- “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie, is set in Hollywood in the summer of 1969 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. Like any Tarantino movie, it’s filled with hidden references and homages to some of his favorite movies and TV shows. There are also a lot of Easter eggs that connect this movie with the rest of his filmography, from “Pulp Fiction” to “Kill Bill” to “Inglourious Basterds.”

I spotted one too. When at the playboy mansion Damien Lewis' character says that Sharon prefers men looking like 12-year-old boys. A reference I believe to a 13-year-old girl Polanski was accused.

Definitely badass! But not just that - he was also tragically frozen in his own life, and entirely dependent on Rick for work and human companionship. That kind of complexity makes him realistic and fascinating.

@@dgold6891 and... he was SUCH a good sport when being carted2 ambulance...his good words while he could have been bitching about various pains etc. Drugs & drink helped4 the scene & its truths. Him telling leo2 go stay w wife was class & his composure throughout entire flick & being prompt showed his great comradeship to leo. He never even got mad at him. He was his better half while being real cool & took all chores in stride. Leo's role was harder definitely w all the thicker lines he had2 do but Brad was macho owning every scene to a T.
You want him2 deliver & he did just like his dog did. I'll see it again & me reading up on all everyone's takes are doing same magic Jackie brown had...
christopher yasus Yup, Cliff was totally a good sport - which is even more heartbreaking, because the end of the movie gives you the impression that Rick’s life may be growing and maturing (getting in with successful Polanski/Tate/Sebring, plus having a new wife) while Cliff’s life can’t grow or mature. He is stuck, and haunted by that dead wife past.
D Gold I doubt that because he’s going to be known for saving Rich’s wife and getting shot in the process. He’ll probably be the first generation of celebrity body guards.
The most important thing I learned from this movie is to not cry in front of the Mexicans.

It's on a bus driving by in one of the scenes. But it's also been in his other movies. Resevoir Dogs has a cup with the name on it, and Dusk Til Dawn, Clooney brings it back to the motel for him and QT to eat before he kills the maid.
You missed the Kill Bill reference towards the end of the movie. In Kill Bill, Uma Thurmans character lies to break away from her assassins crew (3 females and 1 dude). In once upon a time in Holly Wood, Uma Thurman’s daughter lies to break away from the murderous crew involving 3 females and 1 dude.

Also in the end how one of the assassins goes blind because of Cliff throws dog food or something at her face and the way she runs and shouts around the house reminded me of the scene from Kill Bill vol 2 where Uma Thurman removes the eye of the assassin. Did anyone else feel the same?

Tarantino is a writer/director like no other. Probably the greatest of all time, he just does a fantastic job to deliver a great movie that often shows alternative endings to something that really happened. Love how he is so passionate about his work, and I’m honestly inspired by him and he made me interested in cinematography
Roman Polanski wears the same outfit to the playboy party as Django did for his first kill.

She had bought it for Roman before return to the US to give birth to her child. Tess was meant to have a message Roman should read between the lines.. If he carried on cheating on her, she might get tired of him.

I, like Quentin Tarantino, grew up in the 60s. The movie was nostalgic and fun. The ending was unexpected, but gratifying. I loved the movie. I left actually feeling happier.

my Grandmother grew up in the '60s so she didn't want to see it at 1st as she thought it was just on the Manson murders. 1 of her friends saw it and told her about it and it is one of her new favorite movies.

When Rick Dalton sits down in the saloon with the pilot episode's star, the actor eats stew from a large bowl with a huge wooden spoon. The spoon is obviously a reference to the opening scene in "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" when Lee Van Cleef eats stew with a giant wooden spoon.

