Hello and thanks for tuning in to the newest episode of SUMO PRIME TIME. The tournament in Osaka is often referred to as the “Areru Haru Basho” or “Stormy Spring Tournament” due to its historical tendency to feature numerous twists and turns, often resulting in unexpected upsets. And that’s exactly what happened this time. The rikishi who created the biggest storm this year was Takerufuji, a Maegashira 17 top division rookie. When the dust settled in Osaka, it was Takerufuji who accomplished something no one had been able to achieve in over a century. Enjoy the sensational rookie’s history-making performance from the March Tournament.
His comments during the yusho interview were Yokozuna-rashii. I also liked how he attempted to help his opponents get back up or not fall out of the ring after he defeated them. Real sportsmanship on his part.
Takerufuji is just so strong and stable. His frame is not even that big compared to the other rikishi but he has so much power and excellent timing and footwork! What a standout performance! Itll be exciting to see where he goes from here

Something I haven't seen people mention enough is that Takerufuji actually *outdid* Taiho's record of 11 straight wins as a rookie, since one of Taiho's wins back then was a fusensho!

@@1678felipeI just realize some western TH-cam channel just make sumo into something like WWE without reading the rules. Even they are same stable, they can still fight each other in playoff.
many congratulations from here in Brøndbyøster, Denmark.... I noticed Takerufuji back when he was in Makushita, and am very much pleasantly surprised that he has kept his momentum all the way to this championship... please stay injury free and win another one!
Nice positive video to distract from all the shenanigans of the council of elders and how they are so biased against ex-Hakuho and his stable cause he didn't play the game they think he should have. The hypocrisy is overwhelming and I know you can't say anything Hiro cause the elders pay your salary. Maybe one day when you retire we'll get your thoughts on the injustice.
Interesting that Takerufuji made the comment about not getting injured after his match with Kotonowaka, a little foreshadowing perhaps. Congratulations from Maryland, very much looking forward to to the next basho and Takerufuji's performance!
My brother and I had met Takeru once by chance and talked shortly with him! I swear to god, the guy emitted some insanely intimidating warrior energy, I felt tiny! He is like a real life Baki character...
March was my first time watching a tournament, and i have immediately become a fan. I was very impressed by Takerufuji and also Onosato and hope to see more of their success in tournaments to come!
This was a wild tournament for sure. When Takerufuji was slaying in the first week, I thought he was doing well but in week two he's going to get crushed... He proved me wrong and even equaled Taiho's record against my boy, Kotonowaka. I'm honestly excited with the talent we have emerging and developing in Makuuchi. You've got a consistently solid Hoshoryo, new Ozeki in Kotonowaka and despite Krishima's brutal March showing, you can't count him out looking forward. Wakamotoharu also in pursuit of Ozeki promotion and now Onosato and Takerufuji coming up in the last two tournaments, I'm pumped.
Agreed. There have been plenty of violence scandals in other stables in the past couple years and nothing really happens other than maybe sitting out 1 tournament.. but Hakuhos stable gets completely dissolved? Talk about hypocritical favoritism.
I agree fully i just commented that he's making history while the JSA is trying to erase the best to ever do it from sumo history. Its shameful. Takerufuji has achieved an incredible feat, but it’s a shame it is overshadowing the crime committed against Miyagino stable. Yusho winners come and go, but the destruction of a stable out of spite is a historic tragedy.
This was really fun to see! And I got to see a few highlights from NHK as well... Hiro, is that your voice doing some of their announcing? I think I heard you and one other person I didn't know of.

The JSA are jealous, bitter old has beens who's behavior makes Sumo loose face with other professional sports leagues. Sumo will never be taken seriously if they keep doing stupid and racist things.

