    • @coryc9040
      @coryc9040 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Maybe. He is highly trained/practiced for memorizing the chess board and move sequences and was able to apply that here. I think if an average person spent hundreds of hours practicing they can achieve similar results (with memory, not chess). I say this after being pretty bad at memory games (I'm also horrible at chess) I could memorize the sequence of any shuffled deck of cards after only seeing each card once. It took learning some mnemonic techniques and a few dozen hours of practice. I think most people who perform feats like this are using special memory techniques either consciously or unconsciously and while talented people like Hikaru can master these techques faster, average people can achieve similar results with practice.

      He didnt though. That's how our memory works. You would've known this if you've memorized anything long in your life.
      Having played the piano I can tell that struggling to remember the pattern(the notes in this particular example) is a common thing when you're learning it. Your memory separates everything in bits to make it easier to store essentially. And sometimes you forget a little piece in the whole chain. When he remembered the little piece that fell out of his short term memory he spend some time remembering and when he did he continued to go with the script until he hit another little piece that fell out.

      @deidara_8598 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@takotime Working memory is key to being a good chess player. You have to be able to assess multiple threats, tactics, and ideas at once, all while calculating various lines. My thought was that since Hikaru is a good chimp, a chimp must be a good Hikaru, the neural patterns of chimps and skilled chess players are somewhat related. Of course, the caveat is having the abstraction to understand how a board game works, which is where I think chimps fall short, teaching them the rules would be extremely diffuclt, teching them princinples and openings even harder. But in the event that you _could,_ I believe chimps would completely outmatch their human counterparts

    • @TheInfectous
      @TheInfectous 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deidara_8598 In the event you could they would fall apart the second they would have to weigh the value of one play to another. They likely don't possess any ability to memorize lines long term in the first place, and they certainly possess zero ability to strategize in abstract ways.
      Also it's not like chimps are good at this game despite the study, the statistics on the sight prove the claim wrong, the large majority of humans get between 9-11 whereas the stated claim for chimps is "SOME chimps are able to get 9 digits 90% of the time"
      What chimps are particularly good at, is being shown digits for an extremely short period of time and working from that. In the short term, they have excellent memory. That has almost zero usefulness in chess, unless you're playing blind bullet chess lol.

    The difference between this and memorizing deep chess opening lines is that these squares are in a completely random order. At least memorizing opening lines there is some sort of abstract pattern or plan that you can follow. This is just simply pure randomness you have to memorize and figure out the patterns on your own.

    Working memory is one of the best predictors of chess ability. And this test measures working memory, so it's no surprise that Hikaru, one of the best chess players in the world, did so well.
    IQ, on the other hand, is surprisingly unrelated to chess ability, and that fits with Hikaru scoring near average on an IQ test.

I would spend between 4-7 minutes figuring out a pattern in my head to remember and once I got to 25 I just was mentally tired of trying to think of ways to group the number that I ended up throwing away 2 lives just rushing through my thought process. I couldn't image going past that point.
