    Hearing and seeing a Univox brings back my high school days when I worked in a music store in North Bend,Oregon that was a Univox dealer.I'd worked there from 1968 until 1970.Univox made a good copy of a Les Paul back in the early '70s.I was 17 back in 1968.I used to do my own electrical work on my guitars later on.

    We, the Peoples Bass Liberation Front hereby announce that All Your Bass Are Belong To Us !
    We require more Bass, so any Bass that is not being spanked hard will be assimilated but any Bass that is getting a proper spanking will produce the necessary vibration that we require !
    Spank some Bass Davey boy !

    Dave, your videos help remind me of the way my father talks about his customers. To be fair, I worked for him for 10 years, so I'm not exactly a young one, myself. Keep up the great work!

    An experienced repair guy knows when to walk away because he already tried to solve those kind of problems before without success ! The time and work involved to untwist that neck outweighs the value of the guitar so unless it's your own and you have plenty of time and you really want to see how good you can make it then it's really not worth it.
    You could remove the fretboard then plane the neck flat, re-fit the truss rods and glue the fretboard back on etc but you are going to need to re-finish it too and where would that end ? For a luthier in training this could be a good project, it would certainly test their skills and give them some experience.

    I know how much Dave LOOOVES RIC basses. I own a 2015 model, and I can attest that much of what as annoying about the vintage ones has been remedied in the current models.

    I bought one of those Univox 4001 copies in the late 70's. I took the pickup cover off without destroying the system. I thought at the time, it was a great copy of the Rick. Ran the stereo cable to a 1-18 Peavey of some sort for the neck, and the bridge side to a Silver Fender Bassman 10. Very "Ricky" sound, or so I thought. Swapped it and $100 for a 66 Jazz Bass couple years later. Wonder who came out on that deal?

      Dang, nice. Hope you held on to that Jazz bass!

    That is quite a twist in there. It was probably induced by unequal forces in the two truss rods as you mentioned and is certainly not easily or quickly fixed. Might be a wall hanger.

    A somewhat older version of this same bass became my main bass for a while in the 80s I knew the Univox was older because it still had the Ric headstock that this one doesn't. I had a real 4003 and bought the Univox to be a backup for the Ric, Strangely in less than a month, the Univox had become my number one and the Ric was now the backup.

    Had a Univox Les Paul copy....Played better than any Epi, I'd kill to have that thing again. Really solid guitar for what it was. They were produced in a few different styles and made by a few different manufacturers, AIMS comes to mind also...

    Might be a long shot, but figured it's worth mentioning: Lace (yes, the pickup people) and a couple other manufacturers have designed basses with purposely twisted necks like that and it actually works quite well. You may still be able to get this in playable shape because of the way it's twisted. Obviously not something you'd want to spent loads of time on, but might be worth checking out just to see if it's somewhat reasonable. Google "Lace Helix bass" to pull up more info.

  • @frankazack6701

    I had a 76 mapleglo Ric like that one & it suffered from bent truss rods because somebody didn't know how to adjust it properly.. lucky I was able to get it fixed & sell it.. at least the 4003's are adjusted the normal way

    • @frankazack6701
      @frankazack6701 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do remmeeber your "stickininthe backer" story....My 4003 has a rounded edge on the back side... more comfortable & I like the neck way better than the older 4001's.. but I still love my Fenders

    Hah, I have one of these and have enjoyed playing it for a few years. The guy I bought it from got fooled into thinking it was a real one, because someone replaced the truss rod cover and pick guard. It's a great bass either way.

  • @PSF1
    @PSF1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dave, if the truss rods were replaced would that sort the neck out, or is this a situation where the neck is too far gone?

    there is a way to fix it, but it's a pain and probably not worth it. that way would be to make a new neck

    I have old Greco (gneco logo) bass with same pickups. This pickups is in very bad condition and also theyre not really good quality. But they sound really naturally and clean. Bridge pickup winding are so sick, so it get out of isolation. And i replaced it by Semour duncan. But japanese copies are really good anyway.

      ***** yah, John is kind of a twat. XD my dream bass is from a show called FLCL, and it's a left handed Azureglo Ric 4003, (there were like 5 made before John discontinued the color) but unlike the good Sir Paul McCartney (the reason why the character has that bass in the show) I am a righty.