I know it has nothing to do with the purpose of the video. But I want to make clear the fact that I am extremely angry with the outcome of the incident with Hokuseiho and how they took hypocritical and excessive measures against former Hakuho. I never plan to watch sumo again in my life. That's how it is and will be, dear JSA elders. I used to idealize Japanese society as a beacon that other countries should aspire to be, but this situation made me realize how racist the Japanese are. Very good video Hiro san, but this dislike is a form of protest against the dissolution of the Miyagino stable.
JSA did wrong to Miyagino! How is it that Coach Kasugano was just promoted after Tochimusachi was caught in a violent scandal? How is Miyagino stable just rolled into Isegahama’s, run by the same Isegahama who had a bullying scandal in 2022!?
NOW, you knooow very well that this will never be reported on by ANYONE associated with Sumo in any way. If it weren’t for Chris Sumo we wouldn’t have even known ANYTHING negative about Sumo Culture and their hypocrisy on/at all levels. Hiro’s only purpose here is to put a happy spin on Sumo nothing more. Everything ELSE is completely off limits.
Love the young talents. However, absolutely disgusted with the JSA!! Been watching Sumo all my life but what JSA doing with the myagino stable and 🐐 of sumo is an absolute disgrace!! JSA is in dire need of a serious reorg asap!!
what would really be history making? the NSK leaving english channels alone and actually help spread sumo outside japan first debutante to win makuuchi 110 years first person to win back to back juryo and makuuchi in 110 years 1 of 3 to win the yuusho and all 3 special prizes 1 of 4 to win from m17
I'm happy for Takerufuji but seems like this means we won't get a Hakuoho vs Takerufuji match. Now that Miyagino has been absorbed. Match making is gonna be hard with the super heya around.
I rooted for Takerufuji ever since his bout with Roga, that's when I first noticed him. And from about day 8 I was already secretly hoping for this victory. This has been an incredible feat by someone with larger than life willpower and dedication. Beside being such a fighter he is also a guy with a golden heart, who respects his elders, loves his team, and can be cute too as proven by a short video of that team doing a show for children. Onosato, Kotonowaka, Hoshoriyu, Takerufuji may you give us many years of great sumo. A for those who want to wallow in the scandal can they please go back to the channel that likes to spread shite and wallow there?
Nhk should provide proper coverage of the basho or let people like Natto do their job! Who likes to watch the highlights 2-3 days later after so many spoilers.
He's making history while the JSA is trying to erase the best to ever do it. I understand having a punishment but this has gone too far in my opinion when others haven't received the same punishment. Heck one if the heya just had the exact same thing reported to them by a wrestler just like hakohu stable. But what happened? They decided to tell the stable master to handle it internally. Just listen to Chris Sumo's last few videos. Now i don't think it's racial like some people. But i do think its personal by some of the members and some if there comments have said as much. Comments like they didn't like that he was able to recruit good future stars at his hakuho cup. That's petty jealousy. The man gave a lot to sumo. I think he's earned some leeway on the punishment. Because it's been over the top.
congratulations to Takerufuji for a great championship !!!! JSA Hypocrisy taints this whole basho. Does the JSA hate all foreigners or just the ones from Mongolia? "Do as I say,not as I do !!" JSA.😡🤢.... It's all pretty sickening to me and sumo fans across the world.🤢🤢 Where does this leave foreign Sumo fans now???? petty, jealous, vindictive, and even racist?many faces of the JSA....Miyagino stables deserves the same chances as any other stable !
If NHK doesn't hire Natto or simply allow him to do his thing, their coverage will continue to be a day late and lesser quality than what he's been doing. JSA continues to disappoint and exclude foreigners in every way possible. Yes Japan is an island nation but on an increasingly tiny planet.
This is so true. I like Natto's videos because he sets the whole seen with the pre match overlay of how they are doing in the tournament, past tournaments and other relevant info. I wish he added the English commentary or they we could get an English translation of the Japanese would be best.
As long as there's mutual consent to start the match the ref will say Hakkeyoi! which roughly means, "okay, go!" it can also mean "fight with spirit", and mid bout when the wrestlers aren't really doing anything it can be used like "hurry up and do something!". If the timing is off he will say "matta" which basically means false start and they need to do the initial charge again.
Congrats to TAKERUFUJI! Great performance! Hopefully he's not just another flash in the pan like so many winners of the past couple years and just disappears back to Juryo or below by the end of the year. The sole Yokozuna will retire just prior to, during, or after the next basho, and there are only two possible contenders that can achieve Yokozuna status. Kotonowaka and Hoshoryu, and I don't have complete faith in either of them being Yokozuna material as of yet, but they are the two with the best possible chance to become Yokozuna at some point compared to anyone else. Also: The JSA can eat a bag of D***S! The JSA needs to be completely revamped or removed with a newer, more modern board of sumo enthusiasts. Not a bunch of bigots who are far out of touch with reality, and who are destroying the very heart and soul of sumo sport.. Sumo needs to be brought into the 21st century ASAP before the sport dies by the hands of the incompetent JSA.
His tachiai is both classic and lethal. He attacks from low and although he pretends to be going for the belt his real aim is your armpits. Once there he then reads your balance very well. I am sure he will be an ozeki soon
Various injuries, it was announced after the Basho. He just felt compelled to push through because this was the last Basho at his old stable before the master retires. It's a real pity, he should have rested and healed if he's going to be kadoban in May anyway. At least he can skip the current tour. I really hope he can bounce back from this.