When we get introduced to Rick and Cliff...we get a closeup of their shoes. Rick wears cowboy boots while Cliff wears moccasins. I think this might be a reference to Lone Ranger/Tonto. Later in the Spahn Ranch when Cliff enters the house...there's also a Lone Ranger poster on the wall.
Amazing that all these side details wouldn't be noticed by most people, yet they were definitely used as props for that purpose.
I always thought him wearing moccasins was a bit odd/out of character. For a stunt man, a regular boot offers way more protection than a moccasin and he'd carry that on into his real life because he's practical (eating mac n cheese out of a pot rather than putting it in a bowel). I figured maybe he was just trying to be more fashionable with the times rather than rick whose stuck in the past.

The whole character is supposed to be a tie-in to IB, WWII vet and retired Green Beret.
Rick's comment is also a nod to 60's acting legend; Audie Murphy! QT's tip of the hat, to alot of western stars yet again.
Leo should get an oscar for this film. Brad was awesome too, very likable, but Leo's character had a certain complexity and Leo just nailed it. His character was so moving, but so funny too.
And definately Quentin should get an oscar as well!!

Growing up in LA and being same age as Quentin Tarantino I found this movie so amazingly delightful a real walk down memory lane. I loved the end of this move and so did my two sons who saw it with me, of course they are big Tarantino fans and always have question about my growing up in LA and hanging out in Hollywood.
Natalie , Cliff’s wife whom he may or may not have killed out at sea is clearly a reference to Natalie Wood who died in a mysterious circumstances on the ocean at Catalina.

Cliff's wife is credited as "Billie Booth". I think she is actually referring to her SISTER, Natalie. The way the line reads depends on the punctuation: (paraphrased):
"I should have listened to my sister:.... 'Natalie, he's a loser, she said."
"I should have listened to my sister, Natalie......'He's a loser, she said."
I think it's the latter...again because the character is called 'Billie' in the credits.
@@jpgiuliotti in one interview Brad Pitt said that he knew exactly what happened with Cliff's wife; but Cliff certainly didn't kill her. But he still didn't tell us what did happen to her; so for us it is still a mystery...
@@williamdaniel2827 the novel of Once upon a time in Hollywood does address the Cliff/Billie situation more clearly than the movie. When describing the differences Quentin described Cliff as similar to Robert Blake (do the math)

Just saw the movie...Tarantino did an excellent movie...felt like I was back in California in 1969. Heartfelt and emotional to see the real Sharon Tate in some of the scenes. Going to see it again!!

After making margaritas in the blender, he almost pours into a mason jar but stops and later is spared. Michael Madsen poured the margaritas into the mason jar in Kill Bill and wasn't so lucky. Also the focus on ice cubes in both scenes.
Did you guys catch the line about the spaghetti western director being Alfredo Marariti? Magariti, get it? One of the many times I burst out laughing during this great movie.
Plus same aluminum levered ice tray as used by Madsen in Kill Bill.

It tied in to the actual Tate murders considering neighbors said it was so quiet that night, you could hear ice rattle.
"Pussycat" is played by Andie McDowell's daughter. Kevin Smith's daughter Harley Quinn Smith also plays a Manson girl. Lena Dunham plays one of the lead Manson girls. Timothy Olyphant plays the new cowboy hero, which is fitting since he's mostly known for his work in the show Deadwood.
Also did the logo on the dog food cans remind anyone else of the old Courage Wolf and Insanity Wolf memes?
I've watched this movie maybe a dozen times. I was 15 in 69 and grew up in Southern California watching those TV shows and listening to the music and commercials of the era.
Seymour Presents was my favorite.
Your presentation added things that I wasn't aware of. I watched the movie with my 39 year old son and would pause the movie to explain the details of what we were watching. He even did the Bruce Lee howl during the fight scene before Mike Moh did.

You missed the fact that the Hero Car a 1966 Cadillac Coupe Deville is the same car and color combo as Mr.Blonde’s in Reservoir Dogs.

Inside the garage you may recall a '65 or 6 Cadillac hearse under a clear tarp too.

