    I have actually spoken with people who worked on the Texas State Railroad. According to them, the speeds that 610 ran at for the Southern had beaten the engine badly, so there is also that to consider if a restoration ever happens (which it sadly likely won't).

    Frisco's 1519 is currently on display at the Enid Oklahoma railroad museum in non-operational condition just cosmetically restored could be rebuilt or repaired but it's cost prohibitive right now

      Agreed. I’m now in greater favor of restoring a different T-54, given 1522’s state and not to mention the dark truth about the SLSTA that Jim told about them last Christmas.

      @@williammacdonald3173 she is actually the only steam locomotive to never have been retired since 1959, that's why her nickname is The Living Legend. That's why UP wouldn't replace her with UP 3985, because they want to keep her in service as long as they can. The good thing though is that all 3 major UP Steam stars have a good home, and will be operable at the same time in the future.

    The Ace project was neat, it had Livio Dante Porta and David Wardale involved.
    They were going to continue the project but the design kept changing, it went from a somewhat conventional cab forward 4-8-2 to a strange full body cab unit.
    Both Wardale and Porta did keep working on modern steam and have lots of information available.
    I recommend a book called Red Devil and other tales of steam, it's full of data and research from all of Wardale's experiments with steam.
    Also ASTT has an archive of Wardale's 5AT project and bunch of other stuff, there's also CSR a group I consider an offspring of the 5AT project.
    I know of tons of people that do or did modern steam. DLM is my favorite and most successful.

    1 I've gotten to see UP 4466 myself twice as tbt I really hope the CSRM one day decides to restore it back to steam and convert it to oil.
    2. A good friend of mine visited the museum 614 has been at for the last decade and heard that somebody is thinking on buying it, though I'm not sure who and if it's 100% true.
    And 3. I still have my doubts Frisco 1522 will run again.

      Don’t do the locomotives he has plans to review in the future. I’m sure he won’t be pleased. I know from watching his latest Dead on Arrival videos and comments of unsuccessful diesels on other peoples’ videos that he already has plans to do episodes for the ALCO DH-643, Baldwin Centipede, SDP40F, P30CH, PRR bad duplexes and S2, and maybe the Fontaine. I bet he might ever review the Baldwin RP-210 and maybe a few BR diesels.

    For UP 4466 I'm fairly certain the California ban on coal-fired steam locomotives is just a myth, the real reason would have been the updated FRA rules on operating steam locomotives which includes the costly 1472 day inspection. The 4466 was nearing its 15 year date of operation in 1999. At that time they already had the smaller oil-firing Granite Rock No.10 in operation. I'm also certain the logistics of purchasing and shipping the coal was another reason.

      @regularguy7266 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I actually think it's a great thing, because it encourages the owners of these locomotives to take care of said locomotives, that's the way it should be. Plus the locomotives have to be inspected by the FRA anyways.

      Depending on what state a locomotive is in, it could start land fires from the ashes of coal firing locomotives. That's why you see in the west, wildfires are more common because the climate is more dry than the Midwest and East.

    Now here’s the thing, a locomotive can not be considered an “excursion star” if it hasn’t hauled any form of excursion. Hauling two or more passenger cars on a scenic railroad doesn’t count, hence why 4466 has no place on the list.

      Fire doesn't spread well in wetter climates in the Midwest and East, but since Califirnia and other Western states have a more dry climate, their more prone to ash spreading into fire.
