      Dr. Ian Ellis-Jones,
I was 37 in 1983 and I had begun to attend Marble Collegiate Church in 1977 -- I stayed 32 years! For sure I was sitting in the main sanctuary that day as I lived a few blocks away and once I discovered Dr. Peale I never missed an occasion to hear him. Once when viewing a video of a sermon of Dr. Peale's as the camera scanned he congregation there I was as a 32-year old.
One thing I take exception to in Dr. Peale's sermon was that he said that "any church" would do to help create a sense of happiness -- SO untrue. Marble Collegiate Church was an incredible place that provided a level of kindness and support that is often totally missing in other churches that are "top down" institutions with an inferior egotist in the pulpit. I live in a western city now and been to 12 churches and none of them is anywhere the "laboratory of personal growth" that Marble Collegiate Church was. I feel blessed to have met Dr. Peale and the kind, intelligent and developed staff that ran the church -- it changed my life and helped me to build my life.

I know Dr Norman Vincent Peale because Steve Harvey recommended his book The Power of Positive Thinking. I have read this book twice and has shifted my mindset and thinking. Thank you Dr Peale

Wikipedia rips this guy a new one. Sighting people in the psychiatric field that said his book power of positive thinking is damaging and dangerous. I read one criticism and it sounds very unfounded and assumptive. Wik isn't putting the other side of the argument. I wonder why? 🤔

Growing up in the 70s, Mom would have Norman Vincent Peale on the radio Sunday nights. I think it was WOR.... listening to him back in those days probably built my foundation for a positive thinker. And. love his humor in his sermons.

Thank you for sharing that. Sadly, and annoyingly, there are so many so-called Christians who attack Dr Peale, now no longer able to defend himself, and his message. Those who truly listened to the man, and who read his many books (and not just one or two of them), know that he was truly a man of God who preached the Word of God. I heard him speak in Sydney, Australia, where I live, twice. I was so impressed. It would have been wonderful to have attended his church when he was the senior minister there. I have attended services at Marble Collegiate when I was in New York several years ago but Dr Peale had passed on by then. I have been to Quaker Hill Cemetery, Pawling, New York and paid my respects to Dr Peale.

He was a minister of the Gospel who preached the Gospel. I firmly believe that. He was a conservative evangelical who believed it was his mission from God not to use the traditional language and thoughtforms of evangelical Christianity.
