  • You'd love to host a gaming server or website at your house but what hardware do you need to use? In this video, I will give you some tips you need to know to pick the right hardware to host a server at home. And then I will give you some pointers on where to find that hardware for a good deal. You may not even need a "server" at all! I used to run half a dozen websites on a single Raspberry Pi a few years ago. #homehosting #homeserver #serverhosting

    I considered getting a rack-mounted server for home use, mainly for continued learning & testing for my job. Technology's always evolving. What changed my mind was power usage (high wattage), fan noise, and cooling. Especially, if planning to run it 24x7. My home office is already 3 - 4 degrees F warmer than the rest of the house just using a desktop, laptop, stereo, and TV. My home power bill would likely go up $30+ a month just running the server (assuming running 24x7). More if I need to factor in extra cooling (ie. Air-conditioning) to keep the room temperature reasonable.
    I have a Synology NAS and love it. Had it about 3 years now. A little bit of an up-front cost, though. I suppose it could be an option for light workloads (lower power usage, not noisy, and cooling concerns are negligible). I've tinkered with the Virtual Machine Manager, but never tried running a web server on it though.

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, running a big boy server is a big deal. Like you said, it creates heat, it is noisy, and it consumes several hundred Watts around the clock. Like I mentioned in the video, my favorite choice for running websites and low volume mail servers is a simple 1U chassis with an embedded Atom or Celeron processor, a good amount of RAM, and a few laptop hard drives. These are sites that don't run databases or heavy scripts. And mail volume is < 1000 per day. I've been doing this for 15 years and it runs perfect. The J1900 and J4105M options, for example, consume about 10-12W of power, are fanless, and still have respectable processing.
      As for the NAS, the one I specified in the video is capable of running a full Windows 2019 Server vm plus Active Directory (via the Synology app), DNS server (via the Synology app), and a Veeam backup server. I deploy these to small businesses under 25 employees and they work great. Specs are very similar to the HP MicroServer Gen10. Hopefully that gives you a sense of scale.

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, you will get SO much more bang for your buck on a surplus or "obsolete" server than you could ever get building something new. And they should still last for many years as they are built with components designed to go much, much longer than regular PC parts.

    So I am contemplating buying a multiple purpose server, but mainly to create labs. I want to host a couple VM's, some that could get resource intensive like EVE-ng especially if I start turning on all the virtual switches/firewalls/PC's inside of it. In addition I would like to use it as a remote back up site for my laptop/phones. I was also thinking of tinkering with building a website. Do you have any idea of what kind of hardware specs and OS I should be looking for?

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would use Linux but I am biased and comfortable with that OS. If you have never used it before that may not be a good option. But keep in mind that Windows licensing is expensive and you only get one or two licenses for VM's with your OS unless you purchase more. You may also want to consider that NAS that I talked about at the end of the video. It can run multiple VM's no problem (for free) and can run all the other things you listed, too. You could bump up to a higher model if you need more CPU power.
      But if you are willing to pay for the Windows and VM licensing, a used server with multiple Xeon processors like I mentioned in the video is your best bet. You can get a server that was top of the line 5 years ago and has the best processors and maxed out RAM for under $400. And it will run almost anything you can possibly host at home without even blinking.

Im new to servers so im not sure how stuff like this works.

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The simplest method which is still fairly secure would be to host the server and provide VPN access to your network to each of the other users. You can then share the server on the local network without making it publicly accessible. You could have the server on a separate subnet from the rest of your home network so remote users don't see any of that.

      I host an entire Ark cluster with all of the maps on a single PC (i7, 32GB RAM) for up to 4 people. So on some real server hardware with dual Xeons and 128GB of RAM you could easily host an entire cluster for 70 people. The bottleneck at that point would be your internet connection. 10-20 would be doable on a 100Mbps up and 100Mbps down connection but for a peak of 70 players I would try to get a gigabit connection.
