Thanks for this incredibly clear, concise, non-vague video about the B gap. I was tired of people waving around the B gap tool without conveying anything concrete and measurable ..... great video

Thanks, glad you liked it and learn something! I keep the tool in my pack while I ride just because it's so lightweight and handy.

the reason the video is clear is since Mr biketothe top is an engineer

Very useful for someone un(willing)able to spend money on a b gap tool, cheers

Thanks! Your comment is confusing about why you can't / won't use this tool. How will you adjust the gap? If you don't use this inexpensive tool, you can adjust by eye (not precise, especially if ones close vision is poor), make your own tool (any object having the specified gap thickness to fill the gap), or eyeball beside a caliper or scale (hard to place in immediate proximity). Initially, I used a caliper, but now I just leave the lightweight gage in my backpack.

biketothetop hi I looked online for around 20 mins for some dimensions of the tool and you were the only place I could find it, so thank you. I had ordered a second hand (new condition) groupset that didn’t have the tool included and couldn’t be bothered waiting for it to arrive and also £6 spend unnecessarily. I simply used a steel ruler and measured 14mm from the tooth of my cassette to the jockey wheels. Haven’t had a single problem since!

Thank you so much. I'm having exactly the same problem you pointed out.

Thanks a lot for the very useful info! You only need a rooler to measure 14-15 mm. Why making aditional tool for this? Useless like power link removal tool.

I benefit from the tool because 1. My eyes are bad. 2. I don't carry a ruler on the trail and I've used this on the trail a few times (during rough rocky rides), but the gage is weightless, small, cheap, and accurate.

on my NX 11v the screw slipped off the tip and bent. Now eveything is stuck and I can't unscew it. Any suggestion?

    • @biketothetop

If I understand correctly, the B-Gap screw is bent so you can't extract it turning counterclockwise? If so, perhaps you can tighten it all the way in clockwise against the screw head and cut off the protruding bent portion on the other side of the derailleur body by using a cut-off wheel/grinder on a Dremel tool, then unscrew it out of the derailleur body?

@@biketothetop yes you got it! I can screw/unscrew just 1/4 turn because it's stuck towards the tip's side. I'll try to cut it from the thread side, unscrew and find a more solid screw. I hope the screw hole it's not damaged. The point is: did this happen because of a bad installation or because a poor derailleur design? If the second case this means that it may happen again in the future.. Is the screw a standard M5 screw?

I consider this a bad design because it is not damage tolerant. One of the reasons I believe these screws come out of adjustment is because they hardstop against a curved surface on the derailleur body. You will see there is a witness mark on the derailleur body from this contact. As the derailleur swings back and forth repeatedly, it wears a hole into the derailleur body that causes the derailleur position to change and thereby require frequent adjustment. Because the screw tip's contact surface is curved it allows a component of force to act perpendicular to the screw axis and that is likely why it was bent during a collision with greater than normal force. I don't know the screw size without checking. If the internal threads are damaged, it may be possible to place a jam nut on the screw and and torque it against the derailleur body to prevent it from moving. I don't know if there is enough space to do this, but I often think of doing this just to reduce the frequency of adjustment because the screw also seems to walk. So in reality there are two reasons why the derailleur B Gap comes out of adjustment: 1. Screw tip wears into derailleur body. 2. Screw loosens.

Not only this problem, but the motor will breakdown with in three months. Levo suck

Yeah, I'd be pretty pissed if I had to deal with the motor problem, but luckily I've got over 2,700 miles on mine and no issues. Believe me if I was dissatisfied with my levo I'd be the first one making noise about it. I suppose I'm lucky. I've seen some information floating around that people say there may be a fix that came out for the motors that have belt failures. What was your experience with levo or are you just ragging on them because you have some axe to grind?

@@biketothetop I also use both, but my XT is doing better than my GX.
Ball-bearings in the GX pulleys are crap, and the B-bolt from the GX is crap (installed new bearings and the B-bolt from the X01).
When you buy Shimano you don’t get different quality between SLX and XTR, just different wight. SRAM is doing bad quality even in GX derailleur…
