I wrote a fan letter to Brother Theodore back in 80s . He wrote me giving me his home phone number and offer of free tickets to his show(I believe it was 13th St Theater) if I ever got out to NYC. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised but unfortunately never got out there. Thank you for this amazing compilation Don!

I ran into him on the subway in c. 1986/87. He was getting out on W. 72nd St. I told him simply that I enjoyed his talent. He smiled and responded with a very gracious “Thank you.” A far cry from his stage persona.

Thank you for such a comprehensive and technically clean archive! Theodore's high-wire act of sanity dancing on the head of a pin is deserving our remembrance. And then there are Dave's disarming quips to offset Theodore's rants that blow me away. He was always Dave's best guest!

I saw Brother Theodore live in a theater in NY in 1984. It was a memorable night; he's just like he is on Letterman except darker, angrier, and scarier.

Can you imagine how scary it was before the Letterman appearances started giving it a clearer 'comedy' label and brought in ironic hipsters who felt like they were in on the joke? 11 pm or whatever in a dingy 60 seat theater and this beast unravels in your face? I would've been gripping the arm rest hard.

I always thought that Letterman enjoyed having Brother Theodore because he was simply the most challenging guest to make comedy with, and Letterman knew he could say anything in response because that fed directly into Brother Theodore's act.

God, I miss finishing my day with David Letterman! I wish he had some podcast thing going on... I'd be watching like back in the days. I know, I know... None of us are getting any younger but I do miss him terribly. He's been often the only thing to offer me a well-needed respite and a smile/laughter after a long day. We were lucky to have him! *sighs*

Brother Theodore and Larry “Bud” Melman were the best of David Letterman’s featured performers. The beloved quirkiness of Dave’s humor was a perfect platform for those two regularly featured members of the Late Night show family. It’s a tribute to Letterman’s brilliance and kindheartedness for him to have the foresight to give these two men a chance to become iconic successful parts of our culture in the later years of their lives. I don’t think any other TV host would be so daring to make Theodore and Larry Bud an ongoing part of the show.
