  • This travelogue features the approximately eight hundred square miled Cape Breton Island, which is separated from the mainland by about a mile, and which comprises the northeastern most section of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It is primarily rural but nonetheless still progressive in lifestyle. Despite many place names, including that of the island itself, coming from the French who initially settled it, the inhabitants are primarily Scottish by ethnicity, one such former resident being Alexander Graham Bell of telephone fame. The first stop is the Bras D'Or Lake (translated "arms of gold") - perhaps named due to the light of the setting sun off the water - and the neighboring town of Baddeck just outside of where Bell lived. The next stop is the scenic Margaree Valley through which the Cabot Trail traverses, the river one of the few in the province in which salmon spawn. Besides the primary economic activity of agriculture, the valley sports an active hook rug making cottage industry, the activity passed down from the French settlers. The final stop is Sydney, the largest city on the island and where the greatest industry of the island is concentrated. The city contains the largest self-contained steel plant in Canada, it which is supported by the island's thriving coal mining.

This was a random find in my “we think you may like” section. I’m not entirely sure why but here I am. Watching something I don’t know that I would have clicked on otherwise. You learn something new every day. Why not learn about things you didn’t know you cared to learn about?

First Nations people were the first people here. I’m the proud Scotchman. Just wanted to say that.

Does anyone know where the bridge featured at 7:30 is? I live in Cape Breton and have travelled a fair bit of (but by no means all of) it and it doesn't look familiar at all.

Could it be the Iona bridge? It looks much different now and the hills in the back are much more grown in! But it could be. Im from Inverness!

At the time of this filming, I doubt First Nation's were not given much thought. Hopefully we are more enlightened these days. My parents always taught us to be thankful for our "Home on Native Land". And to show respect for the First people who were here.
