  • Justin Trudeau doesn’t appreciate Trump’s new tariffs on Canada. Ana Kasparian, Mark Thompson, and Brooke Thomas, hosts of The Young Turks, discuss. TYT now has a full audio network! Available where you listen to podcasts. Get more info at TYT.com/audio.
    "OTTAWA (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump’s blistering attack on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has driven bilateral relations to their lowest point in decades and left Ottawa with few options for averting a trade war with its much bigger neighbor.
    Trump blew apart a G7 summit in Canada over the weekend, blasting Trudeau as “very dishonest and weak” and raising the prospect of tariffs against auto imports, a move that would imperil the Canadian economy.
    His unexpected and extraordinary attack flummoxed Canadian officials, who have waged an 18-month campaign designed to cultivate allies among U.S. policymakers and business leaders in defense of Canada’s interests.
    People close to the situation said they were disappointed the outreach had not been as productive as they hoped. The dispute weighed on the Canadian dollar on Monday.”*

    Trump: "Canada sucks, I want a trade war!"
    Trudeau: I respectfully disagree..
    Trump: "How DARE anyone disagree with me! Wahhhh!"

      Trudeau was supposed to say ' We deserve to declared a national security threat, and it is an honor to have tariffs placed upon us by the strong, honorable and virile President of the United States, Donald F. Trump's.
      Only a brainwashed libtard could think differently!

      Obama could not any of the hostages out, such a fine grown up. Trump is acting WITHIN his authority as a president, only the most biased person can compare it with throwing tantrums. You clearly want America to fail, and it angers you that Trump does not.

      When Trump says 'America First', every one of his supporters cheers.
      When Trudeau says 'Canada First', every Trump support calls him a traitor to the USA...
      To be consistent, they should cheers that their ideology is spreading, right?
      Why is it OK for the USA to enact protectionist measures, but not for Canada? I don't see why the double standard.

      How many times does he make a statement that nobody but he thinks is true? How many more of his own people will be throw under the bus before you realize, his act is a continuous game of jenga where he pulls the bottom out from under it before it begins?
      I never imagined a trump lackey would finally admit it, that their supreme leader is unintelligent. The dems do have issues, and out act, wrk we at last communicate with each other before going on tv and making statements. How many times has trump said something on live and international tv and the heads of the armed services go, umm we never planned to do that, we aren't ceasing that...

      Craig X you realize the biggest reason Canada is insulted by the tariffs is because Trump claims they're necessary for "National Security."
      You know. Our closest (both literally and metaphorically) ally. Our 2nd largest trading partner. A country that shares over FIVE THOUSAND MILES of our border which NO ONE has proposed building a wall on. A country whose soldiers have died fighting alongside American soldiers in many, many conflicts abroad.
      Yeah, those guys, real big threat to American national security there.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The hypocrisy of Trump and his mouth-pieces is so thick you'd need a chain-saw to cut through it. Back-stabbing? That's what Trump has done to Canada and to 6 million of his voters who rely on steel and aluminum imports for their jobs. Not to mention every single one of Trump's loyal supporters will now be paying much higher prices for anything made with steel or aluminum when there is absolutely NO REASON for these tariffs. That's back-stabbing for you.

    • @thefelix7767
      @thefelix7767 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then the idiocy of saying it's national security. The tariff is bad enough in itself, on top of it you spit on you ally's face. If they wanted a national security policy all that would be needed is that any DoD contracts have to use US steel, or any other contracts deemed national security. There, done. The industry lives, and all your national security infrastructure uses domestic steel. Canada wouldn't object to that, and you don't punish every industry upstream of a raw resource. Construction, recreational boats, vehicle manufacturing (not just cars), cans, fences, metal furniture, etc. Construction alone is a major deal here. Imagine a new building's core suddenly goes up 25% in price. There's a huge amount of steel used in construction, along with millions of jobs. Increasing the cost of building to the point where things may not be built at all is going to bring in the hurt.

    just a point about Canadian dairy tariffs:
    The US provides subsidies of roughly 75% of total income to dairy farmers. Canadian tariffs are proportionally set as a response to these subsidies. If the USA wants Canada to reduce dairy tariffs, the USA is going to have to reduce subsidies.

    • @Keldrath
      @Keldrath 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kind of, yeah. It's because of those subsidies we are able to produce so much more than we consume, and all that excess without tariffs would flood the Canadian market and utterly destroy their dairy industry, which no country is going to allow really because self sustaining agriculture is a national security issue.

    It should be noted, that the clip you showed of Trudeau is nearly vertabim the statements he made to Meet the Press over a week ago. So why would Trump be upset by it - he'd already heard it. What angered Trump was that after the G7 Trudeau added "We may be a polite people, but we will not be pushed around". And ya never call out a bully (eh?).

    Let me be very clear to all Canadians: There are no Americans in favor of these tariffs. All Americans despise Trump and everything he has ever done in his life (except cancel TPP).