One connection that no one seems to have picked up on is the use of several songs by Paul Revere and the Raiders in the soundtrack.
The producer for these was none other than Terry Melcher whose rejection of Charles Manson's music ultimately led to the
targeting of Melcher's former residence which was then occupied by Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate.
Rick Daltons ice tray, blender and mason jar glass when he made his Margarita were the same that Bills brother Bud used in Kill Bill vol 2.
When all the signs are lighting up in the night, one of the signs says “Romeo and Juliette”. DiCaprio starred in a Romeo and Juliette movie.
In the library scene, Sharon Tate takes notice to a bird statuette. The statue is the Maltese Falcon from the famous noire movie "Maltese Falcon"
I read that DiCaprio bought the one used in the movie at an auction several years ago.

As the narrator is talking about the movies Rick did in Italy, before mentioning the one by Antonio Margheriti, there was one film Rick did which was directed by Floyd Ray Wilson.
Floyd Ray Wilson was the name of the boxer that Butch fought (and accidentally killed) in Pulp Fiction.

My father was a cop/bailbondsman/detective in the 60's and 70's. He bailed out Dennis Wilson more than once. I read "Helter Skelter" by Bugliosi when I was a kid. They were wearing the exact clothes in that last scene that they were all killed in. Had chills.
Still amazes me that you’re never just watching a QT movie, there’s always so much more going on than meets the eye. The man is a genius.

Great video! One thing you missed - like the fight between Bruce Lee and Cliff being based on the real life scuffle between Bruce Lee and legendary stuntman Gene LeBell, the incident with Cliff at Spahn Ranch is based on an actual event that happened to Clayton Moore, the actor who played the Lone Ranger (as described in his autobiography "Who Was That Masked Man?"). Moore was near the Spahn Ranch and decided to drop in and see his old friend Shorty. As in the film, Moore was shocked to see Shorty blind in his bedroom and being serviced by Squeaky Frohm. Moore said one of his big regrets was that he never reported the incident to the authorities.
The movie was so detailed, I'm surprised that Steven Parent, the first Cielo Drive victim wasn't portrayed... even though he was just basically in the wrong place at the wrong time.... but it would've been cool if the movie had shown Parent driving in or out of the gate in the background just before Tex, Katie, and Sadie showed up!
@klmullins65 I like to think that since he was clearly such a hard working kid, that in this universe, rather than visiting Garretson that night he took a much deserved break instead. Just went home and fell asleep.
@@johng6565 I think Tarentino should have had Parent spot Cliff in the street, and stop and ask him if HE wanted to buy the clock radio he was trying to sale Garretson, and Cliff decides he does want to buy it, and Steven drives on home, as there's no need to go visit Garretson anymore

I remember seeing a police photo of Parent slumped over in the front seat of his car. Either he was shot before he could get out or he tried to get back in and escape. Just another "wrong place at the wrong time" scenario. Sad.

The album they play, Paul Revere etc, was produced by Terry Melcher, who was the former renter of the Tate house and knew Manson.
And Melcher's roommate was Mark Lindsay, lead singer of Paul Revere, etc.
If only Terry had given Manson a small record deal..

Thats who Manson was truly after, as Terry declined on turning the tape Manson made of himself singing, down!! That really pissed Manson off. Manson had made friends with dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys when they crashed at his place for a bit!! Dennis asked Terry to give it a listen.

It's got a different beat. Like after Pulp Fiction, I was initially disappointed with Jackie Brown, but then grew to love it

I loved the movie, it was great.
The ending was so amazing after dredding it for the entire watch. To see those creeps go into the wrong house and get justice was great and I was relieved I didn't have to watch what I thought/knew was going to happen. pretty genius of Tarantino if you ask me.
The song rick is listening to on the radio, in climactic scene while Manson's cult break into Rick's house, rick is in the pool listening to the radio with headphones on.
The song has lyrics to the effect of "the 8 that fight and 8 that died" seems like a reference to the hateful eight as all 8 main characters died.

