I paid $65 US for it. Installed a new battery and just drove it. It rates as my favorite car in my 41 years of driving, and I've had BMWs, Audis and a few Ford Mustangs. Would love another but parts are completely impossible here.

I can relate, took my 2001 Fiat Bravo HGT in for a Warrant Of Fitness (New Zealand MOT equiv) and annual (at 280,000km) service this week. Passed no problems, just the usual oil/filter etc and another year ahead. It is still on the original drivetrain, even clutch, and used it on a 6,500km NZ tour last year. Only glitch was the airbag light came on but was a corroded pin connection and ok once cleaned/reset. A truck flung stone smashed the rh front fog light, $57 and available ex-stock from a local Fiat parts place.
Re small cars, had an 92 Uno 45s (the 1.0 litre FIRE engine) that did over 260,000km with zero out of the ordinary maintenance. My daily is a 'new', in comparison, 2011 Abarth 500 Esseesse. It is approaching 200,000km and I am hoping keeps up the same record. Has been ok, but had a few suspension mounts/bump stops and new shocks plus the airbag module died, but it wasn't too expensive. So much for the unreliable expensive to repair Italian vehicle stereotype...

I took my partners fiat for a service and it broke down on the way home. I insisted we serviced it as she’d not even checked the oil in 3yrs (it was dry when i checked) so when it broke down ot was something to do with the coil pack. I spent just under £1k on a mega service, disks and pads, cam belt, coil pack, spark plugs, new tyre and mot plus the basic service bits too. Can’t believe it broke down and now she’s lost faith in the car

I have had several petrol cars with 200k on. My father was a garage owner. Told me not to waste money on cars. All were tired but ran fine. Ithink if maintained they are capable of doing it. My vw t4 2.4d ( no turbo) was sold at 330000 miles and was a 93 reg and if I check on mot history is still going now at 412000. Guy bought it o convert as camper. Also at 330000 it ran beautifully. We are in a throw away society. More and more people won’t service their cars due to ridiculous costs per hour. My dads throw away was change the oil. My petrol berlingo is well over 100k runs lovely and a petrol vitara with 120000 on. My father taught me basic mechanics so I can do brakes, cam belts, servicing, valves but wont at my age grovel on floor doing clutches. It has saved me and my daughters 000s £ over the 48 yrs of driving. I am keeping my simple cars so I can mend them. I ride a vstrom 650 known for their reliability. In the 70s fiats rotted off their chassis but mechanically they were great especially their engines

1.4L or below? That's unheard of in north America, but we almost never we drive small city cars. A sedan is as small as you can practically use. I had a 2.3L sedan and that was the smallest size engine offered! Just looked up the engine sizes offered in the corolla, camry, and civic, all above 1.4 again! I think those sized engines are too small for our highway systems and speeds. We have highways in the west that reach 80mph!

I find it interesting these days that £220 is regarded as “good value” for an MoT and service and £6.99 is also regarded as “good value” for an English Breakfast. The MoT is certainly cheaper than one might expect of a high mileage vehicle. Perhaps we have all been “brainwashed” and these prices “Normalised”.

Freddie, as a previous Defender owner, I would say the reliability people talk about is normally down to bad maintenance.
I had mine for 6 years and had some great adventures in it, all over Europe, North Africa, and the whole of the British Isles.
When I sold it, the speedo was showing 346,000 miles.
That said, as I'm not particularly mechanical minded over the 6 years of ownership, I was paying out around £2- £3k a year to my local independent LR garage.
Overlanding takes its toll on most parts, sand in the electrics and wear and tear on the suspension, steering and brakes etc.
Unless you're good with spanners or have deep pockets, I couldn't recommend one. Especially if you plan to do 20,000 miles a year.
I now own an old Freelander one, and carried on using it for camping and Overland travel.
They have a bit of a hairdressers rep but everything works as it should and the maintenence bill is a fraction of what the Defender cost per annum.
Recently I've gone back to adventuring on two wheels and I'm loving the challenges that come with it.

On our trips to North Africa, we had a 1985 ex military 110 a 130 ex Dakar support vehicle a 110 utility and a Vauxhall Frontera the Vauxhall performed brilliantly but did suffer with 2 wrecked shock absorbers on the first trip but were updated for later trips.
I did use a Discovery 2 on one trip which also worked brilliantly. The only downside was the traction control overheated on a long climb with a steep decent after, but nothing dangerous.

Highest mileage on a small displacement car? I don't have anything under 1.4l I do have a 1967 C20 (3/4 ton) Chevrolet Truck that has apx 440,000 miles on it. granted it's not the original engine, brakes, transmission or rear axle. The current Power plant is a 350cu (5.7L) v8 that I personally put about 90,000 miles on over the last 10 years. 330,000 Miles on a 1985 Ford F250 with a 5.8L V8, and 316,000 miles on a 1985 Ford Mustang with a 5.0L V8. I drive commercially for a living so my yearly mileage is between 80,000-120,000 a year on all vehicles that I drive. Generally all of those miles are in the same area, Northern Utah-Southern Idaho, Eastern Nevada, and Western Wyoming. I help build and maintain the roads out here.

Good news on the gasket front, it's a sad indictment on Triumph that it's taken this long to source a simple service item for a bike that has only been out of production for 7 years, it's not like they didn't sell a bucket load of the air cooled Bonneville's since 2001.
