    I have 3 508T's that are a few years old and have been perfect from day one with thousands of rounds through them. I just recently purchased another 508T along with an EPS and an EPS carry for 3 other pistols. The EPS carry is direct mount on a 365XL and its no where even close to zeroed. I actually had to add 4 layers of tape under the front to get it where it needed to be. Next the new 508T which is on a shadow 2 compact using a Impact Machine plate is 3 inches low POI VS POA with the elevation maxed out. Sadly I shipped the full size EPS along with my DWX compact to Impact Machine for slide milling and mounting so no telling how that will turn out. As of right now 2 of the 3 new Holosun optics are getting returned, hopefully it wont be 3. Ive been a Holosun fan boy but that may now change. Everyone has a dud now and then but what I just dealt with over the last week is possible reason to change my way of thinking.

    Thank you for this vid. I’m still going to chance it with Holosun due to their pricing, however, I’m going to do it through either Brownells or Amazon since they have good return policies. I’m leaning towards the 509T since it’s fully enclosed. Also, it would have been cool if you held your optic close up to the camera so we could better see the canted reticle.

    Wow. Sounds like you got a lemon, dude. Your ordeal is pretty incredible. I can only speak from my sample size of one: recently got a 508T (had it for about 3-4 weeks now) and the reticle is perfectly aligned- -- super sharp, crisp with very clear glass. I would also add that the build quality, fit and finish are on par (if not better) than my Trijicon RMRs and Eotechs. Came back from a 2 day training course and it performed flawlessly (so far- knock wood). Hope you get yours sorted.

    I very recently purchased the 508T-GR X2 Series, from Brownells as well. Upon watching this video I took out my unit out of the box to see if mine suffers from the same problem. I was pleasantly surprised that the hash marks that are off for you happen to be exactly true, vertical or horizontal, i.e. exactly on the spot at the 3, 6, 9, 12 positions. Maybe I lucked out, perhaps some units are less perfect than others. I am hoping the hash marks will stay as they are after mounting the sight and using the gun. On the other hand, one small area the black anodizing did not properly cover the Titanium frame, but is small enough and not really noticeable that I am willing to live with it. I guess that's what you get for the lower price than the Trijicon.

    I have a astigmatism and I have at least 5 Holosun products. That said there is a fairly new company called Swamp fox, Liberty RMR
    .The red dot is really crisp and I do not have the starburst effect as with the Holosun. I have been using it on my Glock and as of this date no problems. Another great benefit is their 30% off the price if you register with their web site. It has the same benefits as the 507C 2X with the exception of the solar capabilities.

  • @shaocaholica
    @shaocaholica 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    You can easily measure this by placing the optic on a level surface and look at a target that's has a long vertical or horizontal line(s) that's also level like a plumb bob or just a paper target that's been leveled. Scope installers do this all the time with magnified optics. You can take a photo and show to Holosun you are measuring X degrees off axis and get a proper replacement. I mean you shouldn't ideally have to do that but if you can you should.

    • @graycattactical1614
      @graycattactical1614  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea, thanks for sharing. I ended up getting the refund from Brownells, but if I do buy another Holosun and run into this issue again, I'll give it a try. Any tips on getting the camera to focus properly? I'd imagine it might be a struggle to bring both the reticle and target into focus in the same shot

    • @shaocaholica
      @shaocaholica 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@graycattactical1614 Actually the reticle is set to focus pretty far out due to the nature of the collimated lens so your eyes can see it against a target. So the same applies for a camera as well. What will be out of focus is the optic housing itself just like how it would be when you look through it with your eyes. I wouldn't try to do this on a live range. Doing it in your garage or driveway would be much easier.

  • @XSpector88

    I recently had to return 3 508s. One had terrible lens coating and there was something wrong with the emitter. The second had material missing around the battery housing that looked like something went wrong in the casting process and the glass looked like a funhouse mirror. The third had the emitter lens crack after 80 rounds of 9mm. It's clear to me the move to use titanium, while it may be more durable, is causing a lot of manufacturing problems as it is inherently more difficult to both cast and machine. Not to mention more expensive. Which is why I would theorize that Holosun is possibly selling QC rejects/refurbs to retailers to avoid taking massive losses since this seems to be priced well below what one would expect it to cost given these challenges. I can't imagine a world where a Trijicon pistol optic made of titanium wouldn't cost around $1000 or more, which is probably why they've stuck with forged aluminum given it has proven to be plenty durable.

    • @graycattactical1614
      @graycattactical1614  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have some manufacturing/engineering experience and I can confirm that the price difference between Al and Ti is significant. That said, total material cost for either in the size of an optic is just a tiny fraction of their price.
      Your experience seems to be par for the course unfortunately. Whatever the case may be, I really hope they improve QC quickly. If not, trijicon may no longer have the competition to drive their innovation.

      Glad to hear yours is going strong! My understanding of astigmatism is that it affects each of us slightly differently. Two people with the same prescription may still see a different image when viewing that target/dot through the objective lens. If you've found a setup that works well for you, that's all you can ask for!

    Anecdotally, I haven't seen any Holosun pistol dots with canted reticles. Granted, everyone I know who runs one just uses the regular dot reticle. I have, however, had to RMA a Holosun ACSS Rifle dot with a reticle that was easily 5+ degrees canted, though this was a couple years ago.

    Holosun introduced this problem in design by adding the four tiny hash lines at 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00. Without those, any reticles rotated "out of tolerance" would be a non-issue.

    I just received mine from Amazon and it was tilted to the left by about 2 degrees. I called Holosun and they confirmed that 2 degrees tilt is within normal limits. So I returned it to Amazon and ordered a new one. Fortunately, the second one is dead on straight, so the good news is you can order again and hope for a good one. I agree that Holosun should not be allowing this though. Reflects poorly on them.

      For parts that don't need long term abrasion resistance, cerakote might be the way to go. Not sure if they're using nitride, black oxide, etc. but many of those "coatings" work by increasing the metal's affinity for oil. When you oil the parts they hold onto that oil. Cerakote is like paint but a bit more resilient. It can wear away if it's constantly hitting/rubbing other hard surfaces, but it actually creates a barrier on top of the metal to protect from moisture.