It was a superb recreation set. I admire these set designers and everyone who can make these incredible time period pieces, everything from the clothing, the exact replication of the smallest of details. That's all this was. a 2 hour standing ovation to set designers, to gaffers, to artists, painter, to the clothing people, to those who scanned and catalogued magazines and film and photos of that year.
Bravo.
There is no point or purpose to anything else other than some sort of 'filler movie story' to model the clothes, sets and retro art.

At the end when Sharon talks to Rick via voice intercom outside her house gave me Pulp Fiction vibes when Mia was talking to Vincent via intercom in her home.

You missed a great reality tie-in Tarantino included with the Manson family members approaching the Tate property. Maya Hawke, though credited as “Flower Child” is actually supposed to represent Linda Kasabian. In reality, Linda was left outside by the killers and approached the house when she heard screaming, witnessed two of the victims being attacked on the front lawn, and after shrieking to the killers to stop the bloodshed (they ignored her), then ran back to the car in a panic.
Kasabian would go on to be the prosecution’s chief witness against the killers at trial.
Tarantino’s treatment of her actions in the scene are a definite “fantasy mixed with reality” throwback. Also plays off the “what if” wish fulfillment of the re-imagined ending. Kasabian herself said when she ran back to the car she considered driving away to get help but was too afraid.
There’s a scene where Leo DiCaprio is riding a Pan Am airplane in 1969. Felt like an unintended reference to catch me if you can

In the movie Tarantino also included a reference to Dennis Hopper, who directed Easy Rider which came out in 1969

In Charlie's scene, he asks if Terry is around, a reference to producer Terry Melcher (Doris Day's son) who Manson met at the house through Dennis Wilson. I'm familiar with a lot of the history from back then, still, I may go see the movie again after watching this video.

Part of that scene is true. Charlie did go to that house at least once looking for Terry. When he arrived at the guest house, the owner, Altobelli, told Manson to leave the people in the main house alone. He should have.
I saw this movie at the Cinerama, everyone clapped when it was shown!
Occasionally, I go to an old theater in my city where they show older classic films. The audience is usually made up mostly of older people who surely saw the films before. They always stay until the end of the movie, and applaud while the credits roll.

When the little girl(actress) was reading that book about Walt disney being a genius, i think Tarantino was being sarcastic about that, like an F.U. to Disney.. remember when disney bumped off his movie(hateful 8) from the cinerama dome theater to play their star wars?.. he was really upset about that.

I guess I am the only person who noticed, but after they shot the scenes for Lancer, you saw someone reading a TV Guide with Andrew Duggan on the cover. Andrew Duggan played Murdock Lancer, Scott & Johnny’s father.
In the movie cut there is no indication that Johnny Madrid is related to Scott Lancer, and says that he doesn't like Lancer and the way he operates.....; but in the discarded scene (available on the dvd), Johnny and Scott are both sons of the Old Man Lancer.....and Marybella is their younger sister. The Boston brother arrives back from the East, he says, 'I didn't know my mother had any other children.' Madrid replies, "No, but our father did.'
Later in the movie the sunglasses Cliff puts on look like the same ones he wore in Fight Club; This would've been done on purpose because that's one of Brads most iconic characters which the audience can enjoy. The movie talks about how a tv character is always pigeonholed to one particular character so no matter what the show or movie, the audience will always think of him as that character. So I think it was done on purpose for the audience to see Brad as Tyler durden and reminisce. The movie is obviously meant to be meta anyway so; it was a great film overall!

I loved how deliberately campy and crazily brutal the fight between Cliff and the intruding hippies went. Dreamy, wishful thinking, boldly larger than life. So good it couldn't be real and, therefore, regrettably sad.
I was surprised he was able to fight so well after a night of drinking and a dose of acid. I thought the movie was setting up for it working out entirely wrong for them. That said, great dog.

