Do you ever stop to think about how a particular building or objects makes you feel? Few of us do, yet every single day we inhabit multiple places; streets, buildings, offices, homes and public transport that Thomas Heatherwick says are having devastating consequences on our lives.
Thomas Heatherwick is one of the world's leading designers and one of Britain’s greatest creative talents. Responsible for some of the world's most iconic buildings and spaces, he was once described by the late Sir Terence Conran as "the Leonardo da Vinci of our times".
Thomas Heatherwick is unusually unapologetic in his thoughts and his actions and has never shied away from controversy - criticism he welcomes. Growing up in a bohemian family, his childhood experiences are evident throughout his work and his studio, which has won a global reputation for seamlessly merging engineering with design and architecture.

Hello everyone, if you enjoy this episode, please buy Thomas' amazing new book *Humanise: A Maker’s Guide to Building Our World* which is available from all good bookstores and online sellers.
Pearl and Thomas have such a nice vibe, I’d love to sit in a room and just chat with them for hours.
I usually watch Pearl’s podcasts because they’re interesting conversations between two women in the art world. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy a male guest, but I was pleasantly surprised! Thomas seems like a great guy and you two had amazing chemistry in your conversation, I could listen for hours.
I’ve become a fan or Pearl Lam and I’m delighted to finally see her giving more in this video, she is just as interesting as her guests and a great role model for women.
This podcast is becoming my favourite podcast.
That debate on public art was so interesting. Compelling points by both sides. This was a good episode. Pearl’s views on institutional political economy added good value.
Pearl Lam’s interviews are always so interesting
Pearl wants artworks to be the main focus in buildings and Thomas wants the building to be the main focus. Why can’t we have both! The more art the better I think ;)
Finally, a meaningful dialogue on architecture as an art form.
Now that’s a real conversation. Loved every minute of it.
More power to you Pearl. Please keep them coming.
I’ve sent this video to my friend, we love discovering interesting podcasts online!
As an aspiring architect, I want to thank you for this conversation.
There is something about the power of ideas - when one shares it, it inspires a person.
This is a must watch episode for all architects.
I feel like Pearl has a way with words, her and her podcast guest always end up having the most relevant and insightful conversations. Can’t wait for the next episode!
I am going to have to watch this more than once to absorb everything. Some really great content in here.
Thomas Heatherwick is much younger than I expected. I knew about him because of The Cauldron at the 2012 Olympics. That was an amazing piece of design. Thank you Pearl Lam for this video. A great host who actually listens.
Public art is great, I love it. But Thomas makes a good point. It makes more sense to make the buildings that we occupy pleasant and well designed.
I never thought to link up art and architecture before but now I can see how buildings should be thought of as art forms! Good on you guys!
They both champion creativity, either in art or architecture, so cool!
I remember reading something about Thomas a couple of years back, he’s a really good guy with fantastic morals.
I’ve watched all of these videos about black history art, other day about culinary art, and today architecture. Pearl Lam I salute you!
“Buildings have a nutritional value for minds” Love how Thomas is able to relate a city’s architectural landscape to mental health. I think that is very true.
Yesss, can’t wait for new episodes of your podcast Pearl.
This podcast would not rate low on the boringometer! Smashed it once again Pearl.
Not many podcasts focus on such important and diverse topics. Pearl is really great in her choices - in her art and in people.
That’s some really good advice for younger listeners Thomas. I wish I’d heard that when I was young and wanting a creative career.
Now that’s a podcast worth watching.
I can’t believe I just sat and watched this whole one hour video when I thought I’d stay for 2 mins!
I feel like Pearl knows about every topic... art, architecture, fashion… you name it she knows it!
I haven’t thought much about buildings before, I’m gonna start paying attention after watching this.
This podcast is so chilled.
I agree that we need more data that shows how people feel about the buildings being built. I want more buildings to be givers rather than takers!
Pearl, I salute you for bringing up mental health in conversation, it’s something that’s not talked about enough. Thomas made some really good points too.
This podcast is getting better and better with each episode. I am so happy to have come across this.
I love Pearl’s hair and style, she looks so well put together in all of her pics and videos
Gotta subscribe this podcast. Getting better and better.
I love the separation of the words decoration and decorative guys, really is food for thought!
I love this episode. Also Pearl is looking so cool.
Im a design student and Thomas is a big inspiration
This makes me want to read Thomas’ book, sounds so interesting.
I’ve only ever thought about buildings as ugly or beautiful before. It’s really interesting to see this in a new light, thanks Pearl and Thomas.
