What is a Food Co-op?

As our group explored the possibility of a Co-Op grocery store as a step toward increasing food access in West Louisville, we thought it would be important to make an informational video that effectively communicates accurate information that is worthwhile to community members and future owners of a food co-op.
We know that there is limited familiarity with Food Co-Ops in West Louisville, and the first step in forming a Food Co-Op requires the community it will affect to rally behind the business and provide unwavering commitment to its opening.
Co-Ops have recently been appropriated as a fad in wealthy neighborhoods, but historically, a wide variety of co-ops were started by black communities across the United States as a creative way to combat setbacks in their communities during segregation. While there is not an operational food co-op in West Louisville, we do not think that this is a new concept to the community as a whole.
We hope that this video will be informative for community members who want to know more about this potential business model, and that this video will highlight the powerful community that West Louisville already has and the ways in which it can be leveraged to help resolve some of their most pressing issues centered on food insecurity.

The job of the Board of Directors is to execute the will of the membership. So, the best question one can ask the Board is, "do you know what the will of the owners is?"
