    • @jeanbot
      @jeanbot หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I can’t recommend Ren enough! Every song is a jewel. Chalk Outlines is so beautiful. Also recommend Tale of Jenny, Screech and
Violet. Also: Money Game I-iii. They’re all great. React to all of them, he’s so so so gifted.

    • @cathrinewitty6749
      @cathrinewitty6749 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Definitely more, I’ve subscribed in anticipation 😬. Videos I recommend are,
      Chalk outlines.
      Sick boi.
The tale of Jenny and screech - including violets tale.
The money game trilogy - make sure money game 2 is the lyric video.
      Su*cide - it’s a tough watch tho’.
      How to be me.
There are so many, for a lighter side of Ren I suggest
The Big Push - I shot the sheriff/road to Zion.
      The hunger.
      Murderer.
      Back on 74’
      Nas retake, halftime.

Also wanted to point out if you are unaware many of Ren’s videos are done live and in one take. It’s so impressive and you’ll see exactly how impressive when you do money game 3.

I first heard this song last March, I had been drinking every single day for the past 10 years, blacking out practically every night. My health was failing, throwing up blood every day for months at this point, and this song is the only reason I sought help. A few months later I went to rehab and I'm 9 months sober now. He is insanely talented, poetic, and able to communicate emotion and very real human struggles with impact. He restored my faith in myself, and my love of art and creating and writing. He restored my will and ambition.

He lost a friend early on to suicide. He has another song about that experience that I guarantee will tear you up - in a good way. It is called Suicide. He lays it all out, holds nothing back. It is a beautiful piece of work, compelling, cathartic, unforgettable.
Because of that loss, he has held on through a horrendous experience of misdiagnosis of his own illness as being psychological, which he addresses pretty well in Sick Boi. He's been through hell and back, and it shows in his depth, purpose, and beauty. He has been tempered by life.
    He is an incredible talent.

I'm impressed at how much you picked up on your first watch. Ren has been through a lot in his young life's, from having lost his best friend to an unaliving incident to spending around 10 years (basically all of his 20s) suffering excruciating pain, episodes of psychosis and extreme fatigue but being told it was all in his head only to be diagnosed in his 30s that he in fact had Lyme's Disease all along. He went through some extremely dark phases but his love for music pulled him through. A gifted, but self taught musician (via TH-cam by slowing down Jimmy Hendrix for example), Ren is a multi instrumentalist, he composes, produces and writes everything. Makes his own bears to most of his songs (some he samples) and creates his videos himself with the help of some very talented and dedicated friends. As an independent artist most his videos are done on a shoestring budget with most not exceeding £2000. The only exception being Mobey Game 3, a masterpiece which cost around £20,000. Originally starting out as a busker, Ren prides himself in playing live for many of his tracks as well as using 'one takes'. This video as you rightly noticed, was live, but it was also a one take (after only 4 tries). I think you will really appreciate this incredible artist and thoroughly recommend you continue to react to him. Us 'Ren-egades' as we've called ourselves 😅 only ask that as a reactor you please pause if you want to say anything and then rewind a few seconds before starting up again. This is bc unlike other artists, Ren's videos are very richly packed with details that can be easily missed. A prime example is The Tales of Jenny and Screech (and Violet); an incredible trilogy of tales which requires full attention in order to understand the ending. Here is a link to help you fund the right version:

Ren is truly in a league of his own. His lyricism is always mind blowing and his creativity is insane. He can do literally anything. His back story is absolutely worth looking up as he suffered for years with misdiagnosis for Lyme Disease. He gives a voice to people who suffer especially those with chronic illness and mental health issues. I hear so much of my story (with chronic illness) in his and its so refreshing to listen to someone who sees people like me because we're usually pretty invisible. I hope you do more Ren. Everything he does is absolute fire. You should check out Chalk Outlines (live) next. Then you can go down the Chinchilla rabbit hole too. 🤪

That line is so very impactful for me. I know that voice, I've heard it before. I think many of us have in one form or another. What I love most about the community that has risen up around Ren, is there is an empathy there, empathy for our fellow human beings, which is sadly lacking in the world we live in. Ren brings that out, in the "RENagade" community. That also gives me hope, and makes me feel less alone.