Pearl is such a good advocate for being anti-Western colonisation of culture. I’m Asian and definitely agree that we need to start appreciating our own culture more instead of just copying the West.
“What he wrote advocated mass boredom” hahaha- Thomas is great and he makes some really good points. As does Pearl.
I was googling him - man, his work is awesome.
I really think good architecture brings a lot more joy and pleasure and pride to more people than art ever can. Its a shame designers are so limited by commercial factors.
I always feel architecture is undermined in the art scene of the world. I also feel it is one of the most important art form. After all, we are exposed to buildings and city landscape the most. Surely it has an impact on our lives.
Next time I get on the iconic London bus, I am going to be thinking of Thomas and Pearl. Haha.
That was a stimulating conversation.
Pearl asks the most interesting questions in her podcasts.
Pearl is an amazing conversationalist.
I love how Pearl has tried riding on the bus that Thomas designed!
Such an interesting watch and I agree with Thomas that a lot of buildings look the same these days.
No way, 76% of the public believe that buildings affect their mental health! I just thought I hated going into the office building cuz I hated work hahaha. But seriously, that’s a mad figure. Thanks for bringing it to attention Thomas.
Respect for making a hyper-accessible book Thomas. A lot of books use fancy language that makes them inaccessible to normal people.
I am changing my opinion about podcasts in general. I just hadn’t come across something that would interest me enough to sit down and listen for half an hour.
Thomas Heatherwick, ladies and gentlemen.
This is actually so true!! Most cities look the same these days it’s so sad :(
Thanks for making the lighting good on the new bus Thomas… hope my girlfriend thinks I look better now! lol
It’s really interesting how they speak about art and architecture as if they are one and the same.
AW congratulations on your twins Thomas, mine are due in two months!
Wow that’s interesting that you’ve been given more creative opportunities in Asia Thomas. They seem to be more accepting of individuality in the arts industry than we are in the West.
Routemaster! Awesome episode.
I mean is everyone missing out on how cool Pearl’s bracelet is?
Was waiting for the next episode.
I’ve heard the slogan form follows function before…. Thomas is right about emotion being a function
I want to be the next Thomas Heatherwick!!! :)
I would totally invite both of you for a dinner party, you’re both such interesting individuals!
Thomas Heatherwick designed the London bus? That’s amazing!
I agree Pearl, cities everywhere do look the same these days!
Hey Pearl, thought I would let you know I love your podcasts. Who’s next now?
I feel like Pearl and Thomas should collaborate to create a really cool artistic building.
Its interesting how Pearl is able to keep the dialogue ongoing on art through her podcast.
I am headed to Sussex today, gotta check out that cool café by him.
I also wish I could study inventing, Thomas!
Yes for buildings with more character.
I agree with Thomas. Public art is just a bit sad. Especially when surrounded by bad architecture.
This makes me want to become an architect.
Thinking of it today, his building at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore it does evoke emotions.
I absolutely agree with Heatherwick's point of view, and I have been a long admirer of his work. The only thing that bugs me about his campaign is him not citing the references he used. Reading his book, I find a lot of ideas are very similar to what people like Ruskin, Christopher Alexander, E.F. Schumacher, have said before him. It would have inserted him into this legacy of thinkers which I'm sure he's aware of, and would've given his campaign much more steam. whereas now, I feel like it risks appearing like a self promotion stunt.
I definitely prefer complexity when it comes to buildings.
I agree with Thomas that its super odd that decorating streets is acceptable but decorating buildings isn’t.
I am sad the episode is over.
“We are imaginative when provoked”.
love
AI is making stellar strides in all fields. It has even started giving buildings points.
Architects voted that the opinions of the public don’t matter!!?!?! I wish that had been explored more in this video.
Have you seen his rolling bridge in Paddington? It is so cool.
I think that a big factor in why buildings look so similar these days is defo the budget... I wonder if anything can be done about this?
Buildings tell us so much about ourselves but recently they’ve stopped telling their story.
Just googled his 1000 Trees project in Shanghai. It is mind blowing yet so simple. Take a look.
I want to be on your podcast Pearl, sign me up!
Wow! Where did that one hour go?
When’s the next episode. Can’t wait.
When is the 1,000 trees going to be complete?
Can I ask one thing? What is Thomas’s obsession with spikes and protruding things? Just joking - great fan of your work man.
Can anyone identify where Pear’s silver bangled come from? Google image search can’t seem to find them.
He build his first building at 21? I wish Pearl ha d asked him more about that. How did he get to build a building at such a young age?
Wow, I didn’t know that the Tower of London has been a zoo and a jail.