Good to see the shout-out to Gary Kent as an inspiration for Brad Pitt's stuntman character. Kent was working at Spahn Ranch on an Al Adamson film and hired Charles Manson to fix fellow stuntman Bud Cardos' dune buggy. Manson only did it after Kent told him Cardos would kick his ass if Mason didn't finish the job. A quick pan in the Spahn Ranch scene shows a dune buggy off to the side. Tarantino pays so much attention to detail and he goes so deep to make it seem like this movie really took place in an alternate 1969. But it has so many real occurrences that he changed for the movie. I thought it was awesome definitely a top 3 Tarantino movie for me

The quick scene of Cliff on the boat alone with his wife showing her by the water and him aiming the harpoon at her and cutting away hints that he killed her. But that could be in reference to Robert Wagner and Natlie Wood since he was with her when she mysteriously drowned. Especially her being huge during this time even though the "murder" was in 81.
While there were plenty of barefoot scenes, a QT staple, one that was semi-missing was a car trunk scene. While Brad Pitt's character does open it to get the spare tire out, it's not shot from the vantage point of being inside the trunk.
In James Stacy's last scene, ( played by Timothy Olyphant ) he's seen riding off on a motorcycle. In 1973 he lost an arm, and a leg in a motorcycle accident.

Saw the movie today. I wasn't expecting pulp, dogs, unchained or Jackie. But I was expecting Tarintino and that's what I got....Won't go into much detail because to each their own. But sitting here at just a little past 11 PM west coast time on 8/9/19. I just realized (stoned and a little drunk) that me and my lady watched this great flick on the exact day of what REALLY happened. I knew of what happened being born and raised in L.A. but it didn't click until a few minutes ago. Trippy shit man.

I found this movie a bit erratic and confusing, but I didn't know this history or reference it was drawing upon, so thank you for this, it makes a lot more sense now.
One of the theaters was playing the 1968 Romeo and Juliet. Its ironic because Olivia Hussey who plays Juliet actually moved into Sharon Tate’s house after the murders. When people asked her why she would move in she said “In England most of the houses have horrible memories. All I felt was Sharon’s vibration. In the fight scene between Cliff and Clem at the ranch, Cliff punches Clem so hard that it knocks him off his feet in exactly the same way that Mickey (Brad Pitt) from Snatch got knocked off his feet in that boxing match scene in Snatch where Mickey was was supposed to throw the match. It was one of the slow motion iconic shot in Snatch so really easy to remember or google if you need to.

Pretty cool Tarintino named the beer after one of his local towns he grew up close to being Chattanooga Tennessee, also being that Tarintino is from Knoxville Tennessee just an hour or so North of Chattanooga “the scenic city!” I’m a Chattannoga native and love these cool facts.
You missed the "Sock it to me" button worn at the stylist wagon by the young stylist. It refers to the comedy-defining 1968 show Laugh-In. There was a Netflix special on it, otherwise I'd have never heard of that either.
In the scene where Brad and Leo are at the restaurant in Italy talking about what’s next for them in America, they are both wearing the same brown shirt with laces on the collar that Manson is seen wearing in one of the photos of his arrest.

Love this movie! I grew up in L.A. during the 60’s and 70’s. They really captured the 1969 mood. One thing - Neil Diamond’s “Hot August Nights” didn’t come out until 1972. Nevertheless, it works in this movie.
Julia Benham I love it too! I can see why Sharon Tate's sister loved it also. Sure would have been wonderful if a real fairy tale had occurred. Still glad the real murders were not done. Also, I loved that Mannix was on tv. Use to love that show.
Another interesting side-bar, the Cielo house address, is directly below the Lautner house (above, in real life) where the Dude Lebowski meets Jackie Treehorn. Despite the Cohen brothers making it seem like Treehorn's beach house is in Malibu, the actual triangular mansion literally over-looks the Melchor (Polanski, now Jeff Franklin) property.