I'm an amateur musician, and at times have felt like a pretend in my paying career over the years. I have depression, anxiety and PTSD and lost 2020 to them completely. I'm very fortunate in that I've never experienced suicidal ideation but I think the incredible nature of what Ren did here is he managed to take his personal experiences and make them speak to anyone who has had any kind of internal struggle. Be that self-doubt which I think many or most of us have at one time or other, through to those darker things that go on inside us.
This song speaks to me in so many ways it's uncanny. Whether a person likes how he puts things together musically and visually or not, he's a flat out lyrical genius to my mind. (Oh and I love the way he does things... he feels like a precious thing to me actually).

  • @yonahgrossman7319

Great reaction! Lost count long ago of the times Ren is so transported while playing the guitar that he totally loses control over his facial muscles. You think THAT was funny guitar face? Just wait!!
(You were right about the unaliving aspect. The song was planned to end with the sound of a gunshot just after the 'devil' Ren crescendo, but when he showed it to a close friend, they said, "Ren, all your songs are so depressing. Couldn't this one end a little happier, after which Ren went to the beach and in one go wrote 'hope' Ren's response and the spoken outro. Good catch - and just for the record, LOTS of Ren's songs are happy/silly/funny as well. Ren does EVERYTHING.)

I was interested in what you said about him looking down to reach the high note because in one of his other songs he does with a female artist they sing in harmony but for the highest note she looks up and he puts his head down. It's always puzzled me.
Ren is very precious. Thank you for sharing his music ❤

Subbing for more Ren! You don’t know what magic you have stumbled on! 🖤
    🔥🔥🔥
.Welcome to the Renaissance! Ren is my favourite artist of all time. I say artist because he is a multifaceted diamond! From singing (all styles) to rapping (bars/flows/schemes for days), Bardcore (story telling) beatbox, makes his own beats, scatting and a multi instrumentalist (guitars, bass, drums, melodica and more). On top of that he is the most beautiful human being inside and out who has been through and continues to go through absolute hell.
Ren is 33 from Anglesey, Wales originally but spent most his adult life in Brighton, England. He has been very ill for years, at one point being completely bed ridden. He was misdiagnosed for years, being told he was bipolar, had M.E and more and was prescribed medications that made him worse and ended up in psychosis. It turns out Ren had Lyme disease which has caused havoc on his body. He’s been living in Calgary, Canada all year receiving intense medical treatment for his brain damage and mast cell activation disorder amongst other things that were caused by the Lyme disease.
He started off making beats at 12 and selling CDs then moved on to busking. He was part of a band called Trick The Fox and was signed to Sony but they didn’t renew the contract after his health deteriorated. He then started The Big Push. They went on hiatus the end of last year after 5 years partly due to his move to Canada and also because the other members are also soloists and were moving around too.
I have a list of songs to check out of all styles. Obviously this is no where near everything but gives you places to start. 🖤

    - teenager writes a little ditty
    - inner critic shows up
    - teen tries to crush the inner critic
    - inner critic turns into an inner demon, and crushes the teen
    - young man learns the secret to managing the inner critic and inner demon
    - young man performs the little ditty he wrote as a teen. But now it is confident, complex, layered, a little bit dark, and gritty. Less innocent but somehow better.
    - wise man shares his experience with others.
Audience relizes that that kid performing at the beginning of the video was actually a very mature man just pretending to be his younger self to tell a story and that in itself seems even more masterful.

