June is bustin out all over - Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel 1956

  • The original production of Carousel was directed by Rouben Mamoulian and opened at Broadway's Majestic Theatre on April 19, 1945, running for 890 performances and closing on May 24, 1947. The cast included John Raitt, Jan Clayton, Jean Darling, Christine Johnson and Bambi Linn. From this show came the hit musical numbers "The Carousel Waltz" (an instrumental), "If I Loved You", "June Is Bustin' Out All Over", and "You'll Never Walk Alone".
Carousel was also revolutionary for its time - adapted from Ferenc Molnár's play Liliom, it was one of the first musicals to contain a tragic plot;[citation needed] it also contained an extended ballet that was crucial to the plot, and several extended musical scenes containing both sung and spoken material, as well as dance. The 1956 film version of Carousel, made in CinemaScope 55, again starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, the same leads as the film version of Oklahoma!
Carousel is also unique among the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals for not having an overture; both the stage and film versions began with the familiar Carousel Waltz. This music was included in John Mauceri's Philips Records CD of the complete overtures of Rodgers and Hammerstein with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. It was also included in Rodgers' rare 1954 album for Columbia Records with the composer conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

My Grandmother would take me all over to see Rodgers and Hammerstein plays when I was a child. She would have every Broadway show blasting on her giant stereo every day also.I would dress up and sing and dance and she would clap and we had such a wonderful time always. I know the lyrics of the shows like the back of my hand to this day. She didn't have much when she died but she left me a wonderful gift one could never buy. The gift of music and orchestra ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I miss her dearly but the memories are here to stay.

The choreography and the level of skill required is out of this world - those dancers are just incredible - you would be hard pushed to compare it to anything these days - so much strength agility and poise - must have taken forever to shoot. When those guys jump up onto the railing after already having done all those gymnastics on the rooftop is nothing short of olympian gymnastic techniques. Kudos to their ability and the choreographer its quite breathtaking.

The lady with the operatic voice is Broadway star Claramae Turner. Also, Barbara Ruick, who plays Carrie Pipperidge and has some major bits in this song ("The sheep aren't sleeping anymore.") met and married a pianist in the 20th Century-Fox orchestra named Johnny Williams. Two decades later, Johnny became John and the musical themes for Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader were written.

@@williamsnyder5616 Claramae Turner also did opera apparently. She sings “June” brilliantly in the film of “Carousel”, as well as “You’ll Never Walk Alone” of course, but interestingly one of her verses in “This Was a Real Nice Clambake” wasn’t used in the film, but is the only verse on the Command vinyl LP recording, in which she also sang Nettie. Also, the character’s name in the stage show is Nettie Fowler but for some reason it was changed to Nettie Jordan for the film, which is still plausible as she is Julie’s cousin. The role of Nettie is quite often done by an opera singer but in a recent revival Shirley Jones actually performed it!

A Frank Sinatra sing of the Carousel soundtrack (if any be) be wonderful as a cover alternative to the great Gordon MacRae's, but GM was ethnically and tall burly body build wise a best casting of Billy Bigelow.

Another theory is that Ava Gardner wanted her spouse Sinatra to be around while she was involved in her own film projects. It’s true he could have left due to the initial idea of two takes per scene, but ironically Fox dropped the dual filming concept… even though it was filmed in that 55mm widescreen process, they found a way to reduce the image to 35mm for theaters not equipped for 55mm. MacRae had already performed the role at Dallas State Fair and having been with Shirley Jones in “Oklahoma!” he was a logical choice and did an outstanding job. Phoebe and Henry Ephron, the screenwriters, urged Jones reportedly to phone MacRae. A few years later Sinatra was able to successfully do the swaggering lead character in “Pal Joey” which Gene Kelly had originated on stage.

In this bright and beautiful number, nature bursts into life upon the glorious New England seashore, and we soon learn our heroine Julie Jordan is pregnant (June is Bustin’ Out All Over…), which transforms her tempestuous relationship with Billy Bigelow. The musical shortly takes a dark and fateful turn, with this perhaps its last true glimmer of light for a while. The song is perfect.

score-wise, nothing better. but too candied by half. Sound of Music infinitely better. King and I, too. also South Pacific. ever hear of them? if not, take the time to watch

The film version arranged by Edward Powell in my opinion is still the best version, as conducted by Alfred Newman…but John Wilson also conducted a beautifully done replication of it with a few added embellishments and there are uploaded posts of it on You Tube, even showing the full orchestra performing it with passion. 🎠🎪

It actually opens the song in the original, but in the film version it works equally well to have it as a mid section, as you said. 🎠🎪

it is interesting to note that Agnes De Mille choreographed the original Broadway production, they only used the Louise's ballet derived from the original by (as Agnes De Mille) and the rest was by Rod Alexander (who I never heard of). It looks so Michael Kidd in style.

He was most likely inspired by Michael Kidd, who choreographed “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” which involved some athletic tricks in the dances including the “barn raising”.

Rod Alexander also married Bambi Linn, who in 1943 had appeared in the dream ballet of “Oklahoma!” in both the show and on film, and she was Louise in the original 1945 stage production of “Carousel” (Susan Luckey later was in the film version in 1956).

Fabulous dance number -- except why were most of Nettie's gals in that persimmon-colored outfit? I guess it was a required uniform?? We tried to visit that location in Bar Harbor, Maine, in 1988. But this barge setting had long disintegrated, and so it was just demolished.
