    Over the years I’ve come to terms with the fact that Sailing the world involves a very natural Ebb and flow between actually sailing and working on the boat. The ability to go on these adventures is a hard won feat, one that takes days and weeks, months, or even years of preparation.
    Now Atticus II is in great shape. But all boats are constantly in need of some kind of maintenance or repair. UV from the sun, salt water, fresh water, metal corrosion, wood rot, humidity, Long periods of immobility mixed with momentarily gigantic forces all conspire to turn any actively cruising Sailboat into a loose cluster of breaking down systems.
    I’ve often used the analogy that a cruising sailboat is a bomb with a lit fuse, every now and then we need to splice on a bit more fuse to keep the whole thing from blowing.
    But this time around we’re going to have Isabella with us, so in addition to boat maintenance I’m going to be working on some improvements that will help me singlehanded the boat with minimal help from Desiree.
    So now it’s time to stow our snorkel gear and hiking shoes, and to bust out the tools, so we can keep this bomb from exploding just a little bit longer.

    A good tip for the next time you run into the hole saw problem. Use 2 hole saws on one arbor. One the size of the existing hole as a pilot to center the hole and one the size you want to make the hole.

    • @CarlDamm
      @CarlDamm ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Starret and bosch both make arbors specially to hole two hole saws at once. Starrett calls it an "oops arbor". We use them all the time.

    • @allens7476
      @allens7476 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's so simple, no one ever thinks of it! You beat me to it. Put the new hole saw on first, and then the existing hole. That way the center can fit in the hole before the new saw makes contact. Maybe hole saws get shorter as they get wider so that solution works every time. The inner one is always longer???

    • @barrellcooper6490
      @barrellcooper6490 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Another option. With a piece of thin plywood, use the paper template for the new hole and drill the plywood for the new size hole. Also drill the small holes for mounting screws into the plywood. Then use the plywood as a drill fixture by attaching it to the bulkhead with the mounting screws. Now use the new size hole saw, and the plywood acts as a fixture to line up the saw in the correct place to cut the hole.

    You perfectly nailed the cruising lifestyle, head down and butt up doing boat maintenance in exotic places around the world. And it’s corollary that there’s no such thing as a simple project. Great job - both installing the battery charger, and documenting the trials and tribulations of the project.

    Hi guys
    I’m an electrician and as much I love watching electrical work being carried out on you boat and I really do lov your channel and videos, the best part of this episode for me was seeing your beautiful baby, she is gorgeous ❤️
    Lee going Jordan great job with the electrical install👍👍

  • @johnmayer3433
    @johnmayer3433 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You may have noticed that the blue Euro plug got three pins as well as the charger input. You got a Live wire (230V@50Hz), a Neutral wire (return path) and a Protective earth wire (safety ground). The latter one is necessary for the function of a Residual Current operated Circuit-Breaker that you did not install and which is protecting you from an electric shock caused when some of the current travels through a person's body due to an electrical fault such as a short circuit, insulation failure, or equipment that is not working right.
    Your two wire system works electrically O.K., your battery will get charged, but you need to install that Residual Current Device (RCD).

    Great to see mom, dad and baby!
    I wouldn’t presume to know what Nigel Calder would have to say on your improvised 220/50hz panel separation from the 110/60hz but it was a good step to increase the distance between the hot busses. Some sort of non-conductive isolator is probably an improvement to minimize the risk of an arc between the 2 flavors of AC. The most correct answer is to have separate panels but it’s a boat and we all get the constraints.
    Glad to see y’all back.

    You have such a great attitude and personality for high risk/high payoff tasks and I am inspired by you. Not only as a handyman and sailor, but as a husband and father. I know managing priorities on dry land and at sea are different, but you have a consistent presence of mind that is thoughtful of your wife and child... which is only grown in the last few episodes. You are a gracious human, a good man, and a skilled provider for your family. You are a fortunate man, as well, as you are living the life of unknown adventure/calamity, and doing so with courage and wisdom. Desiree is an amazing complement to you and your skills; truly, you make each other complete. I pray for your health and wisdom as you navigate the uncharted waters of parenthood in the smallest apartment on the deep blue sea.

    Jordan, another way to cut a larger hole without a centering bit is to drill the correct size of hole in some scrap wood... then use hot glue to glue the scrap on the outside and center it over the old hole. Place the larger hole saw in the scrap hole and cut it out. Then use a hammer to tap the scrap block off the fiberglass.

    Hey Jordan. Next time you need to enlarge an existing hole.....take two hole saws and stack them together. Remove the drill bit from the center and put some washers between the two to offset the teeth. Put the existing size in the hole as the stabilizer and the larger saw will cut the new hole.
    Good luck!

