Different renderers have their own workflows, for example: Arnold uses AOVs and can make a direct specular and indirect specular AOV, mentalray used render elements and can make a reflection element. The terminology and the way to create them are different, but the way to stack the images in 'Add' mode is still the same. Ultimately you need to build up your knowledge with specific renderers by using them, experimenting, succeeding and failing with them!