      I wouldn't say that no Americans like it, as a lot of his base in the Bible Belt states are still even now singing their praises of him. In the eyes of many of them, Trump could start a nuclear WW3 which leaves the US decimated and in ruins, and they would still shout their support for him.
      As a Canadian living in central Virginia, I see it every day, with folks still gladly cheering him on.

    • @LSpiro
      @LSpiro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why are you counting them as Americans? These tariffs are un-American, and by definition anyone in favor of them is not American.

    • @thefelix7767
      @thefelix7767 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +L. Spiro actually there are many Americans in favor of his actions, which is sad in itself. Also, you know what I find ironic? The biggest problems with the TPP were put in there by American special interests. The thing about corporations basically outranking countries on legal disputes wasn't put in there because Peru insisted. The worse parts were written by corporations and their lobbyists, and then passed on to the politicians they bought, and everything in secret. A trade deal of that size could've been very beneficial for the US, but it was negotiated in secret and in favor of special interests with no one representing the people.

    • @LSpiro
      @LSpiro 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There aren’t Americans in favor of his actions. Being American means fighting tyranny, protecting others, liberty, justice, etc. Being Donald Trump is un-American-literally against America-and by definition there are no Trump supporters, or even people who support his policies, who are American.
      Those claims are in direct conflict with each other.

    This was posted by a friend of a friend who's an economic development pro ...please read what he says to try and make sense of the crazy rhetoric you are hearing regarding trade.
    "I've been crunching some numbers on Can/US trade to try and make sense of this current dispute with President Trump..
    Despite what Trump says, US Exports to Canada in 2017 were $341 Billion while total Imports were $332 Billion - representing a trade surplus of $8.4 Billion in favour of US (US Commerce Department data).
    US Dairy Exports to Canada totalled $631 Million while Imports from Canada totalled $112 Million - giving the US a 5 to 1 surplus. The total Dairy market in Canada is approximately $6 Billion based on farm gate receipts meaning that US products amount to roughly 1% of total Canadian sales.
    To put this in context, Trump is punishing Canada (and the EU) over a dispute representing 1/10th of 1% of the largest bilateral trading relationship in the globe - in which the US enjoys a modest 1.25% surplus.
    Yes Canada does impose a substantial 270% tariff on diary products to protect our domestic supply management system but note that the US charges a 350% on tobacco to protect their growers.
    Those living on glass houses should not throw stones.

      +JuanJose At least the retaliatory tariffs from the other countries are trying to strategically target Trump voters while sparing everybody else. It's Trump's own tariffs that will hit the majority of consumers. Steel and aluminum have a huge upstream industry use. Just think about that, the retaliators are being careful of affecting the least amount of the general population of the US than Trump is. The US is a huge economy, but even with that you can't just pick up a trade fight with Canada, Mexico, the EU, and China at the same time. It's going to be a blood bath if this keeps going. The only hope is they stick to their strategy of hitting only heavy Republican areas and leave most of the rest as untouched as possible.
      Yes, agricultural and rural America will be absolutely devastated by those countries targeting them together, but someone's gotta pay the price for Trump, and well, Trump strongest voters are the best choice. Note the countries are putting tariffs for maximum effect on the US, and minimal on their own. Consumers there won't be hurt much by a tariff on Levi's, bourbon, and Harleys. Mexico is already shifting orders of some produce to Brazil, and that may not come back. And make no mistake, despite the idea of Mexico seen in the movies with some shacks in the dirt where people ride donkeys, the southern neighbor is a massive export market for the US. It's bigger than China, Japan, and South Korea combined, or the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, Belgium, and Netherlands combined. For farming products it's an even bigger market force as it's a tremendous consumer US farms. Trump is not just entering a temporary trade war that would end after him, it's doing permanent damage. Europeans may not want to buy Harleys even after the sanctions are lifted for example, and there's nothing you can do, as now it's associated with Trump voters. You never know where the steel used in a product comes from, but you damn sure know where the bourbon is made.
      Who takes on their top 4 trade partners at the same time treating them like enemies? Top 5 if he goes along with the G7 threats, as it has Japan in it, which hasn't entered the struggle... yet.

    The way that it works when companies in Canada import diary or when they used to import steel (about 10 years ago when we had tariffs...we are going backwards) they can apply for an import permit. Then they are not paying that 300% in duties. However there is a cap on how much they can bring in. That goes per hs code. If they go over that cap and they want to bring in more then they have to pay the full duty amount.

    For once and for all. Canada has dairy quotas. If you are a Canadian farmer you cannot surpass your quota. There is room in the market for American dairy but again they cannot exceed quotas. Dairy expires quickly, you can't just buy a bunch of product that is going to rot on the shelf. So when the US tries to dump extra product on the market, they get charged large tariffs to discourage Canadian producers not to buy a bunch of cheap product being dumped. This happens with all kinds of agricultural products on both sides of the borders.