    As to the shower repairs, always a temporary fix until such time when there's a better place and time. From a master mechanic who has faced many a condition without all the proper equipment, supplies and time to do a job, for us fellers, you included young man, my favorite saying is......"always something". You did a great job with what you had available. Just making it work is how one builds character, experience and wisdom. Anouther great video in your new world as parents. I have recently been transferring old VHS tapes of pre kids and when they where young. Looking at them now I wish I had focused more on them with the future in mind. Little camcorders where so new and we where not used to video yet. Take as much as you can thinking about her when she is older than you today. I can’t express enough how much better video is than pictures. Especially any possible grandchildren seeing the video. I saw video of my mother next to me and we where just joking around. She was younger than I am today but died in 2005. I started to cry! I am so happy I could introduce her to my children as I remember her. Ya, I know, hard to wrap your head around that one.

    It's actually quite easy to make the hole bigger.
    Put the new larger hole saw on the drill 1st then 'double up' and thread on a saw the size of to original hole.
    The original size saw will end up sticking out a bit further than the new larger size and will centre the saw on the hole. Hope the makes sense for another time.

You might want to consider stripping and varnishing the wood trim in and around your head. If not, the wood will need replacing and that will be tricky. Pull out all caulking and replace after last coat of varnish. By the way love a lot of your tools. Also we hate butyl.

    Well done. Those plastic water lines are susceptible to developing pin holes. My boat is 20 years old with no pin holes but new lines I’ve put in ….. pin hole leaks. There is something wrong with the new plastic. Make sure that when you have the electrical cabinet open next time that you clearly tag the 230 volt lines so you don’t in advertently cross connect. It is so easy to do and especially in 2 years time when you forget.

    Jordan, that breaker you installed should be tied together so that a trip would disconnect both phases of the 220. A breaker meant for that will have the two switches tied together. I believe you can buy breaker ties that go between the two switches, but in a pinch, a small piece of wire through the two breakers should do the trick.

    At least higher voltage will work with the same or smaller wire than 110. Back in '93 I was building my own and home computers for others. Back then software was limited in abilities, and the mother boards had very small dip switches, so I got my 6 year old son with his small fingers to put the jumpers where I told him, that let to playing learning games on the computer, to him building his own and creating his own games. Today he is a graduate degreed programmer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Never underestimate your kid if you can get them involved in projects... You could have the next generation super yacht designer in your cradle...

    While in Central Europe the mains voltage is 230V, in Malta it seems to be even 240V. We used to have 220V in CE, but that was around 30 years ago.

    I don't know how many picked it up BUT you do such a great job of wiring!. everything bundled and neat rather than just there. I'm very jealous. So much easier to find and trace things.

    Nice boat , good idea is to use inserts on all hot and cold pipework. Speed fit is good and easy to fix ,but inserts are cheap and you won't get leaks

    Will be purchasing a sailboat in about a year to live on with my husband and 2 kids. Could you please share a list of the necessary tools and things like butyl tape that are must haves on a boat? Also some tools you started your adventure with that maybe know you realize you just don’t need or use that often. This information would be VERY helpful for people like us who are still on land that are working to transition to boat life so we know what tools to start accumulating for our adventures. THANK YOU! I love watching your projects, adventures, and beautiful family.

    Jordan!! I completely and TOTALLY relate to trying to resolve one issue only to be “surprised” with other issues that suddenly appear that have to be dealt with first - LOL! The reality of boat life 😁 You took it like a champ and love Desiree and Isa’s cameos while your brain was loosing traction on what you were trying to explain. Way to go all of you!! Cheers from Vancouver Island 🇨🇦
    Fun fact: SV Aribel spent 7 years in the Med with the previous owners! ⛵️

    Another way to enlarge the hole is to drill the larger hole in to the plywood scrap first … then center it over the old hole from the top side and secure it in place. ( possibly with sheet metal screws into the flange mount holes) Then use the plywood hole to keep the hole saw centered as you drill through the fiberglass . All from the top side …

      I probably would fab a cardboard template of the large hole and overlay the small hole and dremel grind to match

    Dock a tote for the baby! It’s like a big pillow thing with sides and y’all can probably lay on it too. May be good with a moving boat.

    Jordan, a simpler electrical AC solution would be a 2:1 step-down transformer plus a crossover switch. 🤔 Most 60 Hz power loads will still run on 50 Hz provided the voltage is matched. Sharkbitten hat does electrical for a living... - Blessings, S/V Windwalker
