I love to hear the banjo ring! But this is genius, especially for a beginner, makes practicing so much easier when your learning! Also gives you more variety with your sound, love this! Thanks!
Well, "the drone" certainly SHOULDN'T dominate the sound. It's a bit like when you hear a TH-cam recording of a group of singers and the harmony is so loud that the melody is swamped. That shouldn't happen. Back to the banjo. It is very important that banjo players record themselves and then REALLY listen to the playback as to the overall balance of the sound being produced. That's very important.
Should??? since when is ANYONE, including you, or me, the arbiter of how a banjo 'SHOULD' sound?! have you not noticed how many different 'sounds' the banjo is capable of, and playing styles, that can appeal to so many? And disparaging remarks, such as you have made, of someone who takes the time to upload a video he or she thinks will be helpful and interesting - is, well, just plain uncool .
OK, so, damp it all down so it sounds like anything OTHER than a banjo; makes sense... OH, COME ON! I admire Richie's playing but a banjo is supposed to RING (at least a LITTLE). The interviewer's silly comments about the fifth string being annoying are just plain stupid. It's a FIVE-string banjo. If you don't like a "drone", play a tenor or a plectrum banjo!
Her comments aren't silly. Sometimes it is annoying. It's like me thinking Scruggs may have brought a lot of attention to the banjo, but he has probably put more people off it than anyone else. To me that style is an assault to the senses and not that pleasant to listen too, however I listen to old times and clawhammer constantly. It's not a silly view. It's just my experience of it.

I feel the same. I have worked on the triplet stuff. Improving our playing is a life long endeavor for sure....Bill
thanks for posting. I love it all
The damped string at 3.40 sound is lovely. Seriously, could you ever say a banjo could be used as a lullaby. This does it for me

This woman is the world's worst interviewer, and she whines about things she does not like.
She squandered a wonderful opportunity.