I like this rikishi - there's something noble about him
JSA did wrong to Miyagino! How is it that Coach Kasugano was just promoted after Tochimusachi was caught in a violent scandal? How is Miyagino stable just rolled into Isegahama’s, run by the same Isegahama who had a bullying scandal in 2022!?
Takerufuji is not big for a sumo wrestler, but he seems very strong. Just check out the muscles on his shoulders, they are so pronounced.
Shame to the JSA for their treatment of Hakuho!
Free Hakuho.
Will be you be doing a video on the witch-hunt of Miyagino, or are you just going to try and bury the story?
NOW, you knooow very well that this will never be reported on by ANYONE associated with Sumo in any way. If it weren’t for Chris Sumo we wouldn’t have even known ANYTHING negative about Sumo Culture and their hypocrisy on/at all levels.
Hiro’s only purpose here is to put a happy spin on Sumo nothing more. Everything ELSE is completely off limits.
Crazy
Love the young talents. However, absolutely disgusted with the JSA!! Been watching Sumo all my life but what JSA doing with the myagino stable and 🐐 of sumo is an absolute disgrace!! JSA is in dire need of a serious reorg asap!!
any chance we can see some stats before each match? It makes it more interesting to watch
what would really be history making? the NSK leaving english channels alone and actually help spread sumo outside japan
first debutante to win makuuchi 110 years
first person to win back to back juryo and makuuchi in 110 years
1 of 3 to win the yuusho and all 3 special prizes
1 of 4 to win from m17
would have enjoyed this tournament a lot more if i could have watched the coverage from _nattosumo_
Same
DITTO !
I'm happy for Takerufuji but seems like this means we won't get a Hakuoho vs Takerufuji match. Now that Miyagino has been absorbed. Match making is gonna be hard with the super heya around.
Sumo Primetime.... Good and fresh
JSA.... Bad, outdated and biased
hey hiro, why is the JSA so racist against hakuho? seems like he and his rikishi are being treated very poorly and unfairly. shame on you.
Takerufuji has a great tachi-ai and a fast charge. He's good on the belt and has a backup oshi attack. If he stays injury free he will be a big star.
Hey Hiro, never mentioning what is going on with Kasugano and Myagino stables..
The win over Kotonowaka was so impressive i was sure he would win the tournament after that
I rooted for Takerufuji ever since his bout with Roga, that's when I first noticed him.
Miyagino forever!!
Nhk should provide proper coverage of the basho or let people like Natto do their job! Who likes to watch the highlights 2-3 days later after so many spoilers.
I like Roga's stable but man, Takerufuji acts like such a stand up guy! Cheers.
That last envelope was thick!
What the JSA is doing to Miyagino is an absolute disgrace! Why don’t you talk about that?
congratulations to Takerufuji for a great championship !!!!
Question, what do the referees say when the fight starts? Thank you very much for your channel and the work you do!❤
As long as there's mutual consent to start the match the ref will say Hakkeyoi! which roughly means, "okay, go!" it can also mean "fight with spirit", and mid bout when the wrestlers aren't really doing anything it can be used like "hurry up and do something!". If the timing is off he will say "matta" which basically means false start and they need to do the initial charge again.
@@mreko1566 Thaaanks!!

He is superstrong in the upper body, and fast.
BRING BACK MIYAGINO'S STABLE!
STOP DEFENDING PEOPLE THAT ALLOW JUNIORS TO BE ABUSED. see a therapist.
What a tournament! Good going for takerufuji 🎉. Would be good to know why Kirishima wasn't performing to his usual self
@@aszechy that's good to know 👍. Lets see how May is for him. Hopefully he'll bounce back into form
