The instrument everyone is asking about is called a "Melody Harp", and yea it is just a really small Kantele. You can bay one for about $40
I would have guessed that instrument would be Russian Gusli, because I've seen one that looks just like your instrument. More traditional kanteles (Finnish kantele / Estonian kannel / Latvian kokle / Lithunian kanklė) look a little different in shape. It's hard to keep track of these instruments because the shapes of their bodies vary a little and they can also be tuned to each other differently, like guitars. But anyways, those are perfect instrument for Folk Music.

Yeah, the really high notes are on the mandolin and melody harp. Also, the song is played with the capo on the 3rd fret. We forgot to bring the capo with us on the trip to film the video, so...

@turskakuikelo well, since the melody harp was in g minor and that's an annoying key on guitar for this we needed the guitar in GCFBbDG and we didn't have a capo so we tuned the fucker UP and minor 3rd haha

We LOVE Wintersun... we listened to Time I on the way to the hospital when our son was born... and now I'll be walking down the aisle to this version of my favorite Wintersun song... though it's super hard to pick a favorite song from them for me...Xanthochroid could not have done a better more beautiful rendition of this song, they kept the integrity and meaning of the original while giving it a different sound, they're voices are so majestically beautiful, and they're instrumental playing just makes you lean back and close your eyes... beyond perfect gentlemen!
A proper cover of my favorite band, congrats Xantochroid, your interpretation even expresses some more sorrow than Jari's at some moments (especially @ 1:36 - 1:55)

I am an American and I grew up in the 1970s'. I do not think that I can listen to American bands again after this. You people are so much more... amazing, musically. I grew up on early metal (back then it was Black Sabbath, Deep Purple ). OK, Five Finger Death Punch is OK but.... they are nowhere in your league. I understand that you are not playing metal but, you are.
+Dale Subic It's the spirit of people, ancestors and lands enchanting this song.... The original is pretty epic and powerful (the entire Time album of Wintersun is epic and symphonic). But thhis rendition is still carrying the level of feeling higher. It's so mezmerising. I am part Nordic, hearing such song is so chilling and touching. It makes me cry, laugh, feel humble and great at the same time.....

To get to know partly what our ancestors must have felt :) Which is personally why Heidevolk is my favorite along with others (obviously). An epic cover, with this amazing accoustic sound, capturing all the solenity, like I'm feeling the pure whiteness of snow. And surprisingly enough, a very good use of accordion, probably the instrument I hate the most but not here.
This should be used in Game of Thrones or Westworld.

This song was written by wintersun originally. Wintersun doesn't describe themselves as folk metal, but a lot of fans see them that way (and the main song writer played in one of the most epic folk metal bands, Ensiferum(check out the song eternal wait!)). Wintersun is a Finnish band and lots of the melodies and harmonies reflect that. Check out the original version of "land of snow and sorrow" to see what i mean. Welcome to metal, my friend.