Big love. I'm in a non verbal stage due to burnout (recovering well though struggling with language). Want to say something about counter-counter movements, signifiers/language/ fashion/ values being subsumed by status quo and used to either misrepresent or infiltrate and derail movements. Hip Hop is a good way to track what's really going on at foundation's of society, what is damaging, how a huge amount of people in general are feeling. Fears, hatreds, dangers, friends rivalries, systems, signifiers. It's an evolving front to stay ahead of any push back against a movement.
I had not even realised I had hip hop artists in my top 10 all time favourites. All independent ones and it's surreal how I accepted a narrative without even realising. I guess keeping a population divided is easier than politics. If you can convince an alternative music lover that she doesn't like hip hop or rap, and she has been into The Streets since his 90s cassette circulation, then we need Hip Hop to reconnect and actually drive change. Ren seamlessly invites us to explore division through genre, and breaking the rules, and welcoming us to explore, leading us in one by one. I've used his music for local movement to protect forest, national movement on other side of Australia to prevent developments on remnant forest unless already cleared suburban land is developed. I've joined international collectives, I've opened up to learning new things and examine my beliefs and challenge expectations.
It's made my world both bigger, and more connected, but still IRL drive rather than nebulous internet signifying.
That makes him mind blowing to me. He built what he needed because he hoped we might need it. And he listens and engages. And he works to lift all up who need it. The pen is mightier than the sword, and the bard has more power than any king.

Such a hard core reaction! This is the song that introduced me to Ren. A bawled my eyes out. He kicked me in the gut. After listening to much of his other stuff, I'm convinced that's he's a genius. His depth of knowledge of all things, which is used in his music is unending. The struggles he's survived and is still living would ruin so many people. He's a giant in my opinion! I subscribed for more. When you mentioned "acceptance" I instantly thought of page 449... In America, it's a 12 step program. 1 step is to admit you have a problem. 2nd step is I need a higher power other than myself. But the 10 step is the program you need to follow.
So step 1&2 is admittance of the problem.

There is one major criteria by which I judge a reactor, and you absolutely GOT IT. As someone who struggles a lot with mental health, this song hits me hard and I cry every time I hear it.
I always interpreted that ending sequence, after he tries to suppress the cynical, negative side of him completely that it just bursts out of him, the pressure coming to a head. After it gets its say and takes over briefly, it leaves room enough for that lighter, more fragile but positive side of him to come through and say its own piece, allowing him to start healing and learning to accept both sides, which seems to come through in the end when he's singing prettily, but sounding frayed and with the lights flickering behind him like they did when that negative side was talking. He learns to, as he says, dance, and it gets easier to move forward, to accept that it's not always going to be nice times, happy times, peaceful. You're gonna have bad days that come with the good, and it's not your fault, it's just how things go sometimes and it's natural.
    Anyway, loved your reaction

When I look at this live performance, I see it as the intro and start of creativity up thru the yodel. It is then interrupted by doubt, and the proverbial curtains part, and we witness the internal conversation between the 2 sides. it culminates in doubt declaring it's existence is in everyone and is everywhere and an individual is helpless to prevent that. Then hope steps up and helps return Ren to be distant and still, and states his ever persistence and presence as well. "We are coin of two different sides." The creativity is then allowed to continue (back to the yodels). This time, however, both sides are present, as indicated by the set lights flashing (they were not in the first yodel). The poem at the end is part of the performance in every version I've heard of it.
What I get most from that poem is the first line: "When I was 17 years old, I shouted out into an empty room, into a blank canvas, that I would defeat the forces of evil." I feel this shows how we do not start with the life experiences to understand the implications of creating balance within ourselves. We have naive expectations of black and white, good and bad, positive and negative. Meanwhile, we miss the importance of recognizing grayness. "We must not forget, that we are human beings."
My final thoughts are that navigating through life is a balancing act of that coin of 2 different sides. The expectation of either extreme (such as total salvation or absolute corruption) are deceptive, in that there will be internal struggles in everyone's lives at some point in time. Growth, development, and teachings are tools to give the individual to create that balance, allowing movement forward, rather than any other direction.

Seeing you speak so honestly on things regarding mental health is very helpful…because I subscribe to the belief that addiction/substance abuse is more of a symptom of the core problem rather than the actual problem itself. So, idk. You being so open is helpful for me. Thanks again.
